In the last five years, Chinahas been installing a Chinese designed Type 730 30mm CIWS (Close InWeapon System) on its destroyers and newest frigates, while planning anupdate that adds short range missiles.
Costingsome $5.4 million dollars per unit, and weighing eight tons, the sevenbarreled, 110 inch long, cannon resides in a box shaped turretproviding point defense against anti-ship missiles, aircraft, coastaltargets, small boats and mines. With a rate of fire of 4,200-5,800rounds per minute (rpm), the gun is fed from twin 500 round boxes andfires either High Explosive or Armor Piercing shells. By virtue of itscaliber, performanceexceeds that of the most famous CIWS, the U.S.20mm Vulcan ‘Phalanx’,but remains inferior to the Russian ‘Kashtan’ (Chestnut) twin 30mm CIWS.
Itselectronics consists of a small round radar extending from the left topof the turret for tracking and engagement as well as a color camera,heat seeking camera and laser range finder extending from the right topin a U shape mount, where a sensor filled ball rides in the center. Theradar’s range is 8 kilometers for small targets and 15 to 20 kilometersfor moderate to large targets. The Electro -Optical unit can track outto 6 kilometers. Once identified, the target is allowed to close to 3kilometers, whereby the gun engages. 1 to 1.5 kilometers is the mostopportune and accurate range, however.
Type730’s counterparts include theU.S 20mm ‘Phalanx’, a 1970s design that uses a 6 barreled, 73 inchlong, gun with radar (10 kilometer range) and electro optical sensor (5kilometer range) firing High Explosive and Armor Piercing shells at4,500 rpm out to a range of 2 kilometers. Cost of the system is $5.6million. Total systems weight is seven tons.
Russia’s‘Kashtan’ mounts twin 6 barreled, 110 inch long, 30mm guns using radar(20 kilometer range), and electro-optical sensing (6 kilometerrange),and fires High Explosive or Armor piercing projectiles out to adistance of 4 kilometers with a combined rate of fire of 10,000 rpm.Cost of the system is $7 million with a weight of 16 tons.

Phalanx is a point-defense, total-weapon system consisting of two 20mm gun mounts that provide a terminal defense against incoming air targets. CIWS, without assistance from other shipboard systems, will automatically engage incoming anti-ship missiles and high-speed, low-level aircraft that have penetrated the ship primary defense envelope. As a unitized system, CIWS automatically performs search, detecting, tracking, threat evaluation, firing, and kill assessments of targets while providing for manual override. Each gun mount houses a fire control assembly and a gun subsystem. The fire control assembly is composed of a search radar for surveillance and detection of hostile targets and a track radar for aiming the gun while tracking a target. The unique closed-loop fire control system that tracks both the incoming target and the stream of outgoing projectiles (by monitoring their incoming noise signature) gives CIWS the capability to correct its aim to hit fast-moving targets, including ASMs.
The gun subsystem employs a gatling gun consisting of a rotating cluster of six barrels. The gatling gun fires a 20mm subcaliber sabot projectile using a heavy-metal (either tungsten or depleted uranium) 15mm penetrator surrounded by a plastic sabot and a light-weight metal pusher. The gatling gun fires 20mm ammunition at either 3,000 or 4,500 rounds-per-minute with a burst length of continuous, 60, or 100 rounds.

On July 14, 2006, while enforcing a blockade off Beirut, the INS Hanit was attacked by Hezbollah, using an Iranian version of the Chinese C-802 missile. An explosion caused the landing pad to cave in and be engulfed in flames that threatened the aviation fuel storage below, and the flames were not fully extinguished until several hours later. The ship suffered some damage, but stayed afloat, got itself out of the line of fire, and made the rest of the journey back to Ashdod for repairs on its own.[1]. Four IDF personnel were killed.
An investigation into the incident by the Israeli Navy concluded that the missile was indeed a C-802 which hit a crane in the rear of the ship, that the ship's radar was not fully functional at the time, that both the ECM and the Barak anti-missile systems were in a two-minute stand-by mode and that the ship's captain was not aware of that fact.

WEAPON CONTROL SYSTEM - CLOSE IN WEAPON SYSTEM (WCS-CIWS)
DIGITAL INTERFACE
RMKS/1. THE PURPOSE OF THIS ADVISORY IS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION
CONCERNING A WCS/CIWS DIGITAL INTERFACE ISSUE. THIS ADVISORY
APPLIES TO DDG 51 - 53. DDG 54 AND FOLLOW WILL RECEIVE A CIWS
COMPUTER PROGRAM UPGRADE DURING CONSTRUCTION THAT RESOLVES THE
ISSUE DESCRIBED BELOW.
2. BACKGROUND. TESTING OF THE WCS/CIWS INTERFACE HAS REVEALED A
PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH A CIWS WEAPON CONTROL GROUP (WCG)
COMPUTER PROGRAM RELOAD, PERFORMED UNDER ONE OF THE FOLLOWING
CONDITIONS:
A. IF WCS IS ON-LINE AND EXECUTING AND THE CIWS COMPUTER
PROGRAM IS RELOADED WITH THE CIWS REMOTE CONTROL PANEL (RCP) SET
FOR REMOTE AEGIS DESIGNATIONS (AUTO DESIG ENABLE LIT WHITE AND
CIWS IN RCP CONTROL), CIWS WILL NOT COMMUNICATE WITH WCS.
B. IF WCS IS BROUGHT ON-LINE FOLLOWING CIWS PROGRAM RELOAD
WITH THE CIWS RCP SET FOR REMOTE AEGIS DESIGNATIONS, CIWS WILL
REPORT "STANDBY" MODE TO WCS EVEN THOUGH THE ACTUAL MODE IS "AIR
READY" OR HIGHER.
C. IN BOTH OF THE ABOVE SITUATIONS, THE WCS COMPUTER WILL HOLD
A CIWS STATUS OF NON-TACTICAL AND UNAVAILABLE. IN THIS CASE, WCS
CANNOT DESIGNATE A TARGET TO CIWS UNLESS BATTLESHORT IS ENABLED
AT THE COMPUTER PROGRAM INTERFACE SUPERVISION (CPIS) SUBMODE.
THE RCP WILL SHOW CIWS ALIGNED TO ACCEPT WCS DESIGNATIONS, BUT
THE MSS AND AAWC CROS WILL INDICATE CIWS IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR
DESIGNATION. THIS PROBLEM WILL BE CORRECTED BY INSTALLATION OF
THE CIWS USN 1005 (BLOCK 1 BASELINE 0 DASH 5) COMPUTER PROGRAM
SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE IN APR 94. THIS PROGRAM INCORPORATES LOGIC
WHICH CAUSES THE RCP TO INITIATE VALID COMMUNICATIONS WHEN THE
CIWS COMPUTER IS RELOADED. AEGIS INTEGRATION IN B/L 4.2.7 (DDG
51 AND 52) AND B/L 5.0 (DDG 53) IS SCHEDULED FOR AUG AND OCT 94
RESPECTIVELY.
3. ACTION. PRIOR TO RECEIPT OF THE NEW CIWS COMPUTER PROGRAM,
PERFORM THE FOLLOWING:
A. IF THE CIWS COMPUTER IS RELOADED WHILE CIWS IS SET FOR
AUTO DESIGNATION, PLACE THE RCP "RCP/LCP" KEY SWITCH IN THE "LCP"
POSITION. FOLLOWING THE COMPLETION OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAM
RELOAD, WHEN THE SYSTEM IS IN "AIR READY" MODE, PLACE THE KEY IN
THE "RCP" POSITION. THIS ESTABLISHES WCS/CIWS INTERFACE
COMMUNICATIONS.
B. IF THE WCS COMPUTER IS BROUGHT ON-LINE FOLLOWING A CIWS
COMPUTER PROGRAM RELOAD, PLACE THE RCP "RCP/LCP" KEY SWITCH IN
THE "LCP" POSITION. WHEN WCS IS ON-LINE AND EXECUTING, PLACE THE
KEY IN THE "RCP" POSITION. THIS ESTABLISHES WCS/CIWS INTERFACE
COMMUNICATIONS. |
