A Raya reunion to remember

IPOH: It was a show-stealing Hari Raya at Kampung Seri Kepayang in Fair Park here, with five generations of the late Dukut Maharajo gathering to celebrate.

At least 800 family members, with some coming from as far as Sudan, Indonesia and Pakistan, got together for the ?eunion? on the first day of Raya.  

And the spotlight was on Mailan Abdul Manas Ahmad Dukut, who at 95, is the oldest living descendent of Dukut.  



Hundreds knelt before her wheelchair to kiss her hand and ask for forgiveness.  

The partially-blind great-great grandmother was overcome by emotion, saying: ? cannot describe how happy I am to see everyone in the family together again.

?y father would have been very proud,? said the last surviving member of Dukut's eight children.  

She had something to say about the family bond: ?amily means everything.?  

The clan began when Dukut migrated from his hometown in Sumatra to Chemor, Ipoh, as an 18-year-old in the late 1880s.  

He married Halijah Imam Awang, the daughter of Kelantan religious leader Imam Awang.  

Dukut died in the late 1940s but the extended family has never forgotten him.

In fact, an 18-member ?eunion committee? headed by former Ipoh city councillor Datuk Azumu Tak, has been organising family gatherings such as this since 1992.

Team leaders are appointed to collect funds for the reunion, with this year? event costing RM8,000.

Among the noticeable faces in the large crowd was Asyraaf Syahmie Hasri, the nine-year-old schoolboy, whose weight issues have been highlighted by the media.  

His father, Hasri Abdul Karim, 42, is one of Dukut? great-grandsons.
