SIBU: A picnic at Belawai Beach turned tragic on Monday – the first day of the Chinese New Year – when two in a group of four went missing after they were ‘swallowed’ by waves.
Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department have identified the two missing as 27-year-old woman Amy Amira Pendita and 15-year-old boy Muhd Hanis Tajudin.
Two boys – Azlan Suria, 16, and Ahmad Mansor, 17 – were saved.
According to eye witnesses, Amy was trying to pull Muhd Hanis, a student of SMK Belawai, to safety.
The four are from Kampung Jerijeh in Sarikei Division.
Eye witnesses said an unidentified woman was almost swept away by the waves but was saved in the nick of time while other picnickers managed to swim ashore.
The incident at 5.45pm occurred when about 14 picnickers were in the sea that suddenly turned choppy.
Fire and Rescue Department personnel at Sungai Merah station here were informed, and they rushed over with personnel from Civil Defence Department.
They aborted their search mission at 9pm and continued their search at daybreak yesterday.
They were joined by Rela personnel.
At press time, the search remained futile. - Sarawak News
