Tasmanian MP labels Thatcher a ' war criminal '

A Tasmanian Government minister is standing by his comments labelling former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher a " war criminal " .
After the ' Iron Lady ' died earlier this week in Britain, aged 87, state Workplace Relations Minister David O'Byrne expressed his views on her legacy via Twitter.
He referred to Thatcher as a war criminal and said her death should not erase her deeds or policies.
Opposition Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Julie Bishop says the remarks are tasteless.
" He should apologise to the family. It's hard to believe people can be so insensitive and so ungracious when talking about the former leader of one of our great allies, the United Kingdom, " she said.
Liberal Senator Eric Abetz has also condemned the comments.
" These comments ... are an embarrassment to himself, an embarrassment to the Labor Party but most importantly an embarrassment to the people of Tasmania," he said.
" Premier (Lara) Giddings should be intervening, calling on him to apologise. "
In a statement this morning, Mr O'Byrne said he was entitled to debate his view on personal forums like Twitter.
A Tasmanian Government spokesman said Mr O'Byrne would not be disciplined for his comments.
More than 300 Argentine sailors and soldiers died when a British submarine sank the General Belgrano in 1982 during the Falklands War.
Thatcher was the prime minister at the time and there was debate about the legality of, and motives for, the sinking.
Carr labelled a coward
Meanwhile, Ms Bishop has also rounded on Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr, accusing him of launching a "cowardly attack" on Thatcher.
Speaking to Lateline a day after her death, Senator Carr said he once had a conversation with Thatcher in which she warned that Australia should clamp down on Asian migration.
He described the comment as an "unabashedly racist remark" and said it was made while his Malaysian-born wife was in the room.
But Ms Bishop has accused Senator Carr of showing a complete lack of sensitivity, and has called on him to immediately apologise to the Thatcher family.
" For him to make such a graceless cowardly attack on a former British PM, less than 24 hours after her death, shows the kind of man he is, " she said.
" Not a shred of decency. There can be no excuse for this. He should apologise. "
Thatcher died on Monday morning (UK time) at the age of 87 and will be accorded a ceremonial funeral at London's St Paul's Cathedral next week.
