Born in a quaint and little known town of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah state of Malaysia. Her most cherished hobby there was karaoke. Her father, a civil engineer and architect, loved the classic pop balladeers of the Sixties, and her mother brought home every kind of rhythmic dance music, singing her daughter to sleep with her favorite new R&B and reggae songs.
At the age of ten though, Che'Nelle and her parents moved to the relatively vibrant city of Perth, Western Australia. It was nothing like she was used to, especially as it was faster, and most of the people didn't look like her. Again though, she gravitated towards the karaoke scene. Karaoke was very much a safe haven, an umbrella under which she came into her own; where she could sing and hone her craft; where there were no boundaries.[1]
As every child does, CHE'NELLE charmed her parents with her singing, but she also amused and astonished her father in his karaoke lounge when she ignored the flashing lyrics to improvise her own, and invented her own words so that she could sing him songs she'd heard just that day in a video.[2]
At 14 she joined a Top 40 cover band and did it for 5 years.[3] Going to college to learn how to produce梬ith Logic Pro and Pro Tools梬as Che扤elle抯 next big step toward stardom.[4] Che'nelle studied music at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
Finishing her degree in music, she signed to a music publishing company as a staff songwriter. One of the songs she co-wrote 'Hell, No!' was chosen as the debut single of Ricki-Lee Coulter, a finalist in the second season of the Australian Idol competition, and it scored CHE'NELLE her first national top 5 hit as a songwriter, with an impressive 21-week run in the Australian top 100 chart and a gold single certification.[5]
While still working on her self-produced demo in her excruciatingly modest bedroom studio, Che'Nelle uploaded her recordings on to her now renowned myspace page. Amidst the countless hits of her page, her now manager - radio veteran and club DJ of 17 years - Sir Charles Dixon, stumbled on what was too good to be true.
Dixon took her material to Virgin Records and flew Che'nelle to Los Angeles at the end of 2005 to meet with the label. The chairman of the label and longtime music business baron, Jason Flom, refrained from much a rhetoric dance and committed to signing her immediately. Within two days, she had signed the deal and was marketed as a world artist.
Che'nelle worked as a promotions assistant before moving to New York in January after signing a six-album deal with Virgin Records America, the same label that houses Lenny Kravitz and Ben Harper. In Australia, she is represented by EMI. She also shares the same management team as Kanye West, performing as the opening act on his Australian tour in March 2006.
Che'nelle collaborated with UK based music producer Manon Dave (aka Schizo) on a track for her forthcoming album. The two had also been collaborating on a number of projects prior to Che'nelle's deal with Virgin Records.
Her song, "Teach Me How To Dance" was featured in the movie Take the Lead.
She also completed a cover remix of the Mims Song This Is Why I'm Hot
Her debut album "Things Happen For A Reason" was release on the 25th of September in Japan with a release date scheduled for 29th of October in Australia.
The first single off of her debut album was "I Fell In Love With The DJ" featuring reggae artist Cham.It is number 67 in Australia.
