Super strike means nothing if we don't reach semis, says Arsenal's Champions League hero Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor played down his wonder goal against Villarreal, claiming it will count for nothing if Arsenal fail to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The Togo striker scored a brilliant equaliser at El Madrigal to hand Arsenal the advantage ahead of next Wednesday's return leg.

But he said: 'Scoring good goals is fine, but the most important thing is that you have to win games.

'We all know how much quality Cesc (Fabregas) has and when I saw him about to look for me with the pass I had another idea in mind,' Adebayor told www.uefa.com.
'But the way I controlled it I was only left with the option of the overhead kick. As a striker you're used to making that kind of split-second decision and I made the correct choice this time.'
Team-mate Theo Walcott hailed Adebayor's sensational strike, but also warned that Villarreal would still pose Arsenal problems in the second leg.



'It was probably one of the best goals I have seen in the Champions League, a special goal from a special player,' England winger Walcott said.

'Hopefully that can spur us on into the next round. However, the job is not yet done. They are a very dangerous team on the break, they pass the ball very well and (Marcos) Senna has got a brilliant shot on him, so we have got to track him down and not let him have those situations again.'



Meanwhile, UEFA will await reports from the referee and match delegates before deciding whether to investigate the ugly second-half incident that saw Villarreal supporters throw objects at Arsenal captain Fabregas.

The Spain midfielder, booked in the first half, was jeered throughout and the home fans took particular exception to his challenge on Joan Capdevila that they felt should have resulted in a red card.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: 'I saw that there were coins or boxes thrown at him. Certainly UEFA will make an inquiry and make the right decisions.'
