Bangladesh: Clerics fight atheist bloggers, demand 13-point Islamic agendaby Editors : May 9, 2013 : 1 Comment
 ______________________________________________________________________  Many Bangladeshi youths are struggling against Islam. Initially, they gathered in Shahbag square in Dhaka demanding justice for the war criminals. During the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh, many pious Muslims collaborated with the Pakistan army, killed innocent people and raped thousands as dictated in the Quran. (Q4:24) Unsurprisingly, today’s’ Islamists support the war criminals. On the other hand, many youths who assembled in the Shahbag square realized that the war criminals and the current Islamists are inspired by the Islamic scriptures. They created several anti-Islamic blogs and exposed the ugly face of Islam. Soon, one of the bloggers was assassinated and many were arrested by the government. It is interesting how Islam influences an individual’s mind. These young protestors, with their spirited hearts sing and lit up candles as seen in the picture. Whereas, thousands of angry Muslims beat innocent people to death, burn properties and ask for death penalty for the Atheist bloggers. They have formed a party called Hefajat-e-Islam and demanded 13-point Islamic agenda including a new blasphemy law, reinstate pledges to Allah in the constitution, ban women from mixing freely with men and make Islamic education mandatory. ________________________________________________ The 13-point agenda demanded by Hefazat…
1. Restore the phrase “Complete faith and trust in the Almighty Allah” in the constitution and repeal all the laws contrary to the holy Quran and Sunnah.
2. Pass a law in parliament keeping a provision of the maximum punishment of death sentence to prevent defaming Allah, Prophet Muhammad and Islam and smear campaigns against Muslims.
3. Take measures for stringent punishment against self-declared atheists and bloggers, led by the so-called Shahbagh movement, and anti-Islamists who made derogatory remarks against the Prophet. 
5. Make Islamic education mandatory from primary to higher secondary levels cancelling the anti-Islamic women policy and anti-religion education policy.
6. Officially declare Qadianis (Ahmadiyyas) as non-Muslim and stop their propaganda and all conspiratorial ill-moves.
7. Stop setting up sculptures at intersections, schools, colleges and universities across the country.
8. Lift restrictions on saying prayers in all mosques across the country, including Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, without any hassle and remove obstacles to carrying out religious activities.
9. Stop evil efforts to spread hatred in the mind of the young generation regarding Islam through the misrepresentation of religious dresses and cultures in the media.
10. Stop anti-Islam activities by NGOs across the country, including in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and "evil attempts" of Christian missionaries for conversion.
11. Stop attacks, mass killing, oppression and indiscriminate shooting on Alem-Ulama, devout followers of the Prophet and towhidi janata (revolutionary people).
12. Stop threatening teachers and students of Qawmi madrasas, Islamic scholars, imams and khatibs and conspiracies against them.
13. Free immediately all the arrested Islamic scholars, madrasa students and towhidi janata and withdraw all false cases filed against them, compensate the victims and bring the assailants to justice.

The political analysis by a fit and proper academician have a very different conclusion. The Shabag protest is actually a movement to seek justice against the collaborators during the Bangladesh / Pakistan spilt in 1971 in which the then Pakistani army tried to supress the conflict by brute force. The then collaborators are now the leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (JIB) which was actually banned after 1971. To evade the charges against them , the said 'leaders' of the JIB waged a propaganda war labelling the people against them (ie. Shabag protesters) 'atheists'.
The Islamist backlash has also raised tough questions about Bangladesh’s national identity: the majority of people in the country, while often deeply religious, still favour the multi-faith, tolerant Bangladeshi identity that was at the heart of the 1971 Liberation movement. They firmly reject the intrusion of religion into politics, and resent the way a flawed political and judicial system has persistently made it possible for those accused of these (and other) serious crimes to evade justice.
Against this backdrop, the many paradoxes of the Shahbag protests become clear: this is a peaceful mass protest that insists on the violence of capital punishment, and a popular demand for justice that is to be delivered from a flawed judicial process.
