Gilligan’s Island

In 1992, the governor of Hawaii received a 30,000 signature petition to change Maui's name to “Gilligan's Island”.
This was the result of “Operation Desert Isle” a plan put together by a fan club of the television show Gilligan’s Island. Of course, the change was never made, the governor said “no” and, reportedly, one of his secretaries burst out laughing when the request came in.

FANS ASK HAWAII TO GIVE MAUI NEW NAME - GILLIGAN'S ISLAND
Published: Thursday, Feb. 27 1992 12:00 a.m. MST
File this one in the "only in Southern California" folder.
The Gilligan's Island Fan Club, based in Studio City, is petitioning Hawaii Gov. John D. Waihee to rename the island of Maui to Gilligan's Island as a tribute to the 1960s sitcom about seven castaways who were stranded on an uncharted island after leaving Honolulu."'Gilligan's Island' is not just a TV show, it's American folklore," said fan club leader Bob Hines. "It's worthy of an enduring honorarium."
Hines, a computer programmer who moonlights as a Gilligan groupie, estimated his club's "Operation Desert Isle" campaign will bring about 30,000 signatures for the cause.
"The show affected the collective conscience of a generation," Hines said. "It deserves to be immortalized."
Folks in the governor's office in Honolulu don't think so.
One secretary burst out laughing when she heard the news. Another wondered aloud about the type of people in Hollywood.
Carolyn Tanaka, Waihee's press secretary, said the Gilligan's Island Fan Club doesn't stand a chance with their plan.
"Their chances are zero to below zero," she said.
