Gilberto says Arsenal have struggled after failing to replace him

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto believes a failure to adequately replace him or other experienced players such as Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires is at the root of their recent decline and says it is hard to watch as Arsene Wenger抯 team struggle to even qualify for next season抯 Champions League.



The Brazilian World Cup winner was allowed to leave the club last summer to move to Greek side Panatinaikos after spending six years in north London.
Alexander Hleb and Mathieu Flamini also left the club at the same time and Gilberto has identified a weakness in the middle of the pitch as Arsenal抯 major problem this season.

Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been crowned 2008 Africa Player of the Year at a glittering Glo-CAF Awards ceremony held in Lagos.

The Arsenal frontman beat off strong competition from Egypt playmaker Mohamed Aboutrika and midfielder Michael Essien of Ghana for the Confederation of African Football's top prize.
He becomes the first player from his country to win the award, which comes on the back of a successful 12 months for himself, rather than his Premier League team, who failed to win any silverware last season.
The 24-year-old, the Togolese Player of the Year for the past four seasons, scored 31 goals for the north London side during 2008, including a run of scoring in eight consecutive games from January to mid-February.
He said: "As you know, tonight is a special night for me. I am very honoured to be here with you, especially in Lagos. I am very happy and very pleased.
"My mum is here with me. Unfortunately my father is not alive anymore but I know that wherever he is, he will be very proud of me.
"I would love to dedicate this to my mum, because without her I cannot be here.
"And I would like to say as well that we African people, we have to believe. As we know, (World Cup) 2010 is coming to Africa and we have to help each other as a family, and as a unit we can do something.
"So we have to believe and if we believe we can achieve this," added the striker, who surprisingly made the final shortlist for the first time in his career.
Ivory Coast striker Salomon Kalou was named Young Player of the Year in a category for footballers under the age of 23.
The Chelsea forward beat off competition from Stade Rennais midfielder Stephane Mbia and Inter Milan's Victor Obinna Nsofor, one of the stars of the Olympic Games in Beijing, where Nigeria finished runners-up.

Denilson Pereira Neves

I am going to write an article in support for one of our centralmidfielders, Denilson Pereira Neves, otherwise known as Denilson.

WhenWenger signed him on 31st August 2006, I remember Wenger describing himas the new Gilberto. I was very excited when Wenger made that statementbecause despite having Flamini (although his primary position was acentral midfielder, Wenger played him at left back during the lead upto the Champions League final), Diaby and Gilberto (who was 30 yearsold at the time, I felt we needed an proper understudy to Gilberto.

Howeverafter watching his progress since August 2006, I have struggled to seehow Wenger viewed Denilson as a defensive midfielder. If anything, Ifelt his style of play was very similar to the likes of Xabi Alonso(Liverpool) and Ruben Baraja (Valencia). Someone who had dual abilitiesof carrying out defensive and attacking styles in his game.

Since Vieira left at the end of the 2004/05 season, Wenger has tried the following midfield partnerships:
