WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Air Force F-22 fighter, designed to be the world's top air-superiority aircraft, crashed Wednesday near Edwards Air Force Base, California, while on a test mission, an Air Force official said.
The Lockheed Martin Corp -built F-22 went down about 10 a.m. Central Time about 35 miles northeast of Edwards, where it had been based, said Maj. Michelle Coghill, a spokeswoman for the Air Combat Command.
"It was a test mission," she said, citing preliminary information. She said the condition of the lone pilot was not immediately known. An investigation would take place, Coghill said.

LOS ANGELES, March 25 (Xinhua) -- A Lockheed Martin test pilot was killed when his F-22 fighter jet crashed Wednesday on a flight near Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California. The 49-years-old David Cooley was a 21-year Air Force veteran, Lockheed Martin said in a statement. The accident occurred at 10 a.m. local time in Kern County, about 50 kilometers northeast of the base, according to Kristina Constant of Edwards Air Force Base. Constant said an investigation into the cause of the crash was under way.Edwards Air Force Base, about 150 kilometers north of Los Angeles, is designated as the flight test center for the U.S. Air Force. It is also home to a NASA flight research center. It is reported that almost every U.S. military aircraft since the 1950s has been at least partially tested at the base. The F-22 fighter, which uses stealth technology, is considered a major component of the U.S. military's air strike force.
