Who is the target audience of Japanese Asadoras ?

The primary target audience for asadora is women. All the series have featured a woman character in the main role.

There are two types of asadora stories :-

# Historical : Depicts the life of one woman, from her childhood to old age.

# Contemporary : Depicts the life of a young woman in contemporary times.

Amachan, which ended in September was of the contemporary type (the story timeline started in 2008 I think, and ended in 2012). The current series Gochisousan is of the historical/one woman's life story type. It starts in the late Meiji period, around 1910 or so, when the heroine is a little girl, but the main part of the story starts in 1922, when the heroine is 17. The first episode shows a brief scene of the heroine in 1945, serving food to kids in the middle of a bombed out city, so the series will at least go to that period most likely.

Asadora (朝ドラ) is a slang term meaning ' morning drama ' . The formal name given  to these daily 15 minute dramas aired by the NHK is 連続テレビ小説 - renzoku  terebi shousetsu - serialized television novels. They have been  broadcast  since 1958. For the past  few years at least, they have been produced alternately by NHK's Tokyo  studio and their Osaka studio, with 2 6 month long series airing per year. (The one that ended in September,  Amachan, was produced by NHK Tokyo; the current one, Gochisousan, is  produced by NHK Osaka.) A few series in the past have been year-long ones, such as the famous Oshin.

While they only used to be aired in the mornings after the news (hence the moniker asadora), nowadays you can  catch several  rebroadcasts throughout the day, on both regular NHK1 and the NHK BS (satellite) Premium channel, plus all 6 episodes for the week are shown as an omnibus on Sundays. And for the past 1-2 years or something people can watch them online via video on demand.

Women are the main target audience, but that doesn't mean that they don't appeal to men, unless you're the type of male who finds any story starring a woman to be beneath you or something. They are usually very well written, have great costumes, sets and locales that are pretty historically accurate, and have top notch casts. Amachan in particular had an all-star cast of well known actresses in supporting roles. My stepfather loves them - before he  retired last year, he always used to time his mornings precisely so that  he could catch the 7:30 am showing before leaving for work.

Most women protagonists of asadora are very strong characters; many have careers outside the home. The heroines of some recent asadora include :

# Umechan Sensei : a female medical doctor in Tokyo during the postwar period

# Carnation : Based on the real life story of Ayako Koshino, a fashion designer and the mother of the Koshino sisters, who are all also fashion designers (Junko, Michiko, HIroko)

# Jun to Ai : a woman who makes a career in the hotel business

# Ohisama : a teacher during the pre-war to postwar periods

The contemporary-setting dramas tend to star young girls who aren't necessarily that focused (e.g. Aki in Amachan) but they usually have very strong female role models, such as Aki's grandmother Natsuko (played by the great Nobuko Miyamoto, best known internationally for the movies Tampopo and A Taxing Woman) who is a 60 plus year old ama, or female diver who harvests sea urchins for a living.

Snagging the main role in an asadora can be a great career booster too. The role typically goes to a new actress, but it occasionally goes to one with an already established career, such as the actress who plays the lead in Gochisousan, Anne (aka Anne Watanabe).

Ratings for asadora are typically in the 15% range, but Amachan was a big hit that reached 27% ratings at least once and averaged around 20%. Gochisousan is also very popular so far, already surpassing the 27% + rating achieved by Amachan and also averaging over 20%.

Atsuko Maeda, 27, a pop cultural icon and original member of the all-girl group AKB48, has married actor Ryo Katsuji, 31, an official of his management company said on Tuesday.

“We will continue to support each other and sincerely engage in each and every project offered to us,” they wrote in a joint statement. The marriage was registered Monday.

Maeda, a native of Chiba Prefecture, was among several founding members of the group, named after Tokyo’s Akihabara district, in 2005.

She was elected as the group’s most popular member in an annual vote by fans in 2009 and 2011, but quit the group in 2012 to pursue a career as an actor.

Katsuji, a Tokyo native, has appeared in various TV dramas, movies and theater productions, including the hit series “Amachan,” which aired on public broadcaster NHK in 2013.
