Is Prince George ready for his first close-up?
Maria Puente, USA TODAY 3:20 p.m. EDT August 13, 2013
New official pictures of baby Prince George of Cambridge are expected next week, Kensington Palace confirms, and they could be snaps taken by his royal parents.
So far, all we've seen of the future king, born July 22, was an infant wrapped in a swaddling blanket in the arms of his mother, Duchess Kate, when she and Prince William emerged from St. Mary's Hospital in London the day after the birth.
Since then, nothing. Kate and George have been staying behind gates at her parents' country home outside London, and William has just returned to work as a helicopter pilot in Wales after his two-week paternity leave expired.
In the past, official royal baby pictures, including of William himself after he was born 31 years ago, have been formal, staged affairs by professional photographers such as Mario Testino, a favorite of Will's mother, Princess Diana. He was also the photographer who took the couple's engagement pictures.
But Will and Kate have not been afraid to break with royal conventions. The British media are reporting that the first official photos of George Alexander Louis are expected to be more casual family pictures taken by Will, Kate, her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and even sister Pippa Middleton.
The Mirror, quoting unnamed sources, reported that Kate doesn't want to upset George's routine with a formal photo shoot, so she's looking through pictures taken at the Middletons' estate. An art major in college, she is said to have a good eye and to prefer "natural and relaxed" pictures of the baby.
Otherwise, the first formal pictures of George are likely to be at his christening, probably in October. Historians and royal followers are eager to see the instantly iconic picture of the baby with his father, his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II. The last reigning monarch to be pictured with three generations of her heirs was Queen Victoria more than 100 years ago.
It's also possible there might be pictures before the christening, when the couple are expected to take George up to Scotland to visit the queen and Prince Philip, who will be at Balmoral for the next two months on their annual vacation.

Prince William & Kate May Release Family Snapshots of Prince George Instead of Professional Portrait
By Simon Perry 08/12/2013 at 08:30 AM EDT
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, with Prince George
Is the Duchess of Cambridge adding photographer to her list of royal responsibilities?
While the world waits for the official portrait of Prince William and Kate and their newborn son, Prince George, the young couple is weighing another option: releasing a set of snapshots possibly taken by Kate and the Middletons, a palace source tells PEOPLE.
After the initial news release, the images would then be distributed on social media outlets like Twitter and on the couple's website.
"The whole point of these photos is that as many people have access to them who need to and we will find the easiest way of doing that," the source says.
It means that the Duke, Duchess and Prince of Cambridge would not pose for a professional photographer, or have to welcome someone into the Middleton family home (where Kate and George have been staying while William returned to work).
But should the new parents decide to go the traditional route of sitting for a professional portrait, a wire service will be invited to snap the photos.
More formal-style portraits may be taken around the time of George's christening this fall. |

Prince George Commemorated with New Jewelry Line
By Monique Jessen
08/13/2013 at 09:00 AM EDT
The birth of Prince George is being marked in many ways, and now jewelry is on the list.
The collection's designer, Claudia Bradby, has worked with the Duchess of Cambridge before and draws her inspiration from the Middleton crest, which features three acorns to represent their three children – Kate, Pippa and James.
"Mighty oaks from little acorns grow – that's the saying and the sentiment behind it," Bradby tells PEOPLE, adding: "Plus, it has some relevance to them as a couple because the inspiration for the design was drawn from her own family crest."

Bradby's designs include a silver necklace with a pearl acorn charm as well as a silver bracelet with royal-themed charms.
Bradby collaborated with Kate in 2007 on a line of jewelry for Junior Jigsaw (Kate worked as the accessories buyer for the fashion label at the time). Bradby says she found the then-girlfriend of Prince William to be "warm, charming and intelligent," although it was through her husband, Tom Bradby – former royal correspondent for ITV who conducted the official engagement interview – that she attended the royal wedding.
Having been impressed with Kate from their first meeting, Bradby says she has no doubt Kate will excel in her newest role. "I think she will be a fantastic mother. She has a really fantastic mother herself and she comes from a very stable family. I think she has got everything going for her," she says |

Prince George Expected to Inspire Thousands of Other Baby Georges
By Tim Nudd
07/25/2013 at 12:45 PM EDT
Britain is about to be overrun by baby Georges.
Royal baby names are always trendsetters. And thanks to William and Kate's new prince, George should become a hugely popular baby name in the U.K. practically overnight, much as William and Harry were three decades ago, Ancestry.com says.
On average, the birth of a royal baby increases the popularity of his or her name by almost a third – 32 percent – in the year following, the site says.
That means the U.K. can expect 1,400 more Georges to be born in the coming year, reaching approximately 5,740 in total, versus the past year.
PEOPLE cover
That would push the name George from 12th to fourth place on the list of most popular boy names.
The names William and Harry saw their own mini booms following the brothers' births in the early 1980s. The name William became 23 percent more popular, while Harry shot up 55 percent.
In terms of sheer numbers, Prince Andrew's birth had the biggest impact on expecting parents, with 5,500 more Andrews born in 1961 than in 1960.
In percentage terms, William and Harry's cousin Zara Phillips holds the record, with 92 percent more Zaras born in the year after she was born in 1981.
Derived from the Greek name Georgious, meaning farmer, George has been the third most common name for English monarchs (six) since 1066, after Henry and Edward (both eight), Ancestry.com says. |

Prince Harry: I'll Keep Prince George 'Out of Harm's Way'
By Simon Perry
07/25/2013 at 04:15 PM EDT
Prince Harry says he'll keep Prince George out of harm's way – but he'll also make sure he has "fun."
On Thursday, the newly minted Uncle Harry told reporters at the opening of "The Sentebale: Stories of Hope" exhibition (which features photographs by Chris Jackson of Getty Images) that he met his newborn nephew the previous day at Kensington Palace, where the baby was "crying his eyes out, like all babies."
But it wasn't all tears between the two – Harry said he also had his first "cuddle" with the infant, too.
"It's fantastic to have an addition to the family," he said. "I only hope my brother knows how expensive my babysitting charges are!"
What does it mean to Harry to be an uncle?
He explained that his role is "to make sure he has a good upbringing, to keep him out of harm's way and make sure he has fun. The rest of it I leave to the parents."

As for which parent the new Prince resembles, Harry can't put his finger on it just yet: "I think you can judge that one for yourself. I’ve no idea," he said. |
