Bayern Munich G Oliver Kahn plays farewell match, settles for 1-1 draw
MUNICH, Germany - Oliver Kahn played his last match on Tuesday and had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the goal for Bayern Munich against the German national team.
Kahn retired from the national team after the 2006 World Cup. He was demoted to reserve goalkeeper by then Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann and played only in the match for third place, in which Germany beat Portugal 3-1. Klinsmann is now the coach of Bayern.
The Bayern Munich goalkeeper retired from club football at the end of last season, having helped Bayern win the Bundesliga title and the German Cup.
Kahn left the game after 75 minutes to the tune of "Time to Say Goodbye" before the sellout crowd of 69,000 at Allianz Arena.
Piotr Trochowski scored for Germany in the 33rd and Miroslav Klose tied the score for Bayern in the 51st. |

DfB To Bierhoff And Ballack: Cut It Out
German Football Federation president Theo Zwanziger has called on Michael Ballack and Oliver Bierhoff to end their feud for the national team's sake.
The bad blood between the captain and team manger boiled over on the weekend with them both exchanging jabs at each other through the press.
The two have been at odds since the aftermath of the Euro 2008 final in Vienna earlier this summer, when they were caught on camera arguing with each other after Ballack refused to hold up a thank-you banner for the fans, later declaring it "tacky".
Now, the DfB president has said 'enough is enough' suggesting they are jeopardising the group harmony ahead of an important qualifier in Finland on Wednesday.
"The coach must be able to concentrate fully on preparing the team for Wednesday's difficult task," Zwanziger told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur.
"It is up to Ballack and Bierhoff to "come together themselves.
"There are always differences of opinion, even among ourselves in the presidium. But things like this have to be dealt with internally and not kept running in the media." he concluded.

Player Ratings: Finland 3-3 Germany
Germany:
Robert Enke: 7.5 – After being given few opportunities in Liechtenstein, Enke was able to show his prowess. His positioning was superb, and he made several difficult saves. If not for Enke’s strong play, Germany would have lost today.
Philipp Lahm: 5.5 – His offensive performance was good, but he was slow to react on the defensive end. Made two huge errors in the opening minutes and never recovered his form.
Heiko Westermann: 3.5 – Needs to work on his communication and understanding with Tasci and Lahm. Often looked confused.
Serdar Tasci: 3.5 – Needs to work on his communication and understanding with Westermann and Fritz. Looked clueless on several occasions.
Clemens Fritz: 4.0 – Was effective on his occasional forays forward, but made critical errors on the defensive end.
Piotr Trochowski: 5.0– Not nearly as good as his performance against Liechtenstein; he had a few great chances but failed to convert. Summed up his performance well when he found the ball motionless in the left side of the penalty area and sailed a first-touch shot high and wide of the far post.
Thomas Hitzlsperger: 6.0 – Was somewhat effective at the offensive end, but his distribution was substandard. His rating would have been 5.0 if not for his well-taken corner kicks.
Simon Rolfes: 6.5 – Along with Schweinsteiger, Rolfes was the best German midfielder. Did well to control the flow of play, and nearly scored early following a ball from Podolski.
Bastian Schweinsteiger: 7.5 – Had a great touch on the ball tonight; his ability to hold possession and distribute the ball was on par with today’s great centre midfielders. Was rarely a threat at the offensive end, but ran the German offense throughout the second half.
Lukas Podolski: 2.0 – Was generally nonexistent. When he did touch the ball, it was often far outside the penalty area. There’s something seriously wrong when Podolski plays a full 90 minutes and takes no shots from inside the penalty area, instead opting to send long balls forward to defensive midfielders Rolfes and Hitzlsperger.
Miroslav Klose: 8.5 – Would have had a 9.0 had he converted on a free header he had in the 30’. Klose finally recalled his claim to fame; his first goal came following a diagonal run that he chested onto his foot. His hard work finally paid off with a well-deserved hat trick.
Substitutes:
Mario Gomez: 2.5 – One day, he’ll regain the form he had before the Euro tournament. Until then, we’ll have to watch this phenomenal talent miss tap-ins like his effort on 78’, which ended up with Gomez—and not the ball—in the goal.
Finland:
Jussi Jaaskelainen: 5.0 – Had several situations similar to Enke’s, but failed to deal with his trials as well as the German did. Had he done better to hold onto the ball, his team would have won.
Petri Pasanen: 6.0 – Was unfortunate to have kept the ball in the penalty area in the event that resulted in Klose’s third, but was a great contributor to a Finnish defense that did well to repel the German onslaught for the final half hour.
Sami Hyypia: 6.5 – If not for his occasional poor positioning, he would have earned a 7.0 Was generally solid on defense and did well to deny the German onslaught, even as his opponents included four natural strikers.
Veli Lampi: 7.0 – Like Hyypia, did very well against what became four opposing strikers. His positioning was better, however, hence the higher mark. Also, his tackling was spot-on; his tackle on Trochowski on 72’ was world-class.
Toni Kallio: 7.0 – Did well to contain the German left-sided attacking machine of Lahm, Trochowski and Podolski. As a result, the Germans spent much of the second half attacking on the other side.
Joonas Kolkka: 3.5 – A so-so first half performance preceded a poor second half showing. Played very little role in his team’s success.
Mika Vayrynen: 8.5 – Scored and provided an assist against a well-reputed German defense. Was everywhere he needed to be, as exemplified by the nature of his goal; following a cross, he faced in front of Westermann and volleyed past Enke.
Markus Heikkinen: 6.5 – Did well in defense, denying the Germans of opportunities in the center of the pitch. Deserves as much praise as his side’s defenders.
Roman Eremenko: 5.5 – Provided a good assist for the opener, but was otherwise a disappointment. Was involved in his side’s offensive play in the first half, but dropped back and was insignificant for much of the second period.
Jonatan Johansson: 6.5 – His unassisted goal on 33’ was impressive, and his work rate exemplary. While all eyes were on Forssell to provide Finland’s offensive inspiration, Johansson did well to make his impact early on.
Mikael Forssell: n/a – Yet another disappointment in his injury-riddled career, Forssell left after 41 just minutes with what appeared to be a calf injury. During his time on the pitch, he was generally unable to contribute.
Substitutes:
Daniel Sjoelund: 8.5 – Provided a goal and an assist, the latter coming just two minutes after his arrival on the pitch. Along with Vayrynen, Sjoelund was his team’s best player. He was a strong presence in midfield, but was able to shift to the offensive end with deadly effect.
Njazi Kuqi: n/a – Had 15 minutes to make his mark, but was anonymous on the pitch. |
