Although silicon rubber plays an important role in the medical field, but there are still a lot of problems. The main development direction is to improve the hydrophilic performance. Due to its hydrophobicity, silicone rubber will cause a mild foreign body sensation after being implanted in the body. So it is very necessary to improve the hydrophilicity of silicone rubber. The main solution to the problem is adopting the surface modification, such as coating some hydrophilic substance on the surface of silicone rubber, or grafting on silicone rubber surface with radiation method. Other ways like plasma processing methods can also improve its hydrophilicity.

Although China has made a substantial progress on developing medical rubber and its products in recent years, there are still large gaps when compared with developed countries and the development requirements of domestic medicine. They mainly manifest in 1) The technology research is out dated. 2) The types of raw material mostly relying on import.     3) The products lack quality stability and reliability. 4) The products are low-tech and low value-added. 

According to some relevant data, it is predicted that, by 2015, China’s market value of human body biological implant materials will reach 0.8 ~ $1 billion. Therefore, China’s related departments should seize this opportunity to accelerate the development of medical rubber products.
