Maha Mrityutanjaya

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is a great death conquering mantra bestowed by Lord Shiva for the welfare of mankind so as to help overcome the fear of death. It creates a powerful protective shield of divine vibrations that wards off all negativities and evil forces. Alluding to three-eyed Shiva it means, 'We worship Lord Shiva who is immensely merciful, whose fragrance pervades the entire universe, who imparts strength and nourishment to body & mind.  May all my afflictions and suffering get uprooted similar to the effortless falling of the ripened fruit from the tree. May the shackles of all bondages be broken, freeing me forever. O Lord, grant me liberation from this endless cycle of birth, suffering, death and rebirth. O Lord, bestow me with the nectar of such an elixir'.

In this presentation, Shivratri Puja is presented in a simplified way to abet understanding among those interested in it. Vtk Puja is usually performed by Kashmiri Pandits on Phalgun Krishna Paksha Dvadashi. Sometimes it may fall on Tryodashi.  It is actually performed on Shivratri eve. Hindus elsewhere celebrate Shivratri on Triyodadhi or Chaturdashi.

Kashmiri Pandit's worship Bhairwa Vtknath and hence the worship is called Vtk puja. Bhairwa as per Kashmir Shaivism is a being, who through his saddhna has risen to a status of Bhairwa - just next to Lord Shiva in granting boons to devotees. Eight Bhirwas have achieved that status so far, for whom there are eight dedicated temples in Kashmir. Vtknath Bhairwa is one of them. Hence, on this day Kashmiri Pandits worship Vataknath Bhairwa in the presence of Lord Shiva and Parvati along with Shiv Ganas (attendants).

Bhookailash - Nilakantha Deva Come!

Excerpt from old movie

Rakshas King Ravana decides to invade Amaravathi, the capital of the heavenly kingdom of Indra. Scared of Ravana's plans, Indra asks Narada for help. Narada informs Indra that Ravana's strength comes from the worship performed by Kaikasi, Ravana's mother. He then suggests that Indra sabotage Ravana's mother's worship of saikatha lingam, a sand sculpture representation of Lord Siva.

Ravana decides to perform penance and bring Lord Siva's Atma Lingam for his mother to worship. Hearing of Ravana's plans from Narada, Goddess Parvathi, Lord Siva's consort, appeals to Lord Vishnu. When Lord Siva appears to Ravana to grant his wish, Lord Vishnu manipulates Ravana's mind and makes him wish for Goddess Parvathi. As Ravana proceeds home with Goddess Parvathi, Narada meets him midway and tells him that his companion is fake Parvathi.

Dejected by the subterfuge, Ravana returns Goddess Parvathi to Lord Siva. During his return journey, he meets Mandodari, the young princess of Pathala, and believing her to be the real Goddess Parvathi, marries her. Eventually, he realizes what happened and appeals to Lord Siva for forgiveness by presenting his severed head. Lord Siva presents Ravana with Atma Lingam and warns him that, if the Atma Lingam ever touches the earth, it can never be moved again. Narada instigates Lord Vinayaka to trick Ravana into grounding the Atma Lingam at what later became known as Gokarna Kshethram in Karnataka.

Lord Dakshinamurti

He is the first Master of the Cosmos. The name 'Dakshinamurti' means the Deity who is facing the southern direction. Lord Shiva Himself came down in the form of Dakshinamurthy and sat under a banyan tree to give Enlightenment to the first men of the planet Earth. It is said in the scriptures that Brahma -- the God of creation after intense penance got the power to create. He created Sanaka, Sanantana, Sant kumara and Sanat sujata , the first men of the planet Earth,. He asked them to multiply the human population on the planet. But all four of them were interested in Sannyas and Enlightenment rather than the job given by Brahma. So they did intense penance towards Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva pleased by the penance of the first men, came down as Dakshinamurti and gave Enlightenment to all these four men just through the deep silence that He radiated.

Dakshinamurti is the Lord of intelligence, intellect, spirituality. Dakshinamurti is also the Adhidevata -- the ruling Deity of Jupiter -- the heaviest among all the nine planets of Vedic Astrology , is called. One of the meaning of the word 'Guru' means 'heaviness. To receive the best benefits from Jupiter, worship of Dakshinamurti, the first Guru,  is prescribed.

Just as a person can be identified by name, a Divine energy can be identified and propitiated by chanting its 'name'. Sahasranamam literally means '1000 names' representing 1000 qualities. In the Vedic tradition, the number 1000 represents the complete flowering of the being. The sahasrara chakra, located on the crown of the head, is symbolized by a thousand-petalled lotus. When the lotus flowers completely (i.e. when the chakra is completely opened), it means we are living life at the optimum in all our dimensions -- the state of jeevanmukti or 'living enlightenment'. The deeply mystical Purusha Sookta, the Vedic hymn describing the Cosmic Being, describes him as 'sahasra sheershaa purushah' or 'the one with a thousand heads', representing the state of complete enlightenment.

Each of the thousand names in the sahasranamam invokes a particular auspicious quality of the Lord. Each name is also a distinct energetic vibration. When we recall these qualities, we spontaneously draw that particular healing vibration to ourselves and align ourselves with it.
These healing vibrations have immense power, greater than we can imagine. They can enter our cells and completely overhaul our bio-memory, cleansing even deep-rooted diseases like cancer and bringing about silent transformation. Contemplation on positive energies and qualities is also a powerful meditation. It represents a conscious decision to tune ourselves to the Divine. Miraculous as it may seem, chanting the sahasranamam with deep devotion can bea compelling technique to overcome depression, even in patients who are on medication.

Benefits of Dakshinamurti

• Burning away of Karmas collected in so many births
• Awakening of the Kundalini
• Awakening of the third eye -- the Ajna chakra
• Power of grasping, retention, memory and intelligence take a quantum leap
• Visible improvement in creativity
• Clarity in thinking
• Reduction in the number of thoughts per second
• Improvement in the health condition
• Healing of Hypertension
• Expression of qualities of Enlightenment
• Above all Enlightenment experience

A Respectful Salute to Teachers

The word Guru has many connotations; a spiritual guide, sports teacher, a person elevated in spirit and strength or one with a calm mind and clear thought. All of us seek inspiration, encouragement and guidance from a Guru. It therefore is important and necessary that due respect be offered to such a person.
