Victoria Institution

Victoria Institution (Malay: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Victoria) is a premier secondary school for boys (and girls for Form 6) and one of the oldest schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The school is widely known as V.I. and a student of Victoria Institution bears the name Victorian.

VI achieves well in academic fields and sports at secondary school level in Malaysia. It is considered one of the best non-residential schools in Malaysia.[citation needed] The school is named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, and was opened to commemorate her golden jubilee.

VI was named as one of the 'cluster school' of excellence by the Malaysian Ministry of Education, and will be given autonomy in administration and adequate funding to excel in specialised fields (academic, sports and extra-curricular activities) of choice.

History

In the 1880s, Raffles Institution in Singapore flourished as an outstanding school. Some prominent citizens, including the Kapitan Cina (Chinese Captain) of Kuala Lumpur, Yap Kwan Seng, Towkay Loke Yew, and Thamboosamy Pillay, saw the need for a good English school in Kuala Lumpur. With the support of British Resident at Selangor, Sir William Hood Treacher and donation from Sultan Abdul Samad, The Sultan of Selangor, they built the Victoria Institution in 1893. The name of the school commemorates the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

Victoria Institution gets back its name

KUALA LUMPUR: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Victoria, which now has national heritage status, reverts to its old name of Victoria Institution (VI) from Saturday as it is world renowned.

"The world already knows its name as Victoria Institution so it is my pleasure to announce that its name, beginning today, will remain as Victoria Institution," said Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal (left) with Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique are looking at the national heritage declaration scroll at Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur.

Speaking at a cermony Saturday to declare the school's national heritage status, Shafie said the school was chosen as it met the criteria of the National Heritage Act 2005.

Shafie, who is an alumnus of the school, said VI played a role in the country's history when it was used as the administrative headquarters by the invading Japanese army during the Second World War.

The school, he said, was also the first English secondary school in the country, was prestigious and had produced important personalities from Sultans, leaders, ministers, corporate figures, politicians to sports luminaries and professionals.

He said the school was the first in Southeast Asia to have cadet corps and a school band.

Shafie called for the school's heritage to be conserved as each characteristic "be it a wall, a window, balcony, roof, tower or its field has its own story."

Founded by Sultan Abdul Samad, William Hood Treacher, Loke Yew, Thamboosamy Pillai and Yap Kwan Seng on Aug 14, 1893, Victoria Institution has steadfastly maintained a record of academic excellence and produced many leaders and luminaries.

Those who passed through its hallowed halls include Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Cabinet ministers then and now like Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique, Datuk Seri Dr. Ng Yen Yen and former judge Datuk Mahadev Shankar.

Other former students include corporate giants like Tan Sri Shamsuddin Abdul Kadir, T. Ananda Krishnan and Tan Sri Francis Yeoh while in the field of sports the school has produced luminaries such as Datuk Dr. M. Jegathesan, the late Mokthar Dahari, Datuk Misbun Sidek, Foo Kok Keong, Datuk P.S. Nathan and Ishtiaq Mubarak.

Shafie said till today there were 172 items listed on the National Heritage List.

He said there were four sites in the country accorded 'World Heritage Site' status and several manuscripts were in the 'Memory Of The World' register.

"Such recognition surely adds value to our heritage and Malaysians should be proud that our heritage is shared with the world," Shafie said.

Meanwhile, VI ParentTeachers Association (PTA) chairman Raja Amir Shah Raja Abdul Aziz said now that the school had been bestowed national heritage status, with its illustrious name restored, a strategic plan needed to be formulated to chart the school's future direction.

"After the heritage do and getting back the VI name, all of us the PTA, old boys, the teachers and community should make VI the best in everything.

"We can have the Raffles Institution in Singapore as a benchmark," he said. - Bernama

Victoria Institution has one of the oldest prefectorial
board in Southeast Asia

School buildings

Victoria Institution has a majestic clocktower overlooking two sports pavilion and a vast field, surrounded by aged colonial-era trees (yellow flame trees and palms). The structures that make up the Institution itself are a heritage of the nation.

While the modern-day Ministry of Education has added many rectangular-shaped blocks to the Institution, the distinctive "E" shape of the main block is still one of the more interesting features of Kuala Lumpur.

However, the present day location of Victoria Institution on Petaling Hill (previously a Chinese cemetery area), is not the original site for VI. The original school building was located at Jalan Bandar, and was officially opened on the 30th of July 1894.

In March 1929 the school shifted its location to Jalan Hang Tuah, as the old location was frequently flooded by the nearby Klang River during heavy downpours. The old VI building was used as police station, art gallery, office block, theatre, until a fire in 1999 burnt down the historical building. The wall and the floor survived the fire and it was renovated and brought back to the glory days of the old VI building.Reference.

VI also has its own swimming pool and synthetic track for 100 metres sprint event, making it the only school in the region with these facilities.

The school song

The original 1949 version with words and punctuation by G. F. Jackson. The song is sung to the tune of 'Garudamas Igitur', one of the oldest students' songs (author unknown). The school song alludes to the free and easy student life of medieval times.

Let us now with thankfulness
Praise the founders of our School.
Let us now with thankfulness
Praise the founders of our School
For their foresight and devotion,
Some who came across the ocean,
Some Malaysia's own sons,
All true Victorians.

Let us next remember here
All who passed through this our School.
Let us next remember here
All who passed through this our School,
Not one race but one in feeling
For a school to each appealing
That instruction be not all
Nor this School just roof and wall.

Let us lastly pledge ourselves
Ever to uphold our School.
Let us lastly pledge ourselves
Ever to uphold our School.
In our work and in our leisure,
With such zeal and in such measure
That the new Victorians
Match with Old Victorians.

[edit] Lagu Sekolah
Words by Zainab bt Yusop

Sanjungan didendangkan
Pengasas nan budiman
Sanjungan didendangkan
Pengasas nan budiman
Kerana jasa khidmat mulia
Yang mengharung samuderaya
Dan putera Malaysia
Kekal cita Victoria

Kenangan dilayangkan
Pada semua lepasan
Kenangan dilayangkan
Pada semua lepasan
Lain bangsa satu cita
Diingatkan pada semua
Ilmu zahir utama
Rohani pun setara

Ikrar pula lafazkan
Junjung sekolah pujaan
Ikrar pula lafazkan
Junjung sekolah pujaan
Dalam usaha gerak laku
Warisan lama dan baru
Bergandingan, bersatu
Hidup Victoria diaju
