Di sini Danghyang Nirartha pernah menginap satu malam dalam perjalanannya menuju daerah Badung dan kemudian ditempat inilah oleh orang-orang yang pernah menghadap kepadaDanghyang Nirartha dibangun bangunan suci (Pura atau Kahyangan) sebagai tempat memuliakan dan memuja Sanghyang Widhi Wasa (Tuhan Yang Maha Esa ) untuk memohon kemakmuran dan kesejahteraan.
Pura atau Kahyangan ini diberi nama “Pura Pekendungan” yang sekarang lebih dikenal dengan “ Pura Tanah Lot” sebagai salah satu penyungsungan jagat,. Sekarang Pura atau Kahyangan ini sangat terkenal diseluruh Nusantara, malahan tidak mustahil diseluruh dunia, karena merupakan salah satu obyek wisata di pulau Bali yang sering memperoleh kunjungan. . Mereka yang berkunjung ke Pura atau Kahyanagn ini bukan saja wisatawan domestik, akan tetapi tidak jang juga wisatawan dari Luar Negeri.

Bagaimana ikwal perjalanan Danghyang Nirartha tatkala berkeliling di Pulau Bali dan sampai ditempat ini, dapat dijumpai didalam Dwijendra Tatwa yang menguraikan dan dapat disarikan sebagai berikut : Pada suatu waktu Danghyang Niratha datang kembali ke Pura Rambut Siwi di dalam perjalanan beliau kelilling pulau Bali, dimana dahulu tatkala beliau baru tiba di Bali dari Brambangan (Blambangan) pada sekitar tahun icaka 1411 atau tahun 1489 M beliau pernah singgah di tempat ini. Setelah berada di Pura Rambut Siwi untuk beberapa lama, kemudian beliau melanjutkan perjalanannya menunju arah Purwa (Timur) dan sebelum berangkat paginya Danghyang Niratha melakukan sembahyang “Surya Cewana” bersama orang-orang yang ada disana. Sesudah menyiratkan (memercikkan )tirtha terhadap orang orang yang ikut melakukan persembahyangan , lalu Danghyang Nirartha kelaur daridalam Pura Rambut Siwi berjalan menuju arah ke Timur. Perjalanan beliau ini menyusuri pantai Selatan pulau Bali dengan diiring oleh beberapa orang yang teraut cinta bhaktinya kepada Danghyang Nirartha.
Dalam perjalannya ini Danghyang Nirartha dapat menyaksikan bagaimana deburan ombak laut menerpa pantai menambah keindahan alam yang sangat mengasyikkan. Terbayang oleh beliau bagaimana kebesaran Sanghyang Widhi Wasa (Tuhan Yang Maha Esa ) yang telah menciptakan alam semesta dengan segala isinya yang dapat membrikan kehidupan bagi manusia. Dalam hati beliau Dangyang Nirartha membisikkan bahwa menjadi bahwa menjadi kewajiban setiap makluk di dunia ini terutama manusia untuk menyampaikan parama sukmaning idep terhadap sanghyang Wudhi Wasa ( Tuhan Yang Maha Esa ) karena beliau telah berkenan menciptakan segalanya itu. Karena asyik memperhatikan dan memandang keindahan alam dengan segala isinya, sampai –sampai Dangyang Nirartha tidak merasakan kelelahan didalam perjalanan beliau ini.
Sebagaimana biasanya di dalam perjalanan Danghyang Nirartha senantiasa membawa lontar dan pengrupak (pisau raut untuk menulis pada daun lontar ) sehingga apa-apa yang diangap penting baik yang dilihat maupun yang dirasakan kemudian disusun dalam bentuk kekawin atau gubahan lainnya. Demikian pula mengenai perjalanannya dari Pura Rambut Siwi ini, sehingga karena asyiknya beliau memperhatikan serta memandang dan memikirkan segala sesuatu yang dipandang penting dan akan digubah, tahu-tahu Danghyang Niratha sudah sampai pada suatu tempat di pantai Selatan dipantai Selatan pulau Bali. Di pantai ini terdapat sebuah pulau kecil yang terdiri dari tanah parangan ( tanah keras) dan disinilah Danghyang Nirartha berhennti dan beristirahat.
Tidak antara lama Dangyang Nirartha beristirahat disana,maka berdatanganlah kesana para nelayan untuk menghadap kepada Danghyang Nirartha sambil membawa berbagai persembahan untuk diaturkan kepada beliau. Kemudian setelah sore hari, paranelayan tersebut memohon kepada Danghyang Nirartha agar beliau berkenan bermalam dipondok mereka masing- masing, namun permohonannya ini semua ditolak oleh Danghyang Nirartha, karena beliau lebih senang bermalam di pulau kecil itu. Disamping hawanya segar, juga pemandangannya sangat indah dan dari sana belaiu dapat melepaskan pandangan secara bebas kesemua arah.
Pada malam harinya sebelum Danghyang Nirartha beristirahat, beliau memberikan ajaran-ajaran seperti agama,susila da ajaran kebajikan lainnya kepada orang-orang yang datang menghadap ke sana.. Tatkala itu Danghyang Nirartha menasehatkan kepada orang-orang itu untuk membangun Parhyangan ( Pura atau Kahyangan ) disana karena menurut getaran bhatin beliau yang suci serta petunjuk gaib bahwa tempat itu baik untuk tempat memuja Sanghyang Widhi Wasa (Tuhan Yang maha Esa ) . dari tempat ini kemudian rakyat dapat memuja kebesaran sanghyang Widhi Wasa ( Tuhan YangMaha Esa ) untuk memohon wara nugrahaNya keselamatan dan kesejahteraan dunia.
Demikian antara lain nasehat Danghyang Nirartha kepada orang-orang yang mengahadap pada malam hari itu, yang akhirnya sesudah Danghyang Nirartha meninggalkan tenpat itu, kemudian oleh orang-orang tersebut dibangunlah sebiuah bangunan suci ( Pura atau Kahyangan ) yang diberi nama “Pura Pakendungan “ yang kini lebih dikenal dengan sebutan “Pura Tanah Lot “.
PURA Tanah Lot merupakan salah satu objek wisata terbaik di Bali. Pura Tanah Lot memiliki keunikan karena berdiri di pinggir laut. Beberapa mitos dan pantangan diyakini masyarakat sekitar seputar tempat peribadatan ini.
Salah satu pantangan adalah jangan membawa kekasih Anda ke Pura Tanah Lot. Tidak jelas bagaimana asal-muasal mitos ini menyebar. Namun bagi masyarakat Bali, pantangan ini diyakini dengan teguh.
Masyarakat Bali percaya dengan mitos bahwa jika datang ke Pura Tanah Lot bersama pacar, maka hubungan diyakini tak akan bertahan lama. Wanita yang sedang hamil dan sedang haid juga dilarang naik ke Pura Tanah Lot. Wanita yang sedang haid dianggap sedang kotor sehingga dilarang melakukan ritual keagamaan. Menurut cerita, pernah ada seorang wanita yang sedang haid hendak berjalan di jembatang penghubung tebing menuju Pura Tanah Lot. Namun, tiba-tiba saja jembatan roboh. Sementara, di seberang Pura Tanah Lot terdapat gua tempat mendekamnya ular yang sangat disucikan masyarakat Bali. Ular ini sangat besar dan berdiam diri di sebuah lubang yang ada di gua. Para wisatawan pun bisa melihat langsung atau memegang langsung ular ini.
Untuk memegang ular ini, para wisatawan dikenai biaya sukarela untuk perawatan. Masyarakat Bali juga percaya, ular suci ini sering berpindah-pindah ke pura yang ada di seberangnya. Biasanya, ular suci pergi ke Pura Tanah Lot di malam hari untuk menjaga pura.
Tidak sembarang orang bisa naik ke atas Pura Tanah Lot. Hanya pada ritual-ritual tertentu orang boleh naik ke pura. Kalaupun tidak ada ritual atau upacara, harus naik atas seizin pemangku adat.
