Fairuzizuan-Zakry ease past Paaske-Rasmussen

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian men抯 doubles pairing of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Latif made a bright start to their Copenhagen Masters campaign with a convincing straight games win over former world champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen in their opening Group B match at the Falconer Centre in Copenhagen yesterday.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry took 29 minutes for the 21-19, 21-15 win which avenged their loss to the Danish pair in the semi-finals of the Taiwan Open in September this year.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry, ranked 16th in the world, are seeking to end the year on a high as the Malaysian doubles representatives in the invitational tournament.

They will earn a ticket to the final if they beat another Danish pair, Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, today.

Group A consists of Danish veterans Martin Lundgaard Hansen-Jens Eriksen, Germans Kristof Hopp-Ingo Kindervater and Polish pair Michal Logosz-Robert Mateusiak.

Malaysia's Kuan Beng Hong also got secured a winning start in the men抯 singles yesterday when he beat world number 14 Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland 18-21, 21-11, 21-16 in Group A.

Beng Hong is scheduled to play local favourite Peter-Gade Christensen in a later match yesterday.

Christensen is the defending champion and is tipped to qualify for the final again.

Roslin Hashim is scheduled to play Dicky Palyama of Holland in Group B later yesterday.

Palyama had lost his opening match to Denmark抯 number two Kenneth Jonassen 11-21, 10-21 earlier.

Women抯 doubles pairs to work with Rexy
By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: The women抯 doubles players will be put under the charge of Rexy Mainaky until the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) find a replacement for Cheah Soon Kit, who tendered his resignation on Thursday.

BAM general manager Kenny Goh said they accepted Soon Kit抯 resignation from the national coaching set-up and the matter will be discussed during the next training and coaching committee meeting, which is likely to take place by the first week of January.

揥e will write to the National Sports Council (NSC) and also inform the president Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Salleh on Soon Kit抯 resignation.

BAM will either look for a replacement for Soon Kit from their own stable of coaches or source for a foreign coach.

But in the meantime, national head coach Yap Kim Hock said the two senior women抯 doubles pairs

Fairuzizuan-Zakry storm into final

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian men抯 doubles pair of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Latif are just one match away from ending the year on a high note.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry secured a place in the final of the Copenhagen Masters when they came from behind to beat Danish pair Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 18-21, 21-16, 21-18 at the Falconer Centre in Copenhagen yesterday.

It was the second straight victory for the Malaysian pair in Group B and yesterday抯 outcome ensured them a place in today's final.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry had started on a strong note when they chalked a convincing 21-19, 21-15 win over former world champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen on Thursday.

Paaske and Rasmussen, the world champions in 2003, were scheduled to complete their group campaign against Boe-Mogensen at press-time.

The Malaysian pair are likely to fight it out with world number seven doubles pair of Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen in the final.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry, who were paired together in April this year, are seeking to win their first international title and lifting the title in the invitational meet will be a good way to kick off their Olympic aspirations next year.

The Malaysian pair are currently ranked 16th in the world and in contention to earn a spot in the Beijing Olympics before the qualifying period ends by April next year.

Veteran Malaysian singles player Roslin Hashim made a winning start on Thursday evening by beating Dutch player Dicky Palyama 21-16, 21-16 in a Group B match.

Roslin was scheduled to face Denmark抯 second ranked singles player Kenneth Jonassen at press-time to decide who tops Group B for a place in the final.

Peter-Gade Christensen, who is chasing his eighth Copenhagen Masters title in nine years, opened accounts by beating Malaysia抯 Kuan Beng Hong 21-17, 21-16 in a Group A match on Thursday evening.

Christensen was scheduled to play his second match against Przemyslaw Wacha at press-time.

Beng Hong had beaten the world number 14 Wacha 18-21, 21-11, 21-16 on Thursday.

Every country needs a heroine

Each time Wong Mew Choo enters a badminton competition, she is fully aware that she represents each and every Malaysian. And she is determined that all of us emerge victorious in the world arena.

MALAYSIAN STORIES

MALAYSIAN badminton has a new heroine and her name is Wong Mew Choo. The 25-year-old national shuttler caught the attention of the world this year when, unseeded, she vanquished Chinese female badminton players including World No.1 Xie Xingfang in the final to win the China Open Super Series title in November.

(Mew Choo is the first Malaysian woman and the second non-China player to win a woman抯 singles title on Chinese soil since the tournament began in 1986.)
Malaysia Boleh!: Mew Choo has made every Malaysian believe that nothing is impossible.

Meeting Mew Choo face-to-face, one is surprised that this dragon slayer is kind of ? small.

After her fantastic performance in China

Danish pair dash Fairuzizuan-Zakry title hopes

PETALING JAYA: The hopes of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Latif to lift their maiden international title were crushed by Danish veterans Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen in the men's doubles final of the Copenhagen Masters invitational at the Falconer Centre yesterday.

The Malaysian pair were beaten 11-21, 17-21 in just 32 minutes.

It was the first Copenhagen Masters title for the Danish pair, who have two All-England titles to their names.

Eriksen-Hansen had topped Group A with a 21-15, 21-19 win over Poland's Michal Logosz-Robert Mateusiak in the evening session on Friday. They had beaten Ingo Kindervater-Kristof Hopp of Germany 21-16, 21-15 on Thursday.

Fairuzizuan-Zakry beat two Danish pairs to emerge as the Group B winner. They scored a 21-19, 21-15 win over former world champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen on Thursday and came from behind to down Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 18-21, 21-16, 21-18 the following day.

For Fairuzizuan-Zakry, it was the second time that they played in a final of an international competition since they were paired eight months ago. They were the runners-up in the Indonesian Open in May.

The pair are currently ranked 16th in the world and have a shot at qualifying for the Beijing Olympics if they do well in Super Series events before the May deadline for qualification.

Dane Peter-Gade Christensen lifted his eighth title in nine years, beating Kenneth Jonassen 21-18, 23-21 in the men's singles final yesterday.
