Grease Report
ada fan baik hati buat report ttg butai Grease nih .. puas hati gak ler baca komen dia ..heheh Toma superb !
Grease report from nyonyo@lj (31/10/2008)
![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/meimichi2/photos/grease1.png)
Initial, overall thoughts before the full report:
+ The show was the version of the musical that was from before the movie, so no "Hopelessly Devoted" or "You're The One That I Want." The lack of "Hopelessly Devoted" is really felt, Sandy didn't get an extended solo song until almost the very end with "Goodbye to Sandra Dee." So the show as a whole felt somewhat uneven in how all the bit players had their own songs when the female lead didn't (really it was a shame, since the girl playing Sandy was the best singer in the show too). And Grease does kind of lose a lot in translation, it seemed very cleaned-up just by being translated somehow. XD; But the setpieces were amazing, the costumes were cute, and the cast was very very good.
+ Toma needs another comedy role in a drama, stat. I loved him in "Maou," but I want to see him again in something where they just let him go absolutely crazy. Preferably this time where the drama doesn't suck every moment he isn't onscreen (coughHanakimicough). He went into full-on dork mode here, really hamming it up. He isn't just unafraid of making himself look ridiculous, he seems to be actively aiming to make himself look as ridiculous as possible to go for the laugh. That fearlessness and confidence in his performance, I found it really magnetic. As I said, his performance was really light (and it's not like Grease is Shakespeare to start with), but during this one serious moment I was really really happy my seat was close enough to see his face properly, because woooow. <3
+ Toma definitely owned the show, but if anyone came close to stealing it then it was Miki. Both of them were always 100% in character, all of the time, and during large group scenes where they were in the background, I was always torn on which one to keep my eye on, because they would both be adding in these great little acting touches when focus wasn't on them.
+ They also had disturbingly good chemistry, much better than Toma's with the girl playing Sandy. Seemed kind of a waste, they looked so comfortable together during the scene with Danny and Rizzo going to the dance together, while the Danny and Sandy scenes were just...not so much? Though the kissing was A++.
+ But really, there was one point where Rizzo just went after Danny (I don't remember where it was at all though), and everyone else had to pull her off him, and I remember thinking, "I find myself totally believing that Miki could kick Toma's ass." I REALLY THINK SHE COULD.
+ In conclusion, TOMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. |

Okay, report time! I'm not going to really cover the story as a whole because I think everyone has a good idea of what it's about already.
I got there early, and had a seat just left of the center, in row H. Very nice seat. :3 They played fifties songs before the show started, with a mix of some Grease songs in English thrown in there (I think they were playing the movie ones not in the show only, they definitely played "Hopelessly Devoted.")
I was expecting a higher number of guys in the audience due to Miki, but only saw like...five. (There were probably a few more, and five was much more than the "none" I saw at Ohno's butai.) Sitting next to me were a man and a woman in their late thirties. I thought initially that they must be a married couple, which would have been the cutest thing ever since husbands are never seen being dragged along to these things, but the woman was speaking in keigo the whole time so it seemed unlikely. She was in full-on fangirl mode, whipping out her totally unnecessary binoculars, which he teased her for having.
The lights went down and the curtain went up, and there was a big graffiti-painted backdrop decorated with retro pop art. The top of it had little doors that rolled open, and it showed the band performing all of the music live behind the backdrop, then closed again.
Then the lights went out, and a giant glowing full moon setpiece descended from the ceiling, with Danny and Sandy silhouetted against it clasping hands. (It looked identical to the final shot of Usagi and Mamoru in the Sailormoon anime.) They're both heartbroken that summer is over and they have to part, and Danny tells her this is only the beginning, and they embrace against the moon. (The hugging looked awkwaaaard, from my seat's angle you could tell they weren't getting close at all. XD;)
Scene change to the high school. The Pink Ladies are eating lunch inside at the cafeteria (their lunch trays had mini milk cartons, I thought that was a cute touch), with the T-Birds hanging outside the school entrance, each on different sides of the stage. Rizzo was dressed entirely in black (with purple or red accents) for the entire show to make her stand out. The Pink Ladies discuss the new transfer student, who is rumored to be a total "ojousama," while the T-Birds talk about their goal of one day having a car to cruise around in.
Sandy and Danny both enter on the opposite sides. Sandy is indeed in full "ojousama" mode, answering every question with, "ええ。" and ending every sentence with "わ" and soooo grating. Danny says he spent the summer at the beach and met a girl, and the other boys pester him for details:
"You wanna know?"
"Yeah, we wanna know!!"
"(flips them off) Like I'd tell you!"
Goes into "Summer Nights," which I remember thinking lost a lot in translation into Japanese, seemed a lot less sexed-up in the lyrics (except the line where they talk about being together and Danny claims "朝まで" while Sandy says "10時まで!"). Rizzo keeps saying sourly about everything Sandy says, "最低っ!" |

The Pink Ladies exit through the front door, and Sandy and Danny freeze when they see each other, then dash to each other squealing each others' names, both of them jumping up and down clasping each others' hands like giddy schoolgirls on speed, giggling like total dorks. Danny freezes, remembers everyone is watching and that he's not actually a giddy schoolgirl, then drops Sandy's hands like a hot coal, fixing his hair in a *~manly~* way and being like, "YEAH WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT." Sandy is all, SADFACE WHY DO YOU NOT LOVE ME ANYMORE (((
Scene change. The T-Birds sing "Magic Changes." All of them get down on their knees and serenade one girl sitting in the front row of the audience. (I could sort of see her losing her # from my angle, she was waving to them and looked like she was going to absolutely die of happiness. I do not blame her.) One of the T-Birds was last to leave the stage, and he made a motion as if to go back and reach out to grab her hand, and I could see the girl in the audience even reaching out back for him, and then he exited with a wink to her.
Scene change to Frenchie's house, the Pink Ladies having a sleepover. The bedroom set was super-cute! Sandy was wearing a hilarious prissy full-length frilly nightgown. Sandy doesn't smoke or drink and doesn't want Frenchie to pierce her ears. Every time the other girls act incredulous about what a priss she is, she poses like a wilting flower and says, "気にしないで!" They're not worried about you, Sandy, they just think you're a moron.
Rizzo tells Sandy that if she won't let Frenchie pierce her ears, she can forget about being in the Pink Ladies, and otherwise she might as well go home. Sandy relents, and Frenchie drags her offstage to the bathroom to pierce her ears, where we can hear Sandy scream and start throwing up.
With Sandy still in the bathroom, the Pink Ladies sing "Freddy My Love," with really cute standard cheesy slumber party choreography, all of them in their pajamas lying on their stomachs, kicking their legs in time to the rhythm. As the song ends, they all go to bed, except Rizzo. She stalks out of the house, just as Sandy reemerges from the bathroom in time to see her leave.
Scene change to the T-Birds minus Danny, who stolen gotten some hubcaps and fuzzy dice to pimp out the car they do not own yet. We all know the chicks go wild for the fuzzy dice. The T-Birds are all caught in headlights, and up drives Danny wearing sunglasses, in a very well-made setpiece of a car with real headlights. It's a total piece of crap car, but they all declare that they'll fix it up. Rizzo strolls up and mocks the car, and Kenickie pulls her aside and tells her to go to the burger place down the road and he'll be down in five minutes to pick her up.
Then the T-Birds all sing "Greased Lightning." The choreography was ripped directly from the movie in spots, all of them doing the movie choreography move on "Greased lightning, go, Greased Lightning!" I thought one of the guys playing the T-Birds was not quite putting his heart and soul into his hip thrusts, but everyone else definitely was. XD
Scene change, Sandy is practicing with Patty to be a cheerleader, but she is really terrible at it. Patty walks off, and Danny walks on, seeing Sandy practicing alone. He apologizes for blowing her off before, saying he just can't be all *~sensitive~* in front of the guys, but reassures her of his feelings. She is delighted, and cries out, "We'll never let anyone get in the way of our love again!" Then they clasp hands and do the jumping-up-and-down-like-schoolgirls-on-speed dance again...until Patty walks back in and calls to Danny, who leaps away from Sandy to yank up his jacket collar all *~manly~* and screams at Patty, "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT?!!" Hilaaaarious.
Because Sandy is going to be a cheerleader, Danny is convinced he needs to join a sports team to impress her, and Patty eggs him on. He claims he can play any sport and be the best, and demands, "What's the next sports event?" Patty says it's track and field, and Danny shrieks in horror, "Track? Where they make you wear those teeny tiny little shorts?!!! Why can't it be football or something?!!!!" but relents and declares he will join the track team so Sandy can witness his coolness.
Scene change, and the T-Birds, minus Danny, are hanging out. Apparently there is going to be a *~rumble~* sometime in the future, and they are looking to find Danny so he can join in...and in enters Danny, running to train for track, indeed in the tiniest pair of white shorts imaginable. He shrieks when he sees the T-Birds, mortified, and one of the T-Birds asks in fascination while examining the teeny shorts, "Where do you keep your cigarettes in that getup?"
Danny answers, "Funny you should ask," and reaches down his pants to retrieve his cigarettes and lighter. I DIED. They tell him they need him to join their fight, and he tells them he's in training and doesn't have time. They get mad at him, and he grandly tells them, "Okay, okay, I'll do it........BUT ONLY IF COACH SAYS IT'S OKAY!!" and jogs offstage, waving at them as he puffs on his cigarette. XD
The T-Birds and the Pink Ladies are later hanging out on the bleachers. Jan and Roger sing "Mooning" and kiss at the end. Sandy and Danny are sitting on a blanket together nearby. Danny is upset because Sandy is cheering at some other match instead of the track competition he'll be in, but she cheerfully tells him to ganbatte. He tries to convince her that he's becoming a *~better man~*, proudly telling her, "I was gonna help the guys out with their fight, but coach said I couldn't...so I phoned them up and apologized!!!" (The way he said it was just adorable. "I couldn't go kick the crap out of these other guys but it's okay! I said I was SORRY! Praise meeee!")
They end up having a fight but I don't remember what about, Sandy gets dragged off by another one of the boys, protesting all the way.
Rizzo gets fed up watching Sandy, and sings "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee" on the bleachers, dancing with the other T-Birds attempting to grope her as she pushes them away and looks scandalized (I was amused that she described Sandra Dee as a "burikko"). Angry at Kenickie, Rizzo asks Danny to the prom, and he accepts.
Act two starts with the prom. Danny and Rizzo show up together, while Kenickie brings a girl named Cha-Cha (who is played by a guy done up in drag-queen style with overdone makeup). Toma looked goooorgeous in a suit with pink shirt and...I think the scarf he had on was grey, sort of cravat-style but more cool-looking? I adored Miki's dress; black with a poofy skirt, with her petticoats bright purple and peeking out from under the hem. Like I said, their chemistry was really good. I just came off with the impression those two were really tight, they looked really comfortable with their arms around each other and smiling at each other. |

Jan wins the chance to sing on the live radio at the dance, and a small set for Sandy's bedroom was wheeled onto the right side of the stage as she listens to the radio in her room, singing along with "It's Raining On Prom Night," still in her petticoat, looking at her pink prom dress still on its hanger.
On the prom side of the stage, Rizzo leaves Danny's side, and he walks to the left side of the stage, clearly wishing Sandy were there with him, gazing off into the audience longingly. Toma was so freaking good here with such a totally small moment, he was just standing there and yet his expression was so amazing!
The dance contest begins, but Rizzo has reconciled with Kenickie so Danny is left without a partner, so Kenickie sets him up with Cha-Cha. The rules state all naughty dancing will get couples disqualified, and Rizzo yells out, "That means we'll be out right away!" and indeed, she and Kenickie get kicked out for their dirty dancing act. XD Toma's dancing was suuuuuper good. Obviously Danny and Cha-Cha win the contest. They run outside the school with their trophy, right as Sandy runs up in her pretty dress, and she sees them leaving together.
"Beauty School Dropout" was totally adorable, with Frenchie's guardian angel being lowered from the ceiling in a basket, and girl dancers in salon chairs with their hair being done, just like in the movie. Super cute!! Frenchie's wardrobe was totally cute the entire show, as well, wearing these terrible extreme wardrobe combinations to show off her "stylishness." XD
Sandy and Danny reconcile, and he takes her in the car to the drive-in movie theater. They're watching some werewolf horror movie, with Sandy focused on the movie as Danny looks at her. Toma was hilarious here. Danny's like, "...you can come a little closer, if you want," and she says cheerfully, "No, don't worry about me, I'm fine here!" and then he attempts for the, "Okay I'm just gonna streeeetch my arms and then I'm gonna put my arm around her shoulders because I'm suuuuuper smooooooth!" act, but Toma TOTALLY hammed it up and was stretching for like...ten seconds, being really really obvious about it.
Danny asks hesitantly, "You aren't seeing any other guys, are you?" and she says no. He gives her his ring (it gets stuck on his finger and he's trying to yank it off for like ten seconds again, and when he does get it off his hand goes flying and he accidentally gropes her) and asks her to formally become his girlfriend, and she delightedly accepts it, and they kiss (*~intensely~*). They pull away, and then he pushes her down on the seat, as she frantically tells him they only just became official and it's too fast for her, but he says triumphantly, "Don't worry, Sandy! Because..." and here Toma looks up and he freaking mugs to the entire audience, cackling, "...nobody's watching!" FUNNIEST. MOMENT. EVER. Way to break the fourth wall.
She shoves him off and runs out of the car upset, taking off the ring and throwing it at him, and he tries to follow her but she inadvertantly slams the car right on his hand, leaving him shrieking in pain and howling, "Come baaaack, you can't walk home, it's too faaaaaar!" XD
Left alone, Danny leans against the car, and sings "Alone at a Drive-In Movie," very nice. :3 I wasn't expecting great things from Toma's vocals, but while he certainly doesn't have one of those voices made for musicals and holding out the long notes the way other people in the cast could, I was really impressed overall~
Scene change, everyone except Danny is at a party. Sandy makes a move to go home, as everyone else protests, and Rizzo spits out angrily that she only came because she was hoping Danny would show up. Marty pulls Rizzo aside and asks if she's so bitchy because she's on her period, and Rizzo says she wishes she were; it's five days late. She says, "Don't tell anyone," but as she turns her back, the story starts circulating around the room until it reaches Kenickie, who yells, "Rizzo, you're pregnant?!"
She glares daggers at everyone and snaps, "Rumors sure do travel fast." Kenickie grabs her arm, but she shoves him away and snaps, "Don't worry! It's not yours!" Miki was freaking amazing here, the audience went dead silent, and Kenickie looked in equal parts crushed and furious as he glared at her and stalked out of the room.
The Pink Ladies and other T-Birds all offer to do whatever they can to be there for Rizzo, and she screams at all of them to ***** off and leave her the hell alone. Everyone except Sandy makes a speedy exit from the party, who stays behind to clean up, and hesitantly approaches Rizzo, saying, "A baby...it's kind of a difficult thing to deal with isn't it?"
Rizzo turns on her furiously, and screams, "Shut up! You're pathetic, always waiting for some prince who will never come! You don't know anything!!" Sandy answers, "I know the baby is really Kenickie's, isn't it? You just lied back there to him, didn't you?" This segues into "There Are Worse Things I Could Do," with Miki standing center stage, singing out to the audience. She was so good.
Rizzo leaves, and Sandy is left wondering who the "real her" is. She calls up Frenchie and asks her to come over and bring over her makeup kit to prepare for a serious makeover, and then she sings "Goodbye to Sandra Dee." That girl seriously has a voice made for musicals, she can just make the notes soar.
The T-Birds are back at the burger place, and the Pink Ladies enter, with Rizzo saying she has a surprise for Danny. In enters Sandy, post-makeover, and Danny's jaw DROPS TO THE FLOOR. XD Sandy says that this is her "real self." Danny clasps her hands and explains that he tried for so long to pretend to be someone else by running track so that she would notice how cool he was, but since she never did he's decided to quit and just be himself.
Sandy suggests that Danny take her out again sometime. He suggests the drive-in again, and she says dryly, "The werewolf movie again!" and he's all, "No no, it's changed to Frankenstein!" and she agrees to go. Rizzo and Kenickie reconcile, she's not pregnant after all yay! HAPPY ENDINGS ALL AROUND. Everyone dances to "We Go Together," Danny and Sandy kiss as they dance on top of the restaurant countertop.
Here, the entire audience started clapping along in rhythm to the song as the show ended. The band continued playing all through the curtain calls, and it was super fun because we all kept clapping to the rhythm of the music, and then erupting into normal applause when the actors would take their bows, and then returning back to clapping to the rhythm, back and forth and back and forth.
When Toma came out everyone gave him a standing ovation and kept clapping to the rhythm, and it really felt like a huge party. There were a few curtain calls, I lost count. Toma would come back out and then wave the rest of the cast on back with him every time, bowing really low.
With Ohno's butai he came out all alone and spoke to the audience at the end, but this show was much more of a group effort so it was nice for him to treat it that way by never coming out alone. I thought it would be best to just end on the fun feeling of everyone clapping along together than for him to come out and talk anyway, and that's how it finished.
I was really happy I got the chance to go see this, it was such fun. And I didn't know anything about Miki until seeing this, but I became a bit of a fan; I went home to look her up on Dramawiki and was disappointed to find out she didn't even have a page! I hope to see her in something in the future, she was really good in this. And if Toma does another butai while I'm in Japan, I'm there.
I'm guessing a DVD is proooobably unlikely for this one just because of the rights issues; too bad. But it'll probably be recorded to show clips on Shounen Club's stage report at least, looking forward to it. :3 Totally satisfied!!
THE END OF REPORT ![](static/image/smiley/default/lol.gif)
