Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool
Wayne Rooney double sends hosts top as Luis Suarez scores at Old Trafford after snubbing Evra handshake.
Manchester United
David de Gea 6.5
Another good performance in the United goal although, in truth, he had little to do. Calm when called upon and his distribution was good.
Rafael Da Silva 7.0
The Brazilian defended with tenacity against Downing, keeping the Liverpool winger out of the game, and always looked to support Valencia in attack. Tested Reina in the first-half with a left-footed shot from inside the penalty area.
Rio Ferdinand 6.0
Looked slightly dazed after an early collision with his own team-mate but recovered well. Defensively alert throughout the game and made a superb last-ditch tackle on Suarez on the stroke of half-time. Appeared to be caught in two minds as he allowed the ball to bounce off him as Suarez pounced to score.
Jonny Evans 7.0
The Northern Irish defender was very assured and comfortable, taking up good defensive positions and challenging well in the air. Always comfortable on the ball as United built from the back.
Patrice Evra 6.0
The Frenchman was understandably furious with Suarez's decision not to shake his hand before kick-off but, commendably, kept his cool on the pitch. Defended well against Kuyt but found it more difficult when Johnson bombed forward from deep.
Antonio Valencia 7.5
The Ecuadorian looked lively from the outside, picking up the ball and charging at the Liverpool defence. Constantly caused problems for Jose Enrique and created Rooney's second with a precise pass after robbing Spearing of possession.
Michael Carrick 7.0
An understated but very effective screen in central midfield for United, especially in the way he denied Gerrard space to pick of the ball and really influence the game. As ever his passing, both short and long, was simple and efficient.
Paul Scholes 7.0
Looked like he might struggle with the pace of the game early on but settled into a pattern and started dictating play. He was given time on the ball to either spin passes out wide or play the ball into the feet of Rooney and Welbeck. Had a glorious chance in the first-half but his free header from six yards went straight at Reina.
Ryan Giggs 6.0
Fresh from signing a contract to extend his career for yet another season, the Welshman provided width on the left side and linked up well with Scholes and Rooney. His passing was at times a little inconsistent but his vision was always a danger, as shown with his superb first-half cross for Scholes.
Wayne Rooney Top of the Match 8.0
He loves nothing better than scoring against Liverpool and he did it twice with a match-winning display. Produced a clean volley for his first goal and kept his cool to slot home the second minutes later. Had plenty of joy dropping into space and linking up the play.
Danny Welbeck 7.5
Showed why he is currently the first choice to partner Rooney up front with an excellent performance. Continually troubled Liverpool with his clever use of the ball, particularly with one-touch passes. Perhaps could have been more of a threat in the penalty box but his movement, pace and strength pulled defenders out of position. |

Boss wanted bigger win
After a vital, pulsating victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson could only lament his side's inability to rack up a more emphatic scoreline.
Wayne Rooney's early second-half double made the difference for the champions, who dominated the game but were left hanging on for the result after Luis Suarez's late consolation goal.
"I thought it was a great performance by us, I’m disappointed it has ended up 2-1, to be honest with you," the manager told Sky Sports. "Maybe we did tend to just try to play out the game and keep possession, and not really threaten the way we did before we got the goals.
"I think my heart’s still out there! It was nervy in the sense that you’re playing Liverpool, they’ve come back from 2-0 down to 2-1, and you know football: anything can happen. You only need a second to lose a goal or score a goal so that was a worrying period, but we got through it.
"That’s the only fault I can find in the players, because right the way through the team we played some fantastic football. Really, really good football today."
Rooney took the plaudits - and Sky's man of the match award - for his match-winning contribution, and Sir Alex was keen to pay tribute to both his strikers.
"I thought Danny Welbeck was terrific, particularly in the first half," he said. "Scholesy was unlucky with his header, the goalkeeper had a good save. I thought we were well on top of the game, it’s just getting that goal.
"Of course, Wayne scored and then two minutes later he’s scored another one which was a great start to the second half for us." |

Sir Alex Ferguson:
''He's (Suarez) is a Disgrace To Liverpool Football Club.''
Roy Keane:
''If I was playing,if Incey was playing,if Sparky was playing: Suarez ends the game wishing he'd shaken hands.''
Cyprus international footballer Tom Williams:
''What a disgrace Suarez is ... A racist and a fool ! Get him out of football.''
Former Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright:
"I consider Patrice Evra a gentleman. He was racially abused, has yet to have an apology, yet offers his hand to the perpetrator.''
Emmanuel Frimpong:
''I have just today realised Suarez is a total wasteman Clown.''
Piers Morgan:
''Did Suarez really refuse to shake Evra's hand? How pathetic.'' |

Tahukah anda?
