Telekom Malaysia ™ has offered two voluntary separation schemes to its non-executive staff aged 50 and above in what is said to be a move to trim its workforce.

According to its 2022 annual report, the company has a total of 19,499 employees. An estimated 52% of them are in the non-executive category while the rest are executives. It is understood that it is targeting to let go of at least 500 employees.

According to offer documents sighted by FMT, the two schemes are called Mesra, for those aged 55 to 58, and Voluntary Separation Plan (VSP), for those aged 50 to 54.

Under Mesra, the telecommunications giant, which enjoyed a revenue of RM12.1 billion last year, is offering an amount equivalent to half a month’s last drawn basic salary for the remaining months of service before retirement.

In addition, they will be entitled to medical benefits for just one year with a maximum of RM15,000 for inpatient care, and RM4,000 for outpatient treatment, which includes expenses for dental and optical care, and medical examination.

As for the VSP, TM is offering one-and-a-half month’s basic salary for each year served but capped at a maximum of 36 months’ wages. This group will not enjoy any medical benefit.

Sources said that TM has not got the desired response yet, adding that applications will close on July 31.

National Union of Telecommunication Employees (NUTE) president Jafar Abd Majid, who confirmed the exercise, said the union is okay with it as long as it remains voluntary.

“We never made any request for the scheme but we support it as some members had requested for it. We have also advised members to check with their families first before making any decision.

“Members can inform the union if they are harassed by their supervisors to accept the scheme. We will object to any move by the management to retrench the staff if the response is poor,” he told FMT.
