lagi pasal garlic vine:
Garlic vine, a dazzling ornamental vine with garlic-like smell, is a native of Amazon Rainforest. Scientifically known as Pseudocalyma alliaceum, it is a member of Bignoniaceae flowering plant family. The plant is a decorative evergreen vine, 6-8 feet tall, with opposite leaves divided into two ovate leaflets. The vine bears clusters of funnel shaped, purple to pale lavender to white flowers which become lighter as they age. Garlic vine is one of the most rewarding flowering climbers to be grown in a garden. Interestingly enough, it smells like garlic when leaves or flowers are crushed. Usually flowering twice a year, the vine will have some flowers on and off throughout the year. Full bloom with large number of floral bunches, is by November-December.
This garden plant requires well-drained soil with moderate watering. The vine grows well in full sun to half shade conditions. Rooted stem cuttings are usually used for propagation. One has to train the vine to grow along the fence, trellis or an arbour. Plant has to be trimmed hard after it has finished the season's flowering.
Garlic vine in Spanish is `ajos sacha' which means `false garlic'. Plant contains several of the main sulphur compounds like alliin and allyl sulphides that garlic has, which are responsible for the odour and taste.
In Amazon basin, leaves are used as a condiment or as a spice for its garlic - like flavour and odour. It is claimed that the plant helps get rid of snakes and other reptiles from house premises.
Garlic vine has a long history of use in herbal medical systems in Peru and Brazil as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic. Indian tribes in Amazon basin use the poultice of bark on bumps, swellings and inflammatory conditions of the skin. An infusion or leaves in decoction is used for rheumatism, arthritis, uterine disorders and epilepsy. Leaves are also used as a common remedy for cold, flu, pneumonia, coughs, fever and headache.
