Ivan Reitman, who made the first two Ghostbusters films, has announced that he will not direct the third installment.

The news comes following the death of one of the stars Harold Ramis, who died last month of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rare disease that involves swelling of the blood vessels.

Ivan said he made the decision after attending Ramis' funeral last month. "It was really moving and it made me think about a lot of things," he said in an interview with Deadline Hollywood.

Ivan has worked on the film for several years which has gone through several rewrites and a failed attempt to persuade Bill Murray to come back as Dr Peter Venkman.

However, Ivan will stay on the team as a producer and will help Sony find a new director so that the movie can start shooting in 2015.

He has remained positive about the story, which has been written by Etan Cohen who is best known for his work on Tropic Thunder and Men In Black 3. Dan Aykroyd, who wrote and starred in the first two films, has also helped with the script.

Ivan said the studio is “very excited” by the new draft and hopes the film will attract a new audience, as well as fans of the original Ghostbusters, which remains one of the most successful comedy movies of all time, with takings of more than £300m.
