KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 — The ex-wife to the son of Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Taib Mahmud was asked at the Syariah court here today whether she was a virgin when she married him.
At the retrial of Shahnaz Abdul Majid’s RM400 million divorce from Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Abdul Taib, the latter’s lawyer, Saadiah Din, also asked Shahnaz if she had cooked and cleaned at their matrimonial home.
“Were you a virgin when you got married?” Saadiah asked at the Syariah High Court here today.
“I was never married,” Shahnaz replied, explaining that she was single at the time of her marriage to Mahmud Abu Bekir in 1991.
Shahnaz, 50, also said that she did not cook during the eight years when she and Mahmud Abu Bekir stayed at their matrimonial home in Kuching, Sarawak.
“You didn’t clean the house either?” Saadiah asked.
“I disagree. I did clean the house, but I had help from a maid,” replied Shahnaz.

After questioning Shahnaz over her virginity as well as cooking and cleaning responsibilities, the lawyer continued the cross-examination by asking her when she and Mahmud Abu Bekir last had sex.
“I’m certain that it was in 2000 in Kuching,” said Shahnaz.
She said that she and Mahmud Abu Bekir stayed at their matrimonial home in Sarawak from 1992 to 1999, after which she moved to Kuala Lumpur in 2000.
Shahnaz said that she first stayed at her father-in-law’s and mother’s homes here, before moving to her own house in Damansara Heights in 2001 that her then-husband had bought for her at RM1.75 million.
Shahnaz, who is the sister of popular singer Datuk Sheila Majid, added that the last time that she and Mahmud Abu Bekir stayed under the same roof was in 2000.
In her divorce papers, Shahnaz, who holds an MBA in finance, is seeking some RM400 million in a divorce settlement, including matrimonial property and “mutaah” (Islamic conciliatory payment), as well as half the assets owned by her ex-husband,
including some seven luxury cars, thousands of hectares of land in Sarawak, homes in countries abroad and shares in about 15 companies.
According to previous media reports, Shahnaz had sought to end the marriage in accordance with the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984, citing her husband’s alleged failure to give her “nafkah batin” (conjugal rights) since 2001.
Shahnaz and Mahmud Abu Bekir married on January 9, 1992, when they were aged 28, and they have a 20-year-old son named Raden Murya. Mahmud Abu Bekir filed for divorce almost two decades later on May 11, 2011.
Shahnaz also revealed today that her matrimonial home in Kuching was a three-storey mansion, beside Taib’s house, with 12 rooms and Italian furniture, but did not state the value of the property.
She added that her ex-husband had charged RM132,284.71 on an American Express platinum credit card in October 2012.
“He makes payments (at the end of the month),” said Shahnaz.
In November last year, a Maybank customer service manager testified that Mahmud Abu Bekir had charged a whopping RM782,520.88 to his American Express card from January to June 2012.
Shahnaz also testified today that Mahmud Abu Bekir owns several million-ringgit luxury cars such as two Ferraris, a Bentley, and a Lamborghini.
She has testified that Mahmud Abu Bekir has an estimated RM1 billion in assets locally and some US$700 million (RM2.2 billion) in bank accounts globally.
Last December, a witness from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) told the court that Mahmud Abu Bekir has amassed some RM1.3 million in savings and about 400,000 units in trust funds.
Shahnaz also testified last September about the domestic violence she suffered during her marriage, accusing Mahmud Abu Bekir of beating, punching and kicking her from 1994 to 1998.
She had said that she did not lodge police reports or seek medical treatment to avoid embarrassing the Sarawak chief minister’s son.
