Indonesia's ailing Suharto still unstable - doctors

JAKARTA (Reuters) - The condition of ailing former IndonesianPresident Suharto, who ruled with an iron fist for more than threedecades, is still unstable with excess fluid in his lungs, a member ofhis medical team said on Thursday.

Suharto, 86, was admitted to Jakarta's Pertamina Hospital last weeksuffering from anaemia and low blood pressure due to heart, lung andkidney problems, and his condition has fluctuated since then.

"His physical condition is still unstable. He has difficultybreathing," said Mardjo Soebiandono, the head of the medical teamtreating the former general.

FormerIndonesian President Suharto is wheeled out from the radiology unit atJakarta's Pertamina hospital January 8, 2008.

"He is conscious. After receiving blood transfusion, his haemoglobinlevel has increased ... An X-ray of the lungs condition shows excessaccumulation of liquid."

Suharto was forced to quit in 1998 amid massive student protests, and though his political influence has faded since then, he and hisfamily still remain powerful.

Critics say he and his family amassed billions during his long rule, but the former president and members of his family deny any wrongdoing.

Attempts by subsequent governments to prosecute Suharto for graft have failed so far.
But some Indonesians still look back with nostalgia at the Suhartoera, when Indonesia was one of Asia's tiger economies, and refer to himfondly as the "Father of Development".

All six of Suharto's children, and almost all of his sons-in-law,daughters-in-law and grandchildren were with him at the hospital onTuesday, indicating the seriousness of his condition.

The former strongman, who rarely appears in public, has sufferedfrom various ailments in recent years, including intestinal bleedingand strokes.

Suharto was previously charged with graft but escaped prosecutionwhen he was deemed too ill to stand trial. He and his family are stillinvolved in a couple of high-profile court cases.

The sudden deterioration in his health over the weekend promptedsome senior politicians and one of Suharto's daughters to call forlegal proceedings against him to be dropped.

But the attorney-general said on Monday his office would press ahead with a civil case against Suharto.

Despite Suharto's humiliating ouster in 1998 and the subsequentattempts to prosecute him for corruption, members of Indonesia'spolitical and business elite have flocked to his bedside to pay their respects.

Gravely ill Suharto improves slightly: doctors

The health of Indonesia's ex-dictator Suharto improved Saturday, a dayafter he suffered multiple organ failure, as the government said itwanted to settle a graft case against him out of court.

The86-year-old former president, who stepped down a decade ago after 32years of often brutal rule in the world's fourth most populous nation, was admitted to hospital on January 4 with heart, kidney and lungproblems.

Hiscondition has since fluctuated before dramatically worsening on Fridayevening, when he was connected to a ventilator to stay alive.

ButMarjo Soebiandono, one of the doctors in the large team of expertsassembled to treat Suharto, said that as of 0200 GMT on Saturday, thepatient's general condition was "better" and he had regainedconsciousness.

"When I asked him whether it hurt, he shook hishead," he said, adding however that he showed signs of infection in hislungs and his haemoglobin levels were falling.

"The team ofdoctors will continue to make intensive efforts to improve his generalcondition by giving blood transfusions, medication for his lunginfection and balancing the liquids in his body," he told a briefing.

Meanwhilethe attorney general announced that the government wanted to settle apending civil corruption case against Suharto, who is accused ofmassive graft while in power, with his family out of court.

"Wehave offered a deal to Suharto's family... that the civil case will besettled out of the court," Attorney General Hendarman Supanji said, adding that the family, represented by eldest daughter Tutut, woulddecide as soon as possible.

He said he had been ordered byPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to make the approach. UnderIndonesian law, if a defendant dies during such a civil suit, his orher family must instead defend the case.

A criminal case againstSuharto was abandoned in 2006 due to his persistent poor health but thecivil suit, launched last year, was seeking 1.4 billion dollars indamages and returned stolen assets skimmed off the foundation.

Suharto's allies had called earlier in the week for the case to be abandoned but they were rebuffed by the attorney general.

Theformer strongman has been accused of being one of the 20th century'sworst kleptocrats but has rejected allegations that he and his familywere sitting on a fortune of between 15 and 35 billion dollars.

Investigationsinto several other charitable foundations that Suharto chaired havebeen ongoing. It was not clear whether these would continue.

Yudhoyono himself rushed back to the country on Saturday from Malaysia, where he cut short an official visit by several hours.

Thepresident was briefed at Halim airbase on his return by a member of theteam of doctors who treated Suharto, Christian Johannes, the Antarastate-run news agency reported.

"The president was concerned and continues to monitor Suharto's condition," Johannes said.

VicePresident Yusuf Kalla went to Suharto's side on Friday evening where hejoined the ex-strongman's six children and his extended family. InYudhoyono's absence, Kalla would have been authorised to announce hisdeath, according to protocol.

Suharto presided over massiveeconomic development in Indonesia, but his rule was marred by thecorruption allegations as well as rights abuses, particularly inregions where separatist sentiment ran high such as East Timor, Acehand Papua.

In Central Java's Solo, where Suharto's family graveslie, identification cards have reportedly been prepared for the mediato cover his eventual funeral.

"This is just in anticipation...because we see what conditions are like," said the district militarycommand's spokesman, Baso Syukri, according to online news portalDetikcom.

Metro TV showed footage of soldiers and workers scurrying to ready the area surrounding the grave.

Indonesia's Suharto ill, country prepares for his death
By Ahmad Pathoni

MATESEH, INDONESIA (Reuters) - As Indonesia's former President Suharto lay critically ill in hospital on Saturday, the military and police rushed to prepare the Suharto family's mausoleum in central Java for his burial.

The 86-year-old Suharto, who ruled Indonesia for more than three decades, suffered multiple organ failure on Friday and was put on a ventilator to help him breathe. On Saturday, doctors said his condition had improved and that he showed a response.

Jakarta in this March 28, 2000 file photo.

But at the Suharto family's mausoleum, 35 km northeast of the Javanese royal city of Solo, soldiers and military police guarded the complex as workmen unloaded tents and an excavator was brought in to prepare Suharto's grave.

Reporters in Solo were issued with press IDs saying "Press - Funeral of Grand General (Retired) H.M. Soeharto".

"We are anticipating all possibilities. It is part of the police job," said Dodi Sumantyawan, the central Java police chief, after surveying the Suharto family mausoleum.

The Giribangun mausoleum, a three-tiered building with wooden pillars and a stupa-like roof, is perched on a hilltop and surrounded by trees.

Suharto's wife Tien, who was a member of the Solo royal family, is buried there in a chamber with walls of intricately carved wood.

A few visitors stopped by at the mausoleum.

Sumiarsih, who travelled from the neighbouring district of Sragen with her son and husband to pay homage at Tien's grave, said she prayed for Suharto's recovery.

"He's done a great service to the nation and we hope he can be well again," she said.

GRAFT CASE

With the former strongman in a critical condition, the question of whether to continue legal proceedings against him for corruption is being vigorously debated by politicians and members of the public.

In an apparent attempt to defuse the debate and avoid openly criticising Suharto, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told a news conference on Saturday afternoon that this was not an appropriate time to discuss the legal case against Suharto.

"I'm still of the opinion that it's not right to talk about it given the current health condition of Pak Harto," the president said, referring to Suharto by his popular name.

"Pak Harto was a leader of this nation. His contributions to this nation are not small. As a human being, however, like other people, Pak Harto has weaknesses and mistakes."

Critics say Suharto and his family amassed as much as $45 billion in kickbacks or deals where political influence was a key to who won a contract, charges he and his family denied.

After he quit office, Suharto was charged with embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars of state funds, but the government later dropped the case due to his poor health.

Last year, state prosecutors filed a civil suit seeking a total of $440 million of state funds and a further $1 billion in damages for the alleged misuse of money held by one of Suharto's charitable foundations.

INDONESIA'S ELITE

The sudden deterioration in Suharto's health last weekend prompted some politicians to call for legal proceedings against him to be dropped.

However, the attorney-general, who visited the ailing Suharto and his family in hospital overnight, told reporters that the government would still seek an out-of-court settlement in a graft case against the former general.

"The President gave instructions to me to pursue the family of Suharto to finalise an out-of-court settlement of the civil case," Attorney-General Hendarman Supandji told reporters at the hospital.

Suharto was rushed to Pertamina hospital a week ago suffering from anaemia and low blood pressure due to heart, lung and kidney problems.

Family members gathered at the hospital as his health deteriorated during the week, while a "who's who" of Indonesian society, including relatives, various government ministers, businessmen, religious leaders, and military men, have flocked to his bedside to pay their respects.

Suharto came to power after an abortive coup on Sept. 30, 1965 that was officially blamed on the communist party. Up to 500,000 people were killed in an anti-communist purge in the months that followed.

Some Indonesians, though, look back with nostalgia to the Suharto era, when Indonesia was one of Asia's tiger economies, and refer to him fondly as the "Father of Development".

Paru-paru Suharto dijangkiti kuman

dah nak mati pun masih lagi mintak dikenakan tindakan; apa rasionalnya minta masa dia ni nazak; aku pun tak paham.

Suharto makin kritikal

LAWAT RAKAN: Bekas Perdana Menteri Singapura, Lee Kuan Yew meninggalkan hospital Pertamina, di Jakarta, semalam selepas menziarahi Suharto (gambar kecil).

Doktor sahkan hampir semua organ bekas presiden gagal berfungsi

"Beliau kini semakin kritikal," kata Marjo Subiandono, Ketua Pegawai Perubatan Presiden.

Beliau mengalami kegagalan organ dan diberikan alat bantuan pernafasan Jumaat lalu selepas doktor mengesan tanda awal paling bahaya iaitu jangkitan peparunya.

– AP
