£20,000 reward on offer for information on unsolved murder case

By Peter Sherlock

DETECTIVES are offering a £20,000 reward for information on the murder of an elderly spinster in her Stamford Hill almost a year ago.

The body of Eveline Kelmenson was discovered bound to a chair with duct tape at her home in Leweston Place on New Year's Day. Her house had been ransacked and valuables stolen.

Her body may have lain undiscovered on the top floor of the three-storey house for up to six weeks. A postmortem revealed she had died of hypothermia.

Cops are re-issuing an appeal for information on the anniversary of her death and have released further details about valuables taken from the three-storey house she had lived in for most of her life.

The intruders took a gold chain Miss Kelmenson used to wear around her neck and a plain gold wedding band made with Russian gold at the turn of the century, belonging to her grandmother.

Det Chief Insp Stewart Hill said: "We are still very keen to identify any new witnesses or information which may progress our investigation further and hope the offer of this substantial reward will help.

"In particular, we would like to hear from anyone who has information on Lina's last movements. Did she have any concerns she may have confided to friends?

"We also need to trace anyone who was a regular visitor to Lina's home before her death. Was there anyone suspicious hanging around the area towards the end of November, 2008, or in the weeks after?"

Miss Kelmenson, who was known as Lina, had been targeted by criminals.

Two years before her death, thieves posing as workmen conned their way into her home and stole cash.

In the weeks before her death, she had repeatedly told neighbours people were after her for her money.

Miss Kelmenson, whose Hebrew name was Chava, had never married and lived alone following the death of her sister in 2007.

Anyone who can assist should call the incident room on 020 8345 3715, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

l Four men in their 30s were arrested in connection with the inquiry last April and released without charge.
