Man City v Sporting preview
Wednesday 14th March 2012 11:26
Team news for Thursday night's Europa League clash between Manchester City and Sporting Lisbon at the Etihad Stadium (kick-off 8.05pm).
City are likely to be without midfielder Gareth Barry for the second leg of the last-16 tie, with the visitors carrying a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Portugal.
The England international has been troubled by a back problem and is set to be rested by manager Roberto Mancini.
He would join defenders Vincent Kompany (calf) and Pablo Zabaleta (hamstring) on the sidelines but Joleon Lescott (groin) has a chance of making the bench.
Striker Carlos Tevez is not registered to play in the competition.
Man City (from): Hart, Pantilimon, Richards, Lescott, Savic, K Toure, Clichy, Kolarov, Milner, Pizarro, Johnson, Nasri, Silva, De Jong, Y Toure, Dzeko, Aguero, Balotelli. |

De Jong - We're City stickers
Midfielder says team will continue to fight until the end of the season
Nigel de Jong: Says Manchester City can overturn Sporting's 1-0 lead in the Europa League
Nigel de Jong has played down Manchester City's recent wobble and insists they have got what it takes to bag some silverware this season.
Roberto Mancini's men will have to overcome a 1-0 defeat to Sporting if they are to reach the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday.
The game comes on the back of a 1-0 loss at Swansea that cost City their place at the top of the Premier League to bitter city rivals United.
But the experienced Holland international has called for cool heads if they are to follow up last season's FA Cup win with a league or European trophy.
De Jong said: "We've come this far and now we've got to concentrate and fight to the end.
"It takes a lot of strength and power, but we have got a big enough and good enough squad for that. Every game now is a cup final, and it's the same for United.
"I don't think there is much advantage in being one point, two points in front now, it doesn't make much difference. We need to focus, and at the end we will see who is crowned champions.
Strong
"We knew they (Lisbon) would come out strong - every opponent comes out strong against us in the first 30 minutes now.
"They did a good job, and that's why they deserved their 1-0 win. But you have two games to get into the next round. If we want to go through, we need to win - it's that simple, and we're confident we can do that.
"But our main goal is the Premier League, that doesn't change. But we're still in the Europa League and for us, the only way we can succeed this season is to win one of the prizes.
"After we won the FA Cup, everybody is hungry for more. That's how it has to be at this club, and we will be very disappointed if at the end of the day we have no trophies." |

Tevez could return for City against Chelsea
ESPN staff
March 14, 2012
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has revealed that Carlos Tevez could return to first-team action against Chelsea next week.
Tevez has not played a competitive game for the club since refusing to warm-up as a substitute in September's Champions League group stage clash against Bayern Munich, eventually returning to Argentina for a number of weeks as his relationship with the City hierarchy soured.
An apology from the player last month finally paved the way for a return to Mancini's squad, however, and the Italian now believes Tevez could be involved in the Premier League game against the Blues on March 21 as he increases his workload in training.
"We will see in the next week whether Carlo will be okay," Mancini said, when asked if Tevez could face the Blues. "Probably [he will be]. But it depends on a lot of things."
First of all, however, City face Sporting in the second leg of their Europa League tie on Thursday. Tevez is ineligible, while Mancini revealed that Gareth Barry, Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta will also be unavailable due to injury.
Joleon Lescott could be called upon, however, after he recovered from a groin injury. City are reeling after losing top spot in the Premier League following last weekend's defeat to Swansea - following a first leg loss to Sporting in Portugal - but Mancini is refusing to panic.
"In Portugal and against Swansea we didn't play a very good game," Mancini said. "We didn't play like the usual Manchester City. We probably didn't deserve to lose both games but we need to play better.
"Now is a time to be strong and keep going because we are a top team and have time to recover.
"We are very disappointed for our supporters after Swansea because I saw on the TV one of our supporters cry. We want to win also for this guy and the other supporters.
"We are positive. We think we will win the Premier League and the Europa League. If we think a different way it will be a mistake." |

Mancini facing Man City revolt over tough training
Submitted by tribalfootball.com on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 11:20
Manchester City players are furious with manager Roberto Mancini.
His relationship with some key dressing-room figures had deteriorated even before Sunday’s defeat at Swansea, which saw Manchester City replaced by Manchester United at the top of the Premier League.
"Mancini is believed to have angered his misfiring squad by staying in Portugal following their Europa League defeat to Sporting Lisbon on Thursday. "
Instead of returning home immediately after the game, as is often the case, Mancini’s men stayed on in Portugal until Saturday and trained in the sweltering heat.
“This was a watershed moment in terms of the squad’s feelings towards the manager,” a source told the Daily Star and also claimed that Mancini’s only true allies appear to be David Pizarro, Mario Balotelli and his Italian-speaking backroom staff.
“Some of the players are unhappy. They believe the title will be retained by United as long as Mancini is in charge here.
“Everyone is desperate to win it, even though that would probably result in Mancini keeping his job.
“But the players are exhausted and could not believe the decision to keep them in Portugal until Saturday afternoon.
“It was so hot over there and the extra training sessions were, in their eyes, totally uncalled for.” |

Manchester City crash out of Europa League
(AFP) – 12 minutes ago
MANCHESTER — Manchester City were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday, losing on the aways goal rule to Sporting Lisbon.
City came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 on the night, with the last-16 tie ending 3-3 on aggregate.
City had lost the first leg 1-0 in Portugal and Sporting went 2-0 ahead on the night with Matias Fernandez and Ricky van Wolfswinkel both on target before the interval for a 3-0 overall lead.
Roberto Mancini's side roared back in the second half as Sergio Aguero (2) and Mario Balotelli, from the penalty spot, gave hope of completing a dramatic recovery.
But they were unable to find another goal as Sporting held on and City joined neighbours Manchester United in exiting the tournament. |
