Widespread showers with gusty winds expected in 2nd half of May
SINGAPORE can expect widespread showers with gusty winds to occur on two to three days in the second half of May.
This will take place in the pre-dawn hours and morning, said the Meteorological Services Division in a statement.
Short-duration afternoon showers with thunder are also likely.
But the MetService expects a few hot days early in the period, easing to wetter and cooler conditions during the last week of the month.
About two-thirds of Singapore experienced above average rainfall during the first 2 weeks of May.
The highest rainfall of 115 mm to 130 mm was recorded in the Kranji area. |

Temperatures rising - least till next week
By Tania Tan and Tessa Wong
TEMPERATURES here hit a scorching 34 deg C on Tuesday, and the heat is not likely to let up until well into next week, when light winds may provide some relief.
The mercury peaked at about 3pm, the second time this month temperatures have hit that high, and just 0.1 degrees Celcius shy of the 34.1 deg C recorded in the first week of the month.
While the National Environment Agency (NEA) could not give details, checks on international weather websites, including the United Nations World Meteorological Organisation, confirmed that temperatures hit 34 deg C on Tuesday.
According to the US-based Weather Underground, May has also been the hottest month so far this year for Singapore, with an average temperature of 31 deg C.
May is traditionally the second hottest month of the year, with average temperatures usually falling between 24.7 and 31.6 deg C.
A few more hot days, with intermittent showers, are expected until the final week of May, NEA stated in its fortnightly forecast.
Whether this month will set a new record for the highest extreme monthly temperature ever remains to be seen. That record was set in May 2005, when temperatures hit 35.4 deg C.
But even without setting records, the current heat has sent thermostat settings down, and while takings for many alfresco businesses have not gone down, complaints have been streaming in. |

Haze expected to hit harder and faster this year
By Tania Tan
THE haze could hit harder and sooner than expected - it is only a matter of when. All it will take for the acrid pall to blow towards Singapore, is a change in wind direction - unless bushfires burning there are quelled soon.
The National Environment Agency's (NEA) forecast said that south-westerly winds could blow smoke haze from Sumatran fires here within the next two weeks. Light, variable winds may or may not work in our favour, said Associate Professor Matthias Roth from the National University of Singapore's geography department. 'It's unpredictable.'
In any case, south-westerly winds are expected to strengthen during the June-September monsoon season, added Prof Roth - bringing the acrid pall back over Singapore. But one thing is for sure - slash and burning in Indonesia has started.
Hundreds of hotspots have appeared over the past few days, reported the Indonesian meteorological service. Over 850 hotspots were counted last week(May 12-18), up from just 130 the week before (May 5-11), said the NEA.
Singapore experienced its worst haze crisis in over a decade in 2006, when the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit an unhealthy 150. And signs could be pointing to a repeat of that year. Only time will tell. Said Mr Kwoh, 'Watch out for the next two months.' |
