Temple is second winner of prestigious award

PENANG can now boast of a second Unesco award-winning heritage site in the heart of George Town besides its famous blue mansion of Hakka tycoon Cheong Fatt Tze.

The latest winner, the Penang Teochew Association抯 Han Jiang Ancestral Temple on Chulia Street, is the epitome of Teochew architecture.

The 1870 temple is the only site in South-East Asia among the nine winners of the Unesco Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award 2006 announced recently.

Its successful haul of Unesco抯 Merit Award is recognition of the solidarity within the Teochew community for doing a good job in the RM1.5mil restoration.

The project involved not just physical restoration of the 136-year-old temple but also revival of the Teochew culture and most importantly, spirit of kinship.

When word got round that a major restoration was in the works, professionals from within the community comprising a conservation consultant, architect, civil and structural engineer, mechanical and electrical consultant, and quantity surveyor volunteered their services.

The temple抯 conservation committee chairman Datuk Khor Teng How said the project was entirely initiated and supported by the Teochew community.

揟he committee and ordinary members of the association, as well as other members of the Teochew community donated money and helped out just to revive the Teochew heritage and pass it on to the future generations.
