It is a mysterious vault that many of us would wonder, what does a woman carry in her handbag? Pic: Shutterstock
Women and handbags seem to be inseparable. Ask a woman whether she loves bags or not and I bet you will never hear a ‘No’ for an answer. Handbag fashion and style differs between a mother and a single lady. Yet, there are certain things that are common and it is not necessary for every woman to carry the same kind of stuff in their bags. It is a mysterious vault that many of us would wonder, what does a woman carry in her handbag? An example, my mother, she would carry all sorts of things inside her bag. In addition to essential items such as cash and make-up kits, you can find hairbrushes, medicine, a shawl, a recycle bag, munchies and even some tamarind sweets too! That’s not all! Since she is quite tech savvy, you can bet on a mobile phone, an i-Pad as well as power banks inside this ‘personal vault’. On the other hand, there is always something useful in there, not just for her, but for everyone else too. “A woman is defined by her bag, and as such, a glimpse into their handbag is a glimpse into their personal life,” said Dr Mariani. What’s the deal with a handbag?
“Women are more complex than men, however at times it is vice versa,” said Associate Professor Dr. Mariani Md Nor, a psychologist from the University of Malaya (UM). “Some women carry handbags as a need while some to flaunt fashion trends. Nowadays, women are sometimes prepared to spend more on handbags than on a holiday or even on other important assets,” said Dr Mariani. The history of handbags relates to why handbags are so important to woman. Going back two centuries ago, a woman’s role largely lied on domestic surroundings. As such, she would keep her belongings in a bag, as it was a useful way to carry specific needs when they were off for work and leisure.
Peeking through a private life? Fondly known as woman’s most private possession, most women would feel violated when someone else looked or peeked into their bag. “From money, mobile phones, tampons, make-ups, keys and even laptops, these are often seen as private and as survival kits for daily use,” she said. “The contents in a handbag and the internal organization of the bag could also reflect a women’s way of life. Personal secrets such as their way of life, attitude and personality may be revealed when somebody peeked into their bag,” she explained. Dr. Mariani added that besides handbags, purses are also another useful accessory for women. Whether it is as a utility or as a status symbol, it is essential to the modern woman. The contents may decipher a woman’s personality and the systematic life that may reflect their capabilities in managing their daily tasks. “A woman is defined by her bag, and as such, a glimpse into their handbag is a glimpse into their personal life,” said Dr Mariani.
What’s in a supermom’s handbag?
Gadgets, make-ups, baby wipes and diapers are among the things that you can find in Daphne Iking's handbag. Pic: mD
Television personality and mother-of-two, Daphne Iking, 35, shares that she is a ‘big bag’ kind of girl who is always on the run. “Apart from the essentials, I have my iPad and a notebook in my bag. Yes, you’d think I would list my ‘to-do-list’ on my savvy gadget, but I prefer writing them down – I’m still old-fashioned in that sense,” said the Bella nTV7 host. One rare thing that can be found in her bag is a measuring tape... as Daphne enjoys sewing and it’s no surprise that she will soon launch her very own fashion line tagged DW by Daphne Iking, apart from running a production business with her husband and manager, Azmi Abdul Rahman. However, one things for sure for this busy mom, always to have baby wipes and a hand sanitizer when she attends to her two little girls, Isobel Daniella, 6, and Iman Daniella, 2. Even her kiddos are following their mom’s footsteps by having their own handbags! “They would take them everywhere they go, but at the end I would be the one to carry their bags during playtime or when they are too tired to carry it themselves!” smiled Daphne. “There was a time when I forgot my babie’s diapers, so there was once during a client presentation, diapers flew out while I took out my laptop! Luckily the client was also a mother,” chuckled Daphne. Being a woman means having lots of handbags, but for Daphne, she can use the same handbag for more than a month. “My husband would nag for using the same handbag, but he changes his ‘manbag’ more than I do. He loves his bags more than he’d like to admit!” “Bags are an accessory too, so it should complement the clothes that you’re wearing. At the least, don’t bring it when you at a red carpet event!” said Daphne with a smirk.

Founder of fashion brands, ShoesShoesShoes and KLutched, Ung Yiu Lin, 34, is definitely another big bag kind of a girl. “My day usually stretches from day to night, so I need to fit in everything that I can imagine. As I am constantly on the go, my two iPhones are definitely the most important thing in my bag!” One thing that people might find odd in Yiu Lin’s handbag is a pair of flat shoe. “I know it’s weird but its practical, so I always keep a pair of flats whenever possible. A pair of flats is a great idea when you are jetting from one place to another. “Sometimes I forget to have lunch, so having chocolate bars in my bag really helps me to keep my energy up!” said Yiu Lin. Apart from keeping a pair of shoes in her handbag, Yiu Lin always carries her chequebook wherever she goes. “The weirdest comment I ever got was when someone saw me carrying a chequebook in my bag, apparently people don't use cheque books these days, but being a businesswoman, it’s a must!” laughed Yiu Lin. Being a new mom to her 5-month-old daughter, Zara Aliya, Yiu Lin said she would keep her accessories or jewelleries in her handbag when she was carrying her baby and the one thing a mother always needs... anti-bacterial wipes. This self-driven designer will soon be introducing a line of baby shoes named Bambini, that comes along with matching shoes for the mother. As a shoes and handbags designer, Yiu Lin thinks that one does not need to carry too many items that will stuff the bag and cited that her KLutched Ceylon clutch bag is a useful day to night item. “Being an oversized clutch, its size perfectly fits about anything and obviously is an attention grabber too. “At times, I would switch to my KLutched To Keo satchel as I designed it to be well compartmentalized for the working women. It has all sorts of compartments to keep your purse, notebook, make-up and many other items,” as Yiu Lin shares her ideal kind of bag.
Simplicity is simply the best

Hanis Zalikha, 24, a blogger and TV host, had her mom’s GUESS handbag as her first handbag. “For me the size of the handbag does not matter as I am a very minimalist girl. I only carry a few items such as my make-up, sunglasses and most importantly my ID card and cash!” shared Hanis. Citing the Prada Saffiano Lux Tote as her favourite bag among her collection, Hanis is definitely into leather bags and brand status does not matter. As for now, Hanis carries her woven bag on her daily schedule. “I got it for RM30 from Jonker Street and I wear it all the time. I think women should bring things that they need when it comes to the contents in their handbag,” said the actress, who currently can be seen in season 2 of ‘Jodoh’ on Astro Ria. Hanis said that the contents in a bag should be things of need and thinks that an overweight bag will make you slouch. “If you want your bag to look stylish, always carry it yourself instead by someone else,” shared the 'Raikan Cinta' host. When asked what unusual things can be found in her handbag, Hanis simply replied: “Food! There is always food in my bag. No matter what!” You would think that every woman carries useless things inside their bag but again, a woman knows what is needed to care for her and her surroundings. A woman’s bag may be a bag full of surprises, but if you acknowledge what’s inside it, you will agree that every item has its usefulness. Everything has got to be inside her bag or else she just can’t live without it.
