A man was arrested for apparently kicking a cat 20 feet into the air - and then casually smoking a cigarette while he laughed about it with friends.
Accused Andre Robinson, 21, was caught by police after footage from last Friday's attack surfaced from a friend's mobile phone, and admitted in a criminal complaint on Tuesday that he kicked the cat.
Robinson spent the night in jail before he was released, but faces court on June 9th after being charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
In the video, a man is seen laughing as he squared up to the poor animal. Turning to his friends, he tells them to watch as he swings his foot and hits the cat hard with his foot.
The cat goes flying into the air, over some bushes and disappears off screen as the camera follows it, while the man is heard celebrating off screen.
His friends are heard shouting with laughter as he broke into a open-mouthed grin and waved his hands in the air, howling with laughter as he held what appeared to be a cigarette.
The video, taken in Bedford, Brooklyn, in New York, was posted online and amassed thousands of views and comments from angry cat lovers who were keen to see Robinson convicted for his terrible crime.
One commenter posted: "This is NEVER okay to do. Please share; hopefully somebody will recognise this fool."
It circulated on Facebook for days before police picked it up on Monday and tracked him down after animal lovers identified the scaffolding company seen in the background of the video.
The cat, named King by local residents, has also been found after it went missing in the aftermath of the attack.
After Robinson was arrested, his mother Mary Kirby, 48, leapt to his defence, claiming that her 'animal loving' son must have been on drugs to do such a terrible thing.
She said: "He had to be high on something. It's very out of his character. He had to be high to do what he did. This isn't him.
"He loves animals. He loved his cats, he had dogs, he always loved them."
Robinson faces his charges at Brooklyn Crown Court in June.
