Arsene Wenger critical of Emmanuel Eboue
Arsene Wenger criticised Emmanuel Eboue for allowing emotions to get the better of him in the match against Tottenham when the player was sent off in the first half of the north London derby that ended 0-0.
Eboue apologised for kicking out at Luka Modric in the 36th minute to earn his second yellow card, but the Arsenal manager believes the Ivory Coast international needs to work on his self-control.
"He had in this game problems to deal with his frustrations and therefore of course we want to play a part ... in helping to deal with that. The other players want to help their partners to deal with frustrations, but you as well are responsible for the own way you deal with it," Wenger said before Monday's FA Cup replay against Cardiff.
"He didn't sense how far you can go. Once he had the first yellow card that was a bit unfortunate. But the second one, you cannot complain."
Eboue, 25, was shown his first yellow card for dissent, but Wenger has not discussed the incidents with him because the player left for international duty with Ivory Coast.
Eboue, who plays in midfield and defence, has been working to regain his confidence since Dec. 6 when Wenger substituted him three minutes before the end of his team's nervy 1-0 victory over Wigan in the Premier League after the player was loudly booed by the Arsenal fans.
Wenger also expressed surprise at the dismissals of managers Luiz Felipe Scolari of Chelsea and Tony Adams of Portsmouth – the latter played for Wenger and was the Arsenal captain.
"Scolari's a world-known manager and was given six months," Wenger said. "That is of course a big surprise. It's as well difficult to know what the atmosphere is inside the club."
Wenger rated his successor Guus Hiddink "highly because he has been tremendously successful everywhere. He has a long career, strong personality. Anyway, when you know that one super manager will be sacked at Chelsea, another super manager will come in."
The Frenchman also believes Portsmouth made a mistake in not keeping Adams on as manager.
"I believe Tony will still be a very good manager and that he was not given the needed time," Wenger said. "It was a big surprise to me that so quickly they made such a big decision because when they made the decision to give him the job, they knew he worked there for one-and-a-half years.
"They knew him. When you give such a responsibility to a young manager you know you have to give him time." |

Wenger backs his former Arsenal skipper to bounce back

Arsene Wenger believes former Arsenal Football Club skipper Tony Adams will grow to be a ‘very good’ manager.
The former Gunners skipper was sacked as manager of Portsmouth this week after just 22 games, but Wenger is confident he will bounce back.
"I believe that Tony will be a very good manager and I don't believe he was given the needed time," the Frenchman told Arsenal's official website.
"It is a big surprise that they made a big decision so quickly because when they made the decision to give him the job they knew he has worked there for a year-and-a-half and they knew him. When you give a young manager that much responsibility you have to give him time." |
