In a bizarre twist to an already tragic tale of murder, a South Korean man pretended to be his girlfriend by responding to her phone text messages for two weeks after he strangled her and buried her body.
Sunny Kim, who studied at the University of Albany in New York had moved back to South Korea to take up a teaching job and soon struck up a friendship with a man known as Mr Lee, Koreaboo reported earlier this month.
She shared many photographs on their blossoming relationship on her Facebook posting. However, on 2 May, Sunny abruptly disappeared according to police reports. In the two weeks following her disappearance, no one suspected anything amiss as Sunny kept replying her phone messages to her family and friends in exactly the same manner as before.
It was only when Sunny didn’t go to work at her new job did things start to feel strange. Unknown to her boyfriend, on the day of the murder, Sunny had just signed a contract for a new job as reported in Koreaboo.
When Sunny’s boss tried to contact her, Mr. Lee responded using Sunny’s phone, “Don’t contact me. I am going back to the United States to study.”
After two weeks had passed, Mr. Lee inexplicably surrendered himself to the police in Busan city.
Sunny's former sorority sisters in the kappa-phi-lambda chapter at the University at Albany SUNY had posted on their website a translation of an article from a Korean website, sharing the details of the extremely disturbing and horrifying tragedy.
"Sunny was strangled by her boyfriend when she told him that she wanted to breakup, then he buried her body on a nearby hill.
"After killing her, Sunny’s boyfriend tried to take his own life, and later called the police, confessing to her murder.
"According to the translation, her boyfriend had a history of abusive behavior and stalking, but no one realized how serious the situation was."
After finding her body on 18 May, police officers reportedly identified signs of broken bones and bruises on Sunny's face. She had been strangled by her boyfriend, who then stuffed her into a luggage and buried it in a nearby forest.
