Brunei In Brief

In the northwest corner of the island of Borneo, along the shores of the South China Sea lies the sultanate of Brunei Darussalam. With a total land area of 5,765 square kilometers, Brunei is divided into four districts namely Brunei朚uara, Tutong, Belait and Temburong.

Bandar Seri Begawan, the country抯 capital is located in the Brunei-Muara District. About 70% of Brunei抯 land area is covered by unspoiled rainforest, home to many varieties of flora and fauna endemic only to island of Borneo.  A great portion of the country抯 dense rainforest is situated in and around Temburong district.

Brunei抯 population is mainly composed of Malays with a mixture of Chinese and Indian communities.  Expatriates and a few indigenous groups comprise a minority of the population.  Bahasa Melayu is the official language but English is widely spoken and understood by the greater part of Brunei抯 population.

The country is ruled according to established Islamic values and tradition by the present monarch, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzadin Waddaulah.  Brunei's form of government is called a Malay Islamic Monarchy and one of the oldest in the region with over 600 years of recorded history.  Brunei enjoys warm, equatorial climate year-round with minor seasonal variations. Situated off the typhoon and earthquake 'belts' Brunei nevertheless receives high levels of rainfall and humidity.

Today, Brunei Darussalam is actively involved in international, regional and sub-regional core groups such as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec), ASEAN and BIMP-EAGA and rapidly emerging as an active player in the region's affairs. The strong and stable support of His Majesty's government contribute to the growing interest in Brunei both as a developing economy and a haven of eco-tourism.

TEMPAT LAWA DI BRUNEI

Kampong Ayer
Kampong Ayer Stretching for several miles along the banks of the Brunei River, Kampong Ayer, Brunei's famed water village, is a fascinating glimpse into Brunei's past.

Built entirely of stilt houses and wooden walkways, this cluster of 42 villages housing more than 30,000 inhabitants is the world's largest water village. Some people refer to it as the 'Venice of the East'.

Kampong Ayer retains much of the historical features of the 16th century when Ferdinand Magellan's chronicler first discovered it.

The traditional lifestyle of its inhabitants-fishermen, river traders (or padian as they are called in the Malay language) and artisans making and selling traditional handicrafts (silverware, brassware, woodcarving and cloth weaving) - has remained unchanged since then.

Today Kampong Ayer is an almost self-sufficient community being equipped with modern facilities such as schools, shops, markets, mosques, clinics, police stations and fire brigades. All are connected by a maze of stilted platforms and walkways.

Kampong Ayer is a national heritage and efforts are being made to preserve this lifestyle so that the legacy of the 'water' people of Brunei will be retained, not only as a tourist attraction, but also for the future generation of Brunei.

Visitors can have a personal experience of this heritage by taking one of the many water taxis that ply daily between the water taxi jetty in front of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in the centre of town and the water village itself.

Brunei Darussalam's richly endowed cultural heritage has been steadfastly maintained until today. The setting up of the Arts and Handicraft Centre in 1975 is a living testimony of the preservation and proliferation of the arts and crafts of the bygone days which Brunei was renowned for; such as boat making, silver-smiting, bronze tooling, cloth weaving as well as mat and basket weaving.
Relics and other various artistic heritage of Brunei Darussalam, The Brunei Museum at besides the ones mentioned above, include Malay weaponry, wood carvings, traditional games, traditional musical instruments, 'silat' (the traditional art of self defence) and decorative items for women.

Some of these are kept in the Brunei Museum and the Malay Technology Museum; not only for the world to see but also for today's generation to admire and be proud of.

These artefacts are also for future generations to emulate perhaps, and to remind us of our forefather's natural skills, creativity and innovativeness which over generations has been said to be one of the richest traditional cultures in the Malay world.

Batu Apoi Forest Reserve & the Ulu Temburong National Park

The Batu Apoi Forest Reserve is an endless spread of thick virgin jungle and inside lies 50,000 hectares of parkland that has seen very little human impact.

Called the Ulu Temburong National Park, this tract features steep, swampy terrain and thick impenetrable jungle land. Because there are no roads that lead here, the only access is only by boat or' temuai'.

A trail from the forest takes visitors to the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre, a research facility set up for the study of the abundant ecological treasures found in these parts. However, charting the difficult terrain to get there requires the help of a guide.

This forest features a seven-kilometre walkway, tree houses about 30 meters high and hanging bridges intended for nature 66 observation of the surrounding mountains and the river and forest below.

The Kuala Belalong Mini Park

Situated at the Temburong Civic Centre Padang, this park which was opened in 1993, has a waterfall, a pond, a landscaped garden and huts similar to those in Kuala Belalong.

However, these are not used for accommodation but for exhibiting pictures of His Majesty's Temburong visits and findings made at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre.
