Arsenal 2-0 Middlesborough

Cesc Fabregas scored two as Arsenal eased to a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough to leave the Teessiders in trouble.

The Gunners captain has had a turbulent season after missing large periods through injury and then being hit with a misconduct charge earlier this week for allegedly spitting following the FA Cup tie with Hull.

But he at least proved he is back to his best at The Emirates on Sunday when he scored after 26 and 67 minutes to strengthen Arsenal's grip on fourth place in the Premier League.

The Gunners made a lively start with Fabregas' slide-rule pass picking out Theo Walcott, but Robert Huth was back quickly to clear the danger. Man-of-the-moment Andrey Arshavin then saw a shot blocked by an alert Boro defence.

But the deadlock was broken after 26 minutes when a slick move saw the Russian break free on the left and his cut-back picked out Fabregas to blast only his second goal of the season past Brad Jones. The goal, however, was tinged with an element of controversy as an offside-looking Nicklas Bendtner appeared to obstruct the view of Jones.

The Gunners continued to force the play with Walcott drilling a cross-cum-shot wide, while Boro offered very little in the attacking third until Stewart Downing's fierce drive forced Manuel Almunia into a smart low save two minutes before the interval.

Boro had a great chance to level the game five minutes into the second half when Downing's magnificent cross-field pass played in Jeremie Aliadiere, but he failed to beat Almunia in a one-on-one with the Spaniard.

And Boro were almost made to pay when Walcott forced Jones into a smart low save, while another Boro attack saw Marlon King fire into Almunia's arms.

But on 67 minutes Fabregas doubled Arsenal's lead when he latched onto Kolo Toure's fine throughball and rounded Jones before slotting home from the edge of the area in one swift movement.

Jones then made a smart low save to deny Samir Nasri. Further chances came and went for Bendtner, Emmanuel Adebayor and Abou Diaby but there was no further goals as Arsenal sealed a comfortable win that leaves Middlesbrough three points from safety in 18th place.

Arsenal can ruin Manchester United's Champions League dream, says Robert Pires



Robert Pires believes Arsenal can end Manchester United's dreams of retaining the Champions League.

The French World Cup winner and former Arsenal star has played against both teams during Villarreal's run to the quarter-finals.

He said: "Arsenal are my team. I am a supporter so I want them to win. But I also genuinely believe they are capable of reaching Rome."

"We played Manchester United in the group stage. Both games ended 0-0 and neither was a great match.
