■ TopknotThe flowing locks like Yi Bang-Won’s old hair means “I am not married” or “I’m a kid”. If a man get married, or if he is recognized as a grown-up even if he is unmarried (for example, if a little boy is appointed as a government officer), the man should do hair up in a topknot. It is called Sangtoo (상투) in Korean. Yi Bang-Won should have tied a topknot way earlier, especially since he married Lady Min. But I guess the SFD writers wanted to make his topknot a symbol for a departure from his childhood (or a separation from his teacher Sambong). ■ “Never call my name.”Yi Bang-Won told Boon-Yi with tears in his eyes “The (childlike) play is over. I can’t play with you like this any more”. It was a farewell to his innocent childhood. Bang-Won also told her “Never call my name.” Actually, it was breaking the social norm for a commoner girl to call a nobleman’s name like that. In those days, a name was so precious that it couldn’t be called carelessly. That’s why noblemen used another name like Sambong, Poeun, Woojae, and Hojeongwhich could be freely called by any one from any class. * Dodam Sambong (島潭三峯) Anyways, Jung Do-Jeon’s pen name Sambong (삼봉 三峯, meaning “three peaks”) came from Dadam Sambong (the three peaks on Namhan River) where he spent his childhood.

The historical background to help understand Ep. 31~32
■ Jung Do-Jeon’s Constitutional MonarchyHis system is called 재상총재제 宰相總裁制 meaning “Prime minister should be in charge of everything” system. The five rules are fictional device created by SFD writers, but the content and purpose is historically true. It was recorded in Joseon’s first constitutional law written by Jung Do-Jeon in 1394. Since England’s Glorious Revolution happened in 1688, Jung Do-Jeon was 300 years ahead in the concept of a constitutional monarchy restricted by laws. * Joseon-Gyeongguk-Jeon (조선경국전 朝鮮經國典) : Joseon’s first constitutional law written by Jung Do-Jeon in 1394, published in 1395. Why did he think prime minister should manage everything instead of King? Because king is hereditary, but prime minister is not. King’s position is hereditary so the qualities of a king can be random, like either clever or foolish, either violent or weak. However prime minister is chosen by the king over the other candidates who have already proved their qualities several times by passing the state exam, by experiencing various state affairs, by gaining colleagues’ support. Even if a king is incompetent, it is not easy to replace him. However, the prime minister in charge of the politics can be replaced easily if common people suffer from his politics. For the sake of the people, he thought, it would be better to appoint more easily replaceable authorities in charge of politics. That’s his basic logic. Then, what’s the difference between Goryeo‘s Dodang system and Jung Do-Jeon’s prime minister-centric system? Well, quite different. Most of all, Joseon’s king should be a competent Confucian scholar himself. It is well-known fact that Joseon’s kings should study, work, discuss nonstop for over 20 hours a day. Moreover, unlike Goryeo’s hereditary nobility, Joseon’s ruling class are more like the meritocracy. If 3 generations of your family have failed to pass the state exam, your whole family will be degraded from nobles to commoners. Therefore, every nobles fanatically forced their sons to study hard in order to survive. That’s one of the reasons why the enthusiasm for education in Korea is really that high up to these days. As Yi Bang-Won killed Jung Do-Jeon in 1398, Yi Bang-Won’s absolute monarchy seems to have defeated Jung Do-Jeon’s constitutional monarchy. However, Yi Bang-Won kept Jeong Do-Jeon’s reforms intact for the most part, and Jung Do-Jeon’s Sadaebu-centric ideology had permeated and flourished even though his name had been a taboo for about 500 years. Most of all, Joseon’s politics gradually slanted to minister-centric politics while monarchs were losing power as time went by. Even Kangxi Emperor (강희제 康熙帝 1654~1722) of Qing Dynasty, one the greatest emperors in the history of China, met Joseon’s envoy and told him “Do you know your country’s biggest problem? Your king is too weak and the ministers are too powerful.” So, the final winner is Jung Do-Jeon after all. However, there were flaws in his system. His good purpose had gradually tarnished and the system was degenerated into factional strifes among Sadaebu ministers. Jung Do-Jeon created a verification system to use the doubt and envy of Sadaebu, but as Cho-Young of Hwasadan told Bang-Won, Sadaebu also have a habit of creating “factions”. Jung Do-Jeon couldn’t imagine his check and balance system would cause extreme factional strifes which went as far as to exterminate the opposition party for trivial matters. The consumptive partisan brawls for hundreds of years had led to the collapse of Joseon dynasty.

■ Gyeongdeokgung Palace (경덕궁 敬德宮)Yi Seong-Gye had two private residences in Gaegyung before he became a king. : Mokcheong masion (목청전 穆淸殿) and Gyeongdeok masion (경덕전 敬德殿). SFD writers described that Yi Bang-Won moved out to Gyeongdeok masion given by his father-in-law Min Je, but it is not true. It was Yi family’s house to begin with. Yi Seong-Gye used the mansion as his temporary palace for a short period of time after Joseon was founded. Later, Yi Bang-Won became the mansion’s owner and raised its status to a palace. However, it had been burnt down during the Japanese invasion (1592~1598) and no traces of the original palace remained except for the main gate. ■ Yacha (야차 夜叉)
The English subtitle seem to translate Moo-Hyul’s new nickname as “The demon in Dowah mansion”, right? It is not demon but Yacha (야차 夜叉) in Korean. (“Yaksa” in Sanskrit, “Yasha” in Japanese) Yacha is the divine guardian of the northern quarter and a beneficent god who protects the righteous in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist texts. However, when it was introduced to Korea, it gained ferocious images to trample evil spirits and killing people ruthlessly and bloodthirstily.
■ Land reformsI have already posted about it twice. In September 1390, the land registers of corrupt nobles, being piled mountain-high in the street of Gaegyung, had been burnt for about 7 days. People watching this scene shed tears of joy. As a result of the land reforms, the conservative privileged nobles lost their economic power and collapsed. Meanwhile, the reformist Sadaebu scholars gained economic foundation under the new system, and the age of Sadaebu scholars had begun. The tax burden on commoners were lightened, but they couldn’t possess their own lands. (Boon-Yi’s dream was shattered.) King Gongyang lamented that Goryeo’s traditional land system was abolished, of all times, under his reign. Of course, it is a fictional device for Jung Do-Jeon to set fire personally to the piled papers.
