[Tempatan] Penduduk BBB bantah Aeon Big jual arak secara borong

KUALA LUMPUR 7 Nov.

Selasa lalu, Aeon Big (M) Sdn.

Bangi residents protest supermarket liquor licence, claims will spoil alcohol-free neighbourhood

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 ― On the heels of last month’s uproar over Oktoberfest, a group of residents in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor are up in arms against an application by AEON Big to sell liquor in their area, arguing that the licence would spoil the image of their alcohol-free neighbourhood.

Malay daily Utusan Malaysia reported the licence for the hypermarket was seen as “nonsensical” in the Muslim-majority neighbourhood, as highlighted by the Serdang Umno Youth after receiving complaints from some residents.

“Umno Youth has received many complaints from Bangi residents who are restless with the suggestion because more than 70 per cent of them are Muslims,” the political division’s wing chief Ahmad Yani Ahmad Aziz was quoted saying.

The suggestion Ahmad Yani was referring to was an application by AEON Big (M) Sdn Bhd to apply for an alcohol wholesale permit for the area from the Hulu Langat District Licensing Board, as advertised in a newspaper.

Ahmad Yani also pointed out that the township is inhabited by students from the nearby Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Furthermore, he claimed that the wholesale licence, if approved, would tarnish the township’s image as an alcohol-free area.

Ahmad Yani said his chapter is in the process of a finishing a petition to be delivered to the licensing board, and in the mean time, it will deliver protest notice to the hypermarket.

“We request and urge the responsible party to explain to Bandar Baru Bangi’s residents about the licence application,” he added.

Sale of alcohol is permitted in Malaysia, but restricted only to those above 18 years-old and non-Muslim.

Last month, Muslim hardliners and groups had protested against the annual beer fest Oktoberfest, driving a celebration originally planned outside the 1 Utama shopping mall in Petaling Jaya to be shifted into a carpark building.
