Red Ribbon Programme Receives Support From Local Celebrities
KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 (Bernama) -- The Red Ribbon Celebrity Programme organised by the Malaysian Aids Council is set to be a star-studded event with the likes of Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Faizal Tahir and Fahrin Ahmad doing their bit to change the public's prejudice towards people with HIV/Aids, as well as educating them on the disease.
The council's executive committee member, Dr Soraya Azmi said, the programme was launched as there existed a stigma and discrimination againt those with HIV.
"Prejudice and discrimination will isolate them from society," she said at the programme's launching, Tuesday.
Other celebrities who lend their support to the programme are Umie Aida, Ayu, Dayang Nurfaezah, Shah Shamsiri, Zainal Alam Kadir, Owen Yap, Fish Leong, Aanantha and Uthayaa.
"We are confident that their talent, popularity and concern will help the council and the Malaysian Aids Foundation send the message across to the community," said a member of the foundation's board of trustees, Datuk Maznah Abdul Jalil, who was also present at the launching ceremony.
About 85,000 people have been identified to be HIV positive while between 10 and 15 people are infected by the virus each day in the country.
