Bayern Munich beats Wuppertal 5-2 in German Cup, Werder loses in Dortmund
FRANKFURT, Germany - Miroslav Klose scored two goals as Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich beat Division Three Wuppertal 5-2 for a place in the German Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday while Borussia Dortmund eliminated Werder Bremen 2-1.
Diego converted a penalty in the 82nd minute for Bremen, which trails Bayern in the Bundesliga on goal difference, but wasted another two minutes later and squandered an opportunity to tie the game.
In other games, Division Two Hoffenheim upset Hansa Rostock 2-1, while 1860 Munich overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Alemania Aachen 3-2.
Wuppertal twice tied it in the first half but second-half goals from Daniel van Buyten, Luca Toni and Hamit Altintop secured Bayern's victory.
Klose scored in the 14th and 27th minutes but Wuppertal tied it each time.
Tobias Damm in the 26th and Mahir Saglik in the 29th scored for Wuppertal.
"After 2-2, we thought it couldn't be true," Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness said. "Then the coach said a few words in the locker room and it went better."
Dortmund, in 10th place in the Bundesliga, led in the 19th minute when Giovanni Federico collected a pass from Mladen Petric and scored into the far corner.
Diego Klimowicz doubled Dortmund's lead in the 80th, off a pass from Sebastian Kehl that beat the offside trap.
But Kehl sent the game into a dramatic finish when he brought down Markus Rosenberg to create the first penalty.
Diego, who came off the bench in the second half, beat Dortmund goalkeeper Mark Ziegler with a shot to the goalkeeper's right side.
Two minutes later, Rosenberg earned another penalty when he was pulled down by Martin Amedick.
Diego took the shot again and drove the ball to Ziegler's left, but Dortmund's goalkeeper read the effort and stopped the ball. |
