United to retire Giggs' number

Manchester United are considering retiring Welsh wizard Ryan Giggs' No.11 shirt when he decides to call it a day.

News of the World reported that unofficial talks have already been held by the United board on how to commemorate the career of the most successful player in the club's history.

"Although people may talk of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton, they played in an era when such moves were impossible as shirts were numbered 1-11." said a United insider.

"Retiring the number 11 shirt would have no complaints from many United fans - though on current form Ryan's departure looks to be quite a way off yet."

The 35-year-old winger seems to have found a new lease of life this season with some scintillating performances.

Giggsy holds quite a few records at United like being the only player to have scored in every Premier League season since its inception in 1992.

He is also the player with the most appearances and trophies.

In his 19-year career span as a Red Devil, Giggs has 10 league titles, four FA Cups, two Champions League titles, three League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one Club World Cup.

Man Utd vs Porto Preview

Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira believes his team must be cleverer than Manchester United if they are to succeed tonight.

Although Porto knocked United out on their way to lifting the European Cup under Jose Mourinho in 2004, the clubs have drifted apart since then.

United's vast wealth helped them become champions last season and yet again, all four English teams have reached the last eight.

But Ferreira remains undeterred and feels Porto can record a shock win.

"When you look at the money rankings and analyse the differences, it gives a certain pleasure to see us there," said Ferreira.

"United and Porto's conditions are different. The leagues are different and the players too.

"I would like to say we could sign big stars but it wouldn't be true. We have to sign players nobody knows.

"But the game is the same and we can compete for results and titles. We just have to be cleverer than the other teams."

Ferreira dismissed the perceived advantage Porto may have due to United playing twice in 48 hours, having pulled off a last-gasp victory over Aston Villa yesterday.

The former Portugal Under-21 coach believes United must have the squad to cope, otherwise they would have pushed the Villa game back to the Saturday as originally planned.

Rotation is not an option open to Ferreira, who has still managed to guide Porto towards a third successive league title while keeping alive their European ambitions.

"It is hard for us to save players," he said.

"We have a heavy schedule but have not been able to rest players because they are all games we want to win.

"It is inevitable we have so many games but we just have to cope with it."

United will be bolstered by the return of Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Paul Scholes from suspension, although not Rio Ferdinand, who is still troubled by a groin injury.

As well as that trio, Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to call on Park Ji-Sung, whose energy could be a useful weapon.

However, the majority of Ferguson's starting line-up will be asked to follow up from yesterday, ensuring there was only time for a massage and a few loosening exercises in training this morning.

Most pundits have written off FC Porto, who have been installed as the outsiders for the competition.

However, such talk will not lull United into a false sense of security, with Cristiano Ronaldo wary of the damage his fellow countrymen could cause.

"orto are a very good team," said the FIFA World Player of the Year.

"They are top of the league back home, ahead of Sporting Lisbon and Benfica and we know how strong they can be.

"The good thing is we have two games against them and I feel that will be enough to get us through."

Although United are odds-on favourites to reach a third successive semi-final, Ferguson will not take for granted a side that finished above Arsenal in the group phase and then defeated a highly-rated Atletico Madrid outfit on away goals in the last round.

The impressively-named Hulk provides a physical threat, with strike partner Lisandro Lopez equally capable of causing United damage.

"It would be stupid to think this is going to be easy," said Ferguson.

"When teams are used to winning their domestic title, as Porto are in Portugal, you always feel they will play with great confidence.

"They have a lot of South Americans in their team as well, which gives them a great physical strength.

"By beating Atletico Madrid, Porto proved they will be hard to beat. Complacency does not come into it as far as we are concerned.

"We will be going at full throttle in order to get the result we want."

Man Utd's Ronaldo insists he's "at the right club"

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed the latest reports linking him with a summer move to Real Madrid and insisted that he is "at the right club."

Ronaldo earns a smile from Fergie after saying the right thing in Monday's press conference

Both the reigning World and European player of the year and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson were not impressed when quizzed about the latest unsubstantiated reports linking the 23-year-old Portuguese midfielder with the Bernabeu.

In a press conference ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter final game against FC Porto, Ferguson wondered aloud "how many times" more he would have to endure such speculation before describing such reports as "pathetic".

Sitting alongside his manager, Ronaldo agreed, shrugged before adding: "We always have this question." The player, who scored twice in Sunday's vital 3-2 win over Aston Villa, moved to draw a line under the questioning by insisting: "I am happy at this club. I think it is the right club."

Over the weekend there were claims that Real Madrid were planning to launch a £75m bid for Ronaldo and were offering an annual salary of
