PREVIEW: Bayern Munich aim to deliver as Bundesliga restarts
Hamburg - Now that Bayern Munich have settled the most pressing issues for the new season it is time to concentrate on the present again as the Bundesliga restarts on Friday. Munich lead the way on goal difference over Werder Bremen into a Friday date at Hansa Rostock, determined to overcome some hiccups late last year ahead of the winter break.
The second half of the season marks the last 17 games for coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who wants to bid farewell with another Bundesliga title in May.
Munich used the hibernation period to select former Germany coach and Munich player Juergen Klinsmann as Hitzfeld's replacement and on Wednesday unveiled American Martin Vasquez as Klinsmann's assistant. :victory:
Munich started superbly into the season, but then slumped in the closing stages of 2007 with just one win in their last seven games, with a mere four goals scored in the period and a six-point lead thrown away.
Tuesday's dress rehearsal went fairly well as Munich won a cup game 5-2 at third division Wuppertal, mainly due to a convincing second half where they broke a 2-2 tie.
General manager Uli Hoeness named the second half "breathtaking" and named the team fit for the three-title quest in the league, German cup and UEFA Cup.
Hitzfeld, however, warned that "we will need a few more games to be in our best shape."
The game in Rostock will be a tougher test even though the Bavarians have lost there only once in 11 trips. In addition, Rostock got no motivation boost in the cup as they crashed 2-1 at second division Hoffenheim.
But midfielder Enrico Kern insisted: "You can not compare Munich and Hoffenheim because we will have nothing to lose on Friday."
Munich are the top title favourite among players as well with 15 of the 18 team captains seeing them in front of Bremen at the end of the season.
Bremen host lowly VfL Bochum on Sunday after losing their cup game 2-1 at Borussia Dortmund, but midfielder Tim Borowski is upbeat that his team is good enough for the title before he joins Munich in summer.
"Of course I want to come to Munich as Bundesliga champion," he told Thursday's edition of Kicker sports magazine.
Bremen are without Germany midfielder Torsten Frings due to another knee injury so Munich hope to get out of the 2008 starting blocks well ahead of their showdown in Munich next week.
Third-placed SV Hamburg host number seven Hanover 96 on Saturday after a convincing 3-0 cup win at third division Essen which indicated that they could be a threat for the top duo.
Schalke 04 hope to rebound from a cup defeat in Wolfsburg on Sunday against mid-table champions VfB Stuttgart.
The other games, all on Saturday, are Energie Cottbus vs. Bayer Leverkusen, SC Karlsruhe vs. Nuremberg, MSV Duisburg vs. Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin vs. Eintracht Frankfurt and Arminia Bielefeld vs. VfL Wolfsburg. |

Bayern Munich beats Hansa Rostock 2-1 in second half of the Bundesliga
Bayern Munich beat Hansa Rostock 2-1 on first-half goals from Franck Ribery and Luca Toni to kick off the second half of the Bundesliga season on Friday.
Rostock got back into the match after Enrico Kern's goal in the 52nd minute and Bayern was lucky to escape with the win that gave it a three-point provisional lead over Werder Bremen, which plays on Sunday against Bochum.
"The early goal in the second half unsettled us and we didn't play real soccer after that," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. "But we took the three points and that's what counts, although I am not happy with the way we played in the second half."
Bayern got off to a strong start and Ribery finished a smart move that began with Miroslav Klose's pass to Ze Roberto. The Brazilian then swung a short pass inside and Ribery knocked the ball home from close range in the 11th minute.
Toni got his club-high 10th goal of the season in the 42nd, after a pass from Mark van Bommel, to crown Bayern's dominance.
But Hansa stepped up the pressure after the break and Kern scored unchallenged after his first effort had been saved by Oliver Kahn.
Bayern didn't have another chance until two late attempts by Toni, while Rostock should have gotten more out of several opportunitie |

The wait is over - captain Ballack returns to team
Michael Ballack returns to the Mannschaft. For the first time since March 24 of last year, the captain rejoins Germany, as coach Joachim L鰓 has nominated the 31-year old midfielder of FC Chelsea London for next Wednesday抯 friendly against Austria. Ballack had been sidelined for eigth months due to a severe ankle injury.
