RATU were scheduled to sing 6 songs for the President of Indonesia last Friday night, alongside other stars such as Cici Paramida and Titiek Puspa who were only given 2 songs to sing each. RATU were given more songs because they're currently one of the biggest bands in Indonesia. Unfortunately RATU were sent off stage earlier than they had expected.
Speculations on why they were sent off earlier is still a mystery, but a spokesperson for the event said there were 3 things that RATU might have done to upset the audience :
1. RATU were dressed inappropriately for the occasion. RATU, who are well-known for their eccentric fashion sense came on stage looking like a couple of hookers in multi-coloured rags. They wore holey fish-net tights and mismatched coloured shirts and mini skirts. There were many of Indonesia's important people of the government in the audience including the president and vice president, and it just didn't seem right to see them dress and perform the way they did.
2. Mulan Kwok (vocalist of RATU) called out the wrong name for the President. She was supposed to pay respect and call out "Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono" (the name of the President of Indonesia), instead she said his name wrong and called out "Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono", which upset a lot of people because of the fact that she didn't even know her own president's name.
3. That's not all, when they were about to perform their 3rd song, one of Indonesia's previous presidents, Abdurahman Wahid who is also known as Gus Dur, entered the room. Abdurahman Wahid is known to be a close friend of Maia Ahmad (the other half of RATU) and her husband. Mulan shouted out "Welcome to Gus Dur!" spontaneously. "We all know that Ratu are a close friend of Abdurahman Wahid, and though he is known by friends as Gus Dur, that does not give Mulan the right to call him by his nickname at an event as important as this", says the event organizer-Max Sopacua.
Because of all the incidents above, as Mulan was ready to start the 3rd song, suddenly their microphones were unplugged. Maia looked backstage and their manager told them to get off the stage. Turns out the event organizer's had heard protests from the audience about how direspectful they were, and so they had to cut the performance short.
Maia only had one thing to say about this incident when we asked, "Not Now!", right before she went into her car and drove off. |
