Alien (1979)

Synopsis
Director Ridley Scott's breakthough film, an immensely successful blend of horror and science fiction, is a classic in both genres and spawned a host of sequels and imitators. Starring Sigourney Weaver as warrant officer Ellen Ripley, ALIEN focuses on the crew of the space cargo ship Nostromo, which lands on a moribund planet in response to a faint SOS. Inside a crashed ship, the crew members come upon strange pods, one of which spews forth a repellently fleshy insectile creature that locks on to the face of the unlucky Kane (John Hurt). Despite Ripley's advice, science officer Ash (Ian Holm) allows Kane to return to the ship, where the creature finally releases its grip. Soon, however, in one of the film's most infamous scenes, one of its offspring explodes horribly from Kane's stomach and scurries away. Dallas (Tom Skerritt), the vessel's captain, leads the others in a search for the rapidly growing, acid-dripping alien before it can cut them down--one by one.

A triumph of art direction, set design, and special effects, ALIEN gains much of its impact from the contrast between the bleak, antiseptic beauty of the space vessel's interior and the primordial horror of the alien, a brilliantly original fusion of insect, man, and machine designed by Swiss surrealist painter H.R. Giger. The top-notch cast also includes Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, and Harry Dean Stanton.

Cast: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto

Tidbits
Theatrical Release: May 25, 1979.

Theatrical Rerelease: October 29, 2003.

For ALIEN: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT, the original negative was restored and digitally remastered. In addition, director Ridley Scott reviewed archival footage not included in the original and chose specific never-before-seen footage to include in this special version of the film.

Aliens (1986)

Synopsis
Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the sole survivor from the original ALIEN, is awakened after 57 years of drifting through space, her stories disbelieved by Company executives who tell her that the alien抯 planet is now inhabited and colonized. When contact is suddenly lost with the colonists, Ripley returns to the planet with a squad of marines, an android (Lance Henriksen), and a Company executive (Paul Reiser) with a mission of his own. Once on the planet, no survivors can be found except for Newt, a little girl who awakens motherly instincts in Ripley just in time for the acid-blooded aliens to attack in what quickly becomes a one-sided battle for sheer survival. Considered by many to be the best of the series, ALIENS is a fast-paced, high-intensity thrill ride that set a new standard for action films and cemented director James Cameron抯 status as one of Hollywood抯 leading directors following the success of THE TERMINATOR. Weaver received an Academy Award nomination and became a feminist hero for her strong, sensitive performance as the survivor Ripley, while costars Reiser, Henriksen, and Bill Paxton all give career-making performances in this landmark sci-fi extravaganza.

Movie Quotes
"What the hell are we supposed to use, man? Harsh language?"--Frost (Ricco Ross) after Gorman has ordered the troops to unload their weapons

"They mostly come at night. Mostly"--Newt (Carrie Henn) on the aliens

"Game over, man! Game over!"--Hudson (Bill Paxton)

"Get away from her, you bitch!"--Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) to the queen alien as she attacks Newt

Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Carrie Henn, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, William Hope, Jenette Goldstein, Al Matthews, Mark Rolston, Ricco Ross, Colette Hiller

oh my, what we have here ..

Alien 3 (1992)

Synopsis
David Fincher's feature debut, ALIEN 3, picks up almost directly after the events in ALIENS, finding Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) frozen in suspended animation as her ship crashes on Fiorina 161, a prison planet. When awakened by the prison's staff, she discovers that she is the sole survivor of her crew. Trapped on a barren planet with convicts and no weapons of any kind, Ripley soon realizes that an alien was also on the ship and has survived. As the savage creature begins to massacre inmates, Ripley bands together with the remaining prisoners and attempts to destroy it by wits alone.

Filmed at a time when big guns and high technology dominated the screen, ALIEN 3 deserves commendation for its unique premise--battling a vicious alien creature with no weapons and almost no resources whatsoever. This scenario makes for an unusual and intriguing science fiction thriller that is also notable for Fincher's bleak industrial visuals; the film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Charles Dance, Paul McGann, Brian Glover, Charles S. Dutton, Lance Henriksen

Movie Quotes
"Don't be afraid. I'm part of the family."--Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) to the alien

Tidbits
Theatrical release: May 22, 1992.

Filmed in England.

ALIEN 3 was director David Fincher's first feature film. He had previously directed music videos.

Alien Resurrection (1997)

Synopsis
In ALIEN 4: RESURRECTION, the fourth installment of the wildly popular series of science fiction movies that began with ALIEN, a drop of Ellen Ripley's (Sigourney Weaver) blood spawns a part human, part alien Ripley clone. Now that Ripley is dead, the clone has fallen into the hands of government scientists who want to harness the Ripley clone's breeding powers. When the new and improved Ripley lands on a ship of androids, her mere appearance sets the action rolling. Stepping in to help put a stop to the madness is tiny android named Call (Winona Ryder), as well as the ship's fellow crew members (including Dominique Pinon, Ron Perlman, and Michael Wincott).

For the first time in his feature film career, French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (DELICATESSEN, THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN) takes sole directorial credit, leaving his partner Marc Caro to concentrate on artistic direction. ALIEN RESURRECTION has far more in common with ALIEN 3 than the series' first two parts, most notably due to its overtly humorous tone. Jeunet also applies his traditional Gothic visual style to the slimy, effects-heavy riot, resulting in a work that is as reliant upon style as it is substance. Scripted by Joss Whedon, creator of the Warner Brothers television show, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, the film marks an energetic and flashy transition to Hollywood film making for Jeunet.

Movie Quotes
"I thought you were dead."--Distephano (Raymond Cruz). "Yeah, I get that a lot."--Ripley (Sigourney Weaver)

Tidbits
Released theatrically: November 26, 1997.

Shot on location in California and Ottawa, Ontario.

No camera tricks were involved in Sigourney Weaver's seemingly impossible behind-the-back basketball shot--she did it all by herself.

Review: Alien 1979

Pros: Scary, compelling - a haunted house of a movie
Cons: Not for those of a nervous disposition.

Alien burst onto our screens in 1979, dripping with goo and introducing HR Giger's gruesomely imagined montrous alien.

Giger's alien is still very much present in the rest of the Alien series - as is Sigourney Weaver.

The future mapped out by Alien is one where self-interest is foremost. The Nostromo is a cargo ship, one of the worker bees of the human conquest of space, and carrier of the spoils of other worlds.

When the crew of the Nostromo answer a distress signal originating from the abandoned planetoid LV426, they encounter a species even deadlier than themselves, and one horribly successful at colonisation.

Kane (John Hurt), a crew member on the landing party finds millions of reptilian eggs dripping liquid upwards in defiance of the laws of gravity and in one shocking second an egg bursts open and a strange alien life-form attaches itself to his face.

Kane becomes a surrogate mother to the alien implanted deep within his body, and the subsequent birth scene is one of the most shocking incidents on film, even today.

Soon the quiet heartbeat of the Nostromo抯 engines is countered with sinister dripping noises, and the alien starts to modify the ship with its resinous secretions, as it had done on the planetoid. The crew find to their cost that they are ill-equipped to deal with the consequences of rescuing Kane...

Although the alien and its grotesque offspring are about as inhuman in appearance as is possible, all goo and insectlike carapace, they are closer to the humans of this future than is comfortable.

Watching Alien can at times feel like lifting a rock and recoiling at what we find underneath.

H R Giger, the Swiss artist, provided the strangely insectile and alien designs for the xenomorph, and his sexually charged images give the film an truly alien look that has been widely imitated, but never bettered.

Although you never see the alien until the last scenes of the film, its presence can be keenly felt. The tension the crew feel in the claustrophobic belly of the ship is communicated directly to the audience through both the stunning sets and the eerie music that is instantly recognisable as Alien, and has been repeated in some measure through the whole series of Alien films.

No review of Alien would be complete without mentioning Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the all-action heroine of Alien, who desperately fights to survive against all odds.

Weaver made this part her own, and has now made four films in the Alien series, all with different directors, each of whom gives the Alien concept a slightly different twist.

I still think that Alien, the first of this series, is the best, and unmatched for the sheer edge of the seat terror you experience, not just the first, but every time you watch this film.

This is one the few films that improves with every viewing, as there is always more of Giger's fabulously detailed and realised vision to wonder at.

Buy it, watch it, fear it.

Alien: The Director's Cut (2003)

Synopsis
For the first time in nearly a quarter-century, movie audiences will be able to experience Alien on the big screen, as Twentieth Century Fox releases Alien The Director's Cut, a special edition of director Ridley Scott's science fiction/horror classic, in theaters nationwide this Halloween.

For this digitally remastered special edition of what many have called the "scariest movie ever made," Ridley Scott has incorporated new footage never before seen in movie houses.

Working closely with Twentieth Century Fox, Scott oversaw a restoration of the original film's negative, as well as further digital enhancements. In addition, Scott and his team of archivists went through over 100 boxes of film footage, unseen in almost 25 years, which were discovered in a London vault. From this wealth of material, Scott selected new "Director's Cut" footage, which then underwent digital restoration, matching it to Alien's news-"polished" negative. The film also features a brand-new six-track digital stereo mix.

Fox released the original Alien in May 1979. The film was hailed by critics and audiences worldwide as seminal work of science fiction, and went on to gross over $100 million worldwide, a remarkable number for that era. The film's success spawned a film franchise for the studio, with three adventures in the saga following in 1986, 1992, and 1997.

Alien launched the career of Sigourney Weaver, whose character Ellen Ripley became one of the genre's first and most enduring heroines.

The film also stars Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Sir Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto. The producers are Gordon Carroll, David Giler and Walter Hill, and the screenplay was written by Dan O'Bannon from a story by O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. --

Aku tak puas hati alien 4 pasal Ellen Ripley no longer berpijak di bumi nyata. (walaupon aku tahu cakap camni memang macam miss the point pasal memang dia sepatutnya begitu since dia only half human half android). tapi i miss the human ellen ripley pasal Sigourney Weaver (i think she is the ONLY female actor yang berlakon citer action and dapat nomination best actress (for an action movie!) punya lakonan memang first class in what seem to be a brainless movie (although i dont think so if u look at all the directors of these alien series (off course minus alien Vs Predator)
