COROLLA ALTIS BARU DAH TIBA
Oleh
Jaz Al-Zain
Kedua-dua harga termasuk COE.
Bagaimana dengan anda, tidak teringin ke memilikinya? |

SUBARUS have never been pretty, and the latest Impreza range is no exception. The styling is innocuous and curious - too long to be a hot hatch and too short to be a wagon.
But what it lacks in the looks department, the car makes up for in performance. Sticking to its age-old recipe of 'Boxer' engine, all-wheel-drive and a well-sorted chassis, Subaru has made the new Impreza brilliant enough to lift the darkest, dankest day.
And that's exactly what it does at a miserably rained-out test-drive event this week.
On a 4km route set in a disused military camp, the new Impreza impresses with the way it tackles the chicanes, attacks a slalom and sidesteps orange cones in an emergency lane-change manoeuvre.
The topography of the circuit, with its share of entertaining sweepers and tight bends, allows the more muscular cars to exploit their power bands.
These would be the 230bhp WRX manual and 250bhp S-GT automatic. The entry-level 1.5-litre manual huffs and puffs valiantly along. While it often lacks the punch needed to pull itself cleanly out of a curve without you having to shift down (to first gear at times), it is no less balanced than its bigger brothers.
It has a nice rorty undertone to its otherwise quiet demeanour. In fact, all the cars are pretty well insulated this way - a trait that sets it apart from the current model.
The downpour provides an excellent stage for the Subarus to show off their all-wheel tenacity. Sure, the wet tyres feel a little removed from the bitumen but the cars never misbehave, even when driven with a relish reserved for a traffic-less environment such as this.
Of the three, the S-GT - a new Japanese domestic variant - impresses most. Its autotrans has a quick-shift mode, but you can flick it over to Sport and pretty much leave it to its own devices.
This way, it almost matches the stick-shift WRX, making up what it loses in precise shifts with the complete control of two hands never leaving the steering wheel.
In any case, the Impreza's manual transmission is a bit of a chore. It is notchy and, at times, a bit vague. Definitely not the sharp magnetic slotting action you expect nowadays.
Thankfully, both the S-GT and WRX have buckets full of torque to get you by even if you loathe frequent shifts.
The cars handle neutrally and the ride is excellent, given the amount of swerving and braking they encounter. Even in the rear seats, the movements do not elicit a rising of stomach contents.
The steering is light but sharp, although the car seems to require a fistful of twirling to get round the slalom swiftly.
The new Impreza is, at the moment, available only as a five-door. It is slightly shorter and lighter than the outgoing sedan, and has a longer wheelbase. The WRX does not have more power per se, but peak performance is attainable at lower revs.
Personally, I would have preferred the brakes to have more heft for track use.
In the real world, the new Impreza will please with its updated and solidly-built cabin. The car no longer feels like a throwback to the 1980s, and the doors don't feel hollow anymore.
All is rather good, except for its looks. And its one-sided reverse lamp doesn't help.
Then again, that's something folks on your tail will have to deal with. And there will be plenty of those. |

PENJAMIN DIMINTA BAYAR BAKI HUTANG PEMILIK KERETA
KES 1

COE bids for this year's quota surge
By Christopher Tan, Senior Correspondent
WITH the exception of motorcycle certificates, COE premiums ended higher on Wednesday in the last tender exercise of the current quota year.
Commercial vehicle COE posted the strongest increase, rising by 8 per cent to close at a six-year high of $17,610 - driven by strong demand for construction vehicles.
Major infrastructural projects to be completed over the next few years include two casinos, two MRT lines, the Kallang Sports Hub and the Youth Olympic Village. Not to mention scores of condominium projects.
Premiums for cars rose across the board, ahead of an 8.5 per cent shrinkage in COE supply from next month.
COE for cars up to 1,600cc, such as the newly-launched Toyota Altis, climbed 7.2 per cent to end at a four-month high of $15,389. COE for cars above 1,600cc, such as the BMW 320i, rose by 5.6 per cent to end at a six-month high of $19,001.
The Open COE, used mainly for cars, moved one per cent higher to close at $18,854, a six-month high.
Motorbike COE ended 6 per cent lower at $901.
Motor traders expect premiums to breach $20,000 in the coming months on the back of a 7.5 per cent reduction in COE numbers. |

Car sales expected to dip as buyers look at alternatives
By Wong Mun Wai, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 20 March 2008 0010 hrs
SINGAPORE: The price of petrol has increased by eight times since last July, and car dealers said buyers will look at alternatives to avoid paying for the high fuel prices.
While the price of petrol has gone up, the US dollar is down to a record low.
Associate Professor Tilak Abeysinghe from the National University of Singapore's Department of Economics said: "Demand for cars is likely to go down because... the overall cost has gone up. Now the increase in oil prices is simply adding to that overall cost, so it (the demand) is likely to go down."
Car dealers also predicted that buyers' habits will change.
Ron Ng, a salesman at BenchMark Motoring, said: "People may switch to... CNG cars, hybrid cars, smaller CC cars or even cheaper cars, or they will switch to buying used cars."
Dealers added that Japanese cars are now more expensive as well.
When the US dollar fell, the yen gained strength, so Japanese cars are now about three per cent more expensive.
In the latest COE (Certificate of Entitlement) bidding exercise, prices for all vehicle categories are up, except for motorcycles.
COE price for big cars saw an increase of S$1,001 to S$19,001 while price for small cars went up S$1,038 to S$15,389.
In the open category, COE price rose S$184 to S$18,854. Commercial vehicles' COE price also climbed S$1,300 to S$17,610.
COE price for motorcycles went down S$58 to S$901. - CNA/ac |

LTA may give cash rebates to persuade more to switch to public transport
By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 30 March 2008 1638 hrs
SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is considering giving cash instead of credits when one gives up his or her car to persuade more people to opt for public transport.
Transport Minister Raymond Lim said he has asked LTA to work with the Finance Ministry to see if Certificate of Entitlement (COE) and Additional Registration Fee (ARF) rebates can be given in cash when motorists decide to give up their cars.
This study should take about four to six months.
A whole slew of measures was announced from late January on improving bus and rail services to get more people to use public transport. A more extensive ERP system was also set up as part of the deal to keep traffic smooth.
But what kind of push do people actually need to give up their cars?
One idea that has been tossed about and was recently brought up by MP Inderjit Singh during the Budget debate is to give cash incentives.
The current situation is that when a motorist gives up his or her car, ARF and COE rebates are given in terms of credits. In order not to lose out, motorists usually end up using these credits to purchase another car.
Many people have given the feedback that if these rebates are given to them in cash, it would be more of an incentive for them not to buy another car.
But by that same token, motorists could |

LATIO CECAH JUALAN 1 JUTA DI SELURUH DUNIA
Oleh
Jaz Al-Zain
