LIFE
Sincere Apsah paves the way

THERE are many words to describe petite Apsah Abdul Majid; a mother, an educator, a principal or even a Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education. Cikgu (teacher) is the term of endearment she prefers the most. Apsah Haji Abdul Majid smiled as she recounted the number of former students who have come up to her over the years, calling her "Cikgu Apsah". "I love it," she smiled. "It is exactly how I want to be remembered, as a role model and a mentor." Regardless of how they remember her, whether as strict or caring, it is how she had touched their lives, she added. Apsah's education started in 1960 in Lamunin and spanned over the years to Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien (Soas) College, Sek Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri (STPRI) and completing her 'A' levels in Weston-Super Mare Technical College. She went on to gain an Economics degree in Coventry University in the UK. After settling in Brunei to get married, in 1978, she went on to study at the Institute of Education, Singapore where she achieved a diploma in education. She taught in Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah as an Economics teacher after her diploma and in 1989, went back to the Institute of Education, Singapore to further earn a diploma in Educational Administration. After a two-year stint of becoming the first female principal at Sekolah Menengah Berakas, Cikgu Apsah returns to Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, this time as a principal. To date, she is the longest serving principal of Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, being a mother to some 1,000 students over her years there. She admits that there is a big difference to teaching 18-year- olds to her younger students in Sekolah Menengah Berakas. "It was a 24-hour responsibility," she said. "These are the cream of Brunei, our future leaders." In 1994, she achieved her Masters degree in education at St John's University in New York. "Being contented with what you have is very important," said Apsah. "I thought being principal was already the best achievement I could have accomplished." After some 30 years of service as an educator, in 2006, Apsah earned the position of Deputy Permament Secretary for the Ministry of Education. Having the position to improve on the education system in Brunei, Apsah said that the ministry's main challenge is to teach the youths of Brunei today is the English language. "We need to teach them the importance of the language so that they can understand their lessons better and therefore do their work better. "Good command of English will also allow the students to express themselves better." A mother of five, Apsah's climb to success has not been easy. The trials in her life was mostly personal, not her career. Five years ago, her eldest son, Hadiki, now 27, went into cardiac arrest in his third year in UBD which left him with little bodily functions. With tears reflecting in the glasses she wears, Apsah recalls the tormented years of having to take care of him in the hospital with her youngest daughter. "She would sing to him every night in the hopes of getting him better," she remembers. A woman of strength realises life's mistakes can also be God's blessings and capitalises on them. Amidst all this trauma, Apsah still tried to keep a level head and remain strong for the rest of her family. Seeing her strength and how she did not let self-pity swallow her whole or deter her from her career or spending time with her other children, they followed suit. Her daughter, Hafizati, 23, is currently in her second year in Calgary University, Canada, studying medicine and her third child, is currently in London University in the School of African and Oriental studies, studying politics and South East Asian studies, she proudly told The Brunei Times. At 53, Apsah has accomplished a great many things and withstood a great many barriers, and with little regrets. She said there are ample opportunities for women to succeed in their careers. "I don't think women has to choose between a career and family. We can have the best of both worlds. Yes it is hard but if you make your priorities right." She said sincerity is also the key to a good career. "You must work sincerely. Don't think about promotions or other rewards. If you are sincere everything else will fall into place." Two years to go until retirement, Apsah said that she has no definite plans after retiring. She mentions her dreams about building a school but admits that she would like some time off. Living proof that being contented with what you have can get you places, when asked if she has achieved what she set out to do, Apsah said " I have achieved beyond my expectations." Her advice to the younger generation of women today is "Live a legacy. Have an impact on people's lives." Apsah is one of the key participants at the BAG's International Women's Day 2007 Celebration on March 24.
