Terengganu’s Johnny Wong socks makes it big in US, Europe, Asia

KUALA TERENGGANU: If Malaysia can have the likes of Datuk Jimmy Choo for shoes, now we may take pride in Terengganu's indigenous son Johnny Wong for his socks.

Although Wong is not yet world acclaimed like Choo, the father of four has made it big with his self branded socks, aptly named after him.

The Johnny Wong Socks brand, comprising custom made healthcare and fashion socks, has been sold to half the United States population via Walmart since 2006.

Wong, 35, is also exporting his brand to Europe, China, Taiwan, Singapore and a few other Asian countries, earning millions of ringgit eversince he ventured out ten years ago with a simple investment of RM250,000.

Wong is chief executive of My Socks Malaysia Sdn Bhd which has its knitting factoring in Gong Badak, close to the Sultan Mahmud International Airport.

"It was challenge posed by my family to come out with something innovative, like how Malaysians had done to become successful businessmen," he said. the Johnny Wong Socks lately created the Peranakan styled mek (queen) and awang (prince) kebaya socks that has caught the attention of not only the east coast fraternity but Malaysians and tourists at large.

Even Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman was impressed and commended Wong for his effort. "The menteri besar expressed confidence in my socks after trying a pair himself. He wished me great success and hoped I will promote Terengganu to the world," said Wong.

The burly figure was a hit during the just concluded Terengganu International Peranakan Festival 2015 at Kampung Cina when 20,000 pairs of his variety of colourful merchandise were snapped up like hot cakes.

“I kept the prices of my socks as low as RM10 to make it affordable for people to buy. Also, it was my way of promoting the Peranakan culture and batik to the world,” said Wong.

Wong has already created a niche market for his healthcare socks, which retail at RM250 a pair. “My healthcare socks are perhaps the best fittings on offer in the international market.

“They are hand woven, seamless, nano-coated for anti-fungal and microbiological purposes. Thus, they help minimize skin disease on the foot and are ideal for not only the general public but business executives as well,” he said. Wong is confident that once one tries wearing his socks, they will be very comfortable with it and not look for other brands.

On the mek and awang kebaya socks, Wong said he always wanted to be creative and decided to use computer aided designs for colourful and vibrant patterns that moved with the times.

“Besides being catchy, the kebaya socks make ideal gifts and for those who like to make soft toys. In fact, I have now introduced online buying through Facebook so as to ease customers’ needs,” he said. Wong uses cotton material which is comfortable and easily acceptable by his customers.

Asked on plans to move to larger markets like India, Russia and Indonesia, Wong said he was contemplating marketing his products there very soon.

Jual stokin tak urban mah. Stokin yang kita pakai akan ditutupi dengan kasut dan seluar panjang, jadi macam mana nak show off pada orang lain?
