high-end server tak perlu shutdown. bounce aje the box. kalau heavily use, once a month or two months, okaylah tu. kalau tak heavily use, once a year pun tak pe.
most important, mesti ada air-cond. temperature kena jaga (don't go over 75 degree fahrenheit). so, kena tau server btu as to how much power your air-cond has to have.

as i said earlier, it still needs to be shutdown for once in a while. I want to avoid him/her to have a thinking that a server doesn't need to be shutdown forever. and yes, ur rite, the temperature surrounding the server needs to taken care of. |

shutdown is not the same as bounce. bounce is reboot/restart. shutdown usually means you want the hardware to cool down. reboot/bounce, you just want to refresh the OS/apps. high end servers don't need to be shutdown. bounce is more than enough to refresh the OS.
we have servers here that we haven't shutdown for 3 years. don't have to so far. we bounce them may be twice a year.

i see, new things for me, though. thanks. Cz i've been thought shutdown for a while is better than jz restart. and u got ur point there, where big organizations can't afford to have downtime even for a while. since he's going to use it for personal use (i think), in ur opinion, if he's going for not so high-end server (which he should), should he just let it running 24/7 without shutting down? (taking account of power consumption) |

whether he should run the server 24/7 or not, really depend on what kind of server he wants to build. as far as power consumption, he can't get away with it. if he wanted a server that runs webhosting, email, data storage, etc., he needs to run it 24/7. otherwise, he won't use it that much (might as well get a desktop as that would be more than enough to serve any purpose).
