MICHAEL BALLACK believes Liverpool not Manchester United are Chelsea抯 main title rivals.
The outspoken Germany star also claims the players are firmly behind manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.
His rating of Rafa Benitez抯 men adds further spice to today抯 Old Trafford showdown.
Liverpool抯 steely approach has won many admirers at Stamford Bridge, including Ballack, 32.
He said: 揂 few weeks ago I was sure United were our strongest opponents.
揃ut now I think Liverpool are a major threat.
揟hey have shown in the past few games that they have the character to deal with being top of the league.
揟hey struggled in one or two games but even then we couldn抰 get back on top.
揟hey deserve to be first and the teams behind have to wait for them to drop points or for teams in and around them to play each other. But they have shown they can handle pressure. |

Why Rafa Benitez should be admired for standing up to Alex Ferguson
Rafa Benitez looked pretty much the same as he leaned against a wallin a corridor after the game at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday night.
Nice suit, blue shirt, small silver Liver Bird pinned to his buttonhole, neatly trimmed goatee, smile almost always on his lips.
Buthe didn't sound the same. Something's happened to the guy. Notsomething bad, necessarily. But something's changed nonetheless.
It's like he's auditioning for a re-run of that silly John Travolta movie, Face Off, where two guys swap face transplants.
Itwas still Rafa's face talking in Stoke but it was Jose Mourinho's voicesaying it was time Sir Alex Ferguson shut his big mouth.
That's the real reason why what Benitez first said on Friday has caused such a stir: because it was so out of character.
MostBenitez press conferences are platitudinous studies in politeobfuscation, careful exercises in not causing offense or makingheadlines.
Then suddenly New Rafa turned up last Friday, insulting Ferguson as surely as if he had slapped him in the face with a glove.
OnSaturday, he kept up the attack. In fact, he warmed to his theme. Hewanted to stop Ferguson talking about Liverpool, he said. "He has beentalking too much for a long time," he said.
He called Ferguson'Mr Ferguson', by the way. Never 'Sir Alex'. Maybe he's not just notbothered about convention. Or maybe he thinks that might show too muchrespect.
Anyway, it was all getting a bit Tony Soprano. Jovialon the outside but plenty of menace under the surface. We had to lookdown at his hands to check if he was wearing knuckledusters.
In style and tone, it was similar to Mourinho's notorious attack onArsene Wenger three years ago when the then Chelsea boss upbraide**enal's manager for much the same thing.
"I think he is oneof these people who is a voyeur," Mourinho said in 2005. "He likes towatch other people. There are some guys who, when they are home, have abig telescope to see what happens in other families. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea."
Okay, so Benitez's attack on Fergusonwasn't quite that personal but it wasn't far off. It certainly seemedto reveal a long-standing dislike of the man and a deep-seatedsuspicion of his working practices.
Benitez is far from alonein harboring those sentiments. Indeed, he claimed on Saturday that hisstaff at Anfield had been inundated with messages of support since hisoutburst.
The crucial thing is what it all tells us about theLiverpool manager's state of mind and how he is dealing with thepressure of his leading the Premier League.
Some have chosento interpret his new line of attack as a sign that he is cracking uplike Kevin Keegan did but Benitez is a harder man than Keegan couldever be.
The opposite is more likely: Benitez has been filledwith a new confidence this season. He believes Liverpool's time hascome and that part of the title battle is playing Ferguson at his owngame by putting pressure on the officials who referee United matches.
WhenKeegan lost it in front of the Sky cameras, Newcastle were falling likea stone. He said what he said from a position of weakness.
Thesituation with Benitez is different. Notwithstanding the draw at Stoke, the Liverpool boss is still speaking from a position of strength.
His team is standing up to United and Benitez has decided it is time he did the same.

Liverpool & Manchester United At War Over Fluminense's Ânderson
The Sun reports that both Liverpool and Manchester United are hot on the heels of Ânderson Luis de Azevedo Rodrigues Marques, the Fluminense defender.
It is thought Anfield boss Rafael Benitez had been tracking the 21-year-old for quite some time before sending his scouts to Brazil late last year to gather a reading on his progress.
But now Sir Alex Ferguson seems to have taken a fancy to the Fluzão stopper, a situation that will do nothing to improve the two managers' already icy relationship.
Liverpool reportedly want Ânderson as a buffer in case Daniel Agger pulls out of contract negotiations and asks to be sold to AC Milan, who recently had a bid for the Dane rejected.
United, on the other hand, are simply keen to unearth another exciting South American prospect to join the Da Silva twins in the Red Devils' rearguard.
Ânderson has just six months remaining on his contract at the Laranjeiras, and it could take as little as ?3.5 million to snap him up this winter.
