Manchester City vs Chelsea Player Ratings
Chelsea managed to get ahead through a goal by Gary Cahill in the second half but they were stunned by a spirited Manchester City fightback in the final half-hour.
Chelsea were often busy in their own half and were unable to threaten City keeper Joe Hart's goal often. Their opening goal came against the run of play as a quick Chelsea attack, after sustaining over 15 minutes of constant City pressure at the start of the second half, led to a corner for which Cahill extricated himself from his marker and shot the ball into the net.
But manager Roberto Di Matteo chose to go on the defensive from then on and this decision backfired as when Michael Essien was deemed to have commited a handball inside the box, Aguero scored his 17th goal through the penalty to level matters.
Tevez's introduction in the 66th minute also served as a catalyst as City upped their tempo and some brilliant interplay between the Argentinean and Samir Nasri led to the winning goal four minutes from time.
In a game that saw some very good defensive performances, it was difficult for the attackers to assert themselves and in the end, City just barely managed to win and keep their title hopes alive for yet another day.
Manchester City
Joe Hart - 6.5
The England keeper didn't have much to do in the game as Chelsea were often pegged back in their own half and an unfortunate deflection wrongfooted him and allowed for Chelsea's first goal.
Pablo Zabaleta - 7.5
The Argentinean was energetic and intent on making a name for himself on Wednesday night. He kept surging forward and he tried his best to shoot or cross or come up with some tangible contribution and although he wasn't the cleverest of footballers on the pitch, he made a difference in the end. It was his persistence that led to the first goal as Essien handballed off the cross that he was trying to drill in from the right.
Micah Richards - 7.5
The City defender was playing in the centre-back role and he was able to shackle both Torres and Drogba easily enough. He tried to lob the ball up in attack often as well but the passes were often inaccurate.
Kolo Toure - 7
Toure was a bit slow and was culpable for Torres managing to get a couple of opportunities at goal. He should have paid more attention to the marauding Mata as the Spaniard was often unmarked and so was easily able to cause some worries for Blues keeper Petr Cech.
Gael Clichy - 6.5
He was afforded a lot of time and space to cross the ball in and he kept trying again and again. But after a certain point of time, the Frenchman should have realised that quite clearly he did not have the vision to make the kind of pass that would have bamboozled the central defenders and found a free header. He just ended up wasting precious minutes that could have very well cost City the three points.
Nigel de Jong (off 66') - 6.5
He was effective at defending but he wasn't useful in many other ways. Yaya Toure was often alone and unable to rely on his midfield partner's assistance when three to four Chelsea players tried to track the Ivorian and prevent him from making the surging runs that he is well-known for.
Yaya Toure - 7.5
Toure was a menace as he played with a real footballing brain in the match. He ran forward and found areas of space and he made himself available for passes rekindling memories of his performance with Barcelona against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final a couple of years back.
David Silva (off 76') - 6.5
A surprisingly sub-standard performance by the ex-Valencia man who couldn't really produce a decent effort on goal nor was he able to carve out good goal scoring opportunities for the forwards.
Samir Nasri - 8
He scored the crucial second goal and he was lively up in attack. When the ball was at his feet, you could sense that he was capable of making something happen and were it not for Chelsea's negative tactics, the Frenchman could have really done some more damage as his mazy runs ensured that Chelsea players were often out of position.
Sergio Aguero - 7.5
The striker was a danger wth his dribbling and helped ensure that the City attack made a good showing of itself. He sprayed the ball around acting as the fulcrum for the City attack and he slotted in the penalty helping level matters in the 78th minute.
Mario Balotelli (off 45') - 7
The Italian was not contributing enough defensively and so was subbed off after half-time. He had a golden opportunity to score the opening goal when his quick thinking enabled him to intercept a poor Frank Lampard backpass in the 29th minute and he should have buried the ball into the net when he had the time.
Subs
Gareth Barry (on 45') - 7
He was brought in to keep a check on Juan Mata and Lampard and the midfielder did just that. It was a bit risky considering that Barry is not the most creative of midfielders but Balotelli could not be relied upon to not be wasteful in the match and so this was a good tactical move.
Edin Dzeko (on 76') - N/A
Carlos Tevez (on 66') - 7.5
The man of the hour came an hour and six minutes into the match. Plaudits aplently may land in the Argentinean's ears and indeed he was responsible for helping Nasri get on the scoresheet as he picked the former Arsenal player out of a crowded box and helped ensure that City stayed in the title hunt.
But before fans utilise hyperbole to sing the praises of their prodigal son, it must be noticed that aside from the assist, the volatile striker wasn't really of much use in the game as his runs were not of the highest quality and he did not have the pace to take on defenders like he used to in the past. |

Kompany could face Stoke
City captain could return; Lescott set to miss out again
By Nick Hext. Last Updated: March 22, 2012 9:07am
Vincent Kompany: Inspirational captain close to Manchester City return
Vincent Kompany could return for Manchester City against Stoke on Saturday - but Joleon Lescott is set to miss out once again.
City cut Manchester United's lead at the top of the Premier League to one point with a 2-1 win over Chelsea on Wednesday with Kolo Toure and Micah Richards producing steady displays in the centre of the defence.
The duo will hope to retain their places for the trip to the Britannia Stadium but the expected return of Kompany after he suffered a hamstring injury in the Europa League clash at Sporting on 8th March provides a timely boost.
Lescott, however, is still set to miss out with a groin problem so the former Everton man will not reconvene his partnership with Kompany at the weekend.
"Joleon I don't think but for Vinnie maybe he has some chance," said Mancini when asked for an update on the fitness of the duo ahead of the Stoke game.
Change
Mancini has admitted City's injury worries at the back have hindered their form but he thinks things are on the up following the victory against Chelsea.
"I don't think that we played well in the last three or four weeks," he added.
"I think at times we have played fantastic football but in the last month maybe it has been so-so.
"I think that after tonight maybe something can change." |

Aura positif Tevez
MANCHESTER: Pengurus Manchester City, Roberto Mancini menjangkakan Carlos Tevez akan mempamerkan peningkatan berterusan sekali gus membantu merealisasi impian skuadnya memburu gelaran Liga Perdana Inggeris.
Saya fikir ia penting buat kami.

Karim Rekik and Luca Scapuzzi have been loaned out to Portsmouth until the end of the season.
With nine games of the season to go, Pompey are bottom of the Championship and currently six points adrift of safety.
Having signed from Feyenoord last summer, Rekik became City's youngest ever overseas player when the Dutch defender made his debut against Birmingham City in September, aged just 16 years and 294 days.
20-year-old Luca made two appearances for City in the Carling Cup last autumn before a three-month stint with Oldham, where he scored twice in 17 games under Paul Dickov. |
