Ikuta Toma X Yara Tomoyuki

Hakone crazy trip!? Relaxing and talking about memories at a hot spring♥
“Toma used to be small and cute!”
The two currently act together in the stageplay “Grease.”
In the brief break they get between rehearsals, they go on an off-trip!
We had them relax and talk in Hakone’s nature.
We bring you their talk about nostalgic memories and friendly backstage episodes!

Theme 1: A nostalgic incident!?
Toma was scared of the haunted house!
Toma: We used to be in the same shows and concerts together a lot.
Yara: Toma at the time was small and everyone looked after you!
Toma: Stories from years ago are so nostalgic. In those days, all our costumes would be in a box. It’s was first come first serve.
Yara: Right! If you’re late, you get ones that don’t fit you and stuff. Shoes and stuff too, someone would take the wrong one there’d be two right shoes left over and stuff (laughs).
Toma: For music shows too, Jr. would have to wait on the stairs outside of the dressing room. Like for “Music Station,” we’d be sitting on the stairs and waiting, and when Tamori-san passed by we’d clap and go “Tamo-sa~n!” (laughs)
Yara: Also, we went to Taiwan together for a KinKi Kids concert!
Toma: Ah~, we did~.
Yara: Remember the haunted house we went to? Everyone was saying they’d go, but Toma alone said “I never want to.” And then we forced you to come anyway.
Toma: I was scared at the time!
Yara: And then the last ghost realized that we were Jr.s! Apparently inside was a fan, and the ghost was like “shake my hand~” (laughs).
Toma: Right right! That was funny!

Theme 2: A memorable play together
Scary movies at a hotel in Osaka!
Toma: And then after that we’ve been together in several plays.
Yara: When we acted together in “SHOCK,” Toma showed his own color in his role and I thought that was great. You’d read the script really deeply and I could tell that you were really serious about acting.
Toma: Yaracchi’s dancing is really amazing. You don’t have any weird habits but still it’s unique. I thought it was great how you could use that to the fullest on stage
Yara: We went together to Osaka for Shounentai-san’s “PLAYZONE” too.
Toma: Mm. We couldn’t leave the hotel much so everyone brought along a lot of DVDs.
Yara: Right, like scary movies (laughs).
Toma: Seven or eight of us would all get together in one room and squish together and watch (laughs) Nostalgic!

Theme 3: Things to look forward to for “Grease”
Toma witnesses Yaracchi’s tennen [T/N: tennen = natural = funny without intending to be]
Toma: And then this time’s “Grease!” During rehearsals, Yaracchi’s tennen is all over the place (laughs).
Yara: Like tripping on nothing~. Whenever something like that happens, Toma’s watching with a smirk.
Toma: I just happen to see it. Also, these days Yaracchi carries around a helmet for break dance practice. When we went to eat ramen after rehearsals, you were walking with a helmet in your arm and it was funny (laughs).
Yara: Toma has no spacey times like that~. You have a wide perspective all the time and I think you’re fit to be the troupe leader.
Toma: I really depend on Yaracchi for the dancing parts. I’m constantly checking “This part’s like this right?” when we rehearse.
Yara: And the music’s real good too.
Toma: The story takes place in the 50’s, but it’s something that would also work right now too, I think it’s something that’ll always be true. I think it’ll be a fun story of youth so please look forward to it!

[captions... this will very likely be scanlated by tfs, so you might want to wait for that XD]

[p. 92]
[top right, drinking tea] Arrived at Hakone! Starting off in a relaxed mode with some tea♪
[next to top right, standing] “The greenery’s healing~” Fully enjoying the nature around them!
[right large] The two happily talked about rehearsals for the play on the day before on their way to the bath.
[center film, first] First of all to the foot bath. “Oh~, warm!” A bit moved!
[center film, second] Toma abruptly stands up when he finds something interesting.
[center film, third] Finding bumps at the bottom to massage their feet on. “Here! Here!” while smiling.
[center film, fourth] Checking the temperature of the water, “This is where it flows out~.”
[center film, last] Toma-kun yells “Hey this really hurts!!” and Yara-kun cracks up.
[top left] When you come to mountains you have to do this!? And so a rare? shot at them breathing deeply.

[p.93]
[top right] First of all, a toast with oolong-tea!
[top right, second row] Absorbed in the food…… (laughs).
[toma with tempura] “The tempura’s come~!!” (Toma)
[bottom right] The Hakone souvenir search starts.
[yaracchi with puzzle] “A Hakone craft puzzle for Toma!” (Yara)
[toma with shirt] “Hey Yaracchi, what about this one~?” (Toma)
[toma holding shirt to yaracchi] “Not this (laughs)!” says Yara-kun.
[toma holding shirt to yaracchi, bottom left] “Then this!” A mini-costume check begins (laughs).
[left large] Fully satisfied with the food, the “Grease” combination is full of smiles. “I want rice with miso soup!” They even said this at the exact same timing (laughs)!

[box on p.92]
Photoshoot diary in Hakone
Dancing and singing in the outside hot spring, the two-person trip
We met up at eight in the morning on this day! Because it was early in the morning, Toma-kun arrived first to the meeting place rubbing his eyes. Yara-kun came along next and we headed toward Hakone. On the ride there, of course both of them totally slept non-stop till Hakone…… (laughs)
When we arrived at Hakone, we went to the foot-bath first! The two gradually woke up and got hyper after that with the meal that followed. Telling each other which dish was good, the two seemed to enjoy their meal. After the meal, Toma-kun goes “Can we take a dip in the hot springs?” Yara-kun also says “We want to don’t we!?” and the two headed towards the hot spring outside. They were apparently quite hyper while in the hot spring and Yara-kun said “We danced to ‘Grease’ in the bath (laughs)” while Toma-kun cheerfully smiled.

Revealing thoughts about his precious people! LOVE log 7
“My little brother looked forward to “Maou” every week.”
He likes people. Older and younger and of the same age, he likes spending time with everyone, to this Toma we asked about his thoughts towards his precious people. Moments like paradise he makes with his friends, this was the reason that Toma can smile.

Toma’s Precious People

1. Someone who makes me smile
I always ask Atsuhiro-kun for advice.
The person who always makes me smile when I’m with him is Sato Atsuhiro-kun I think. He’s a dai-sempai, but he’s frank and cheerful and our relationship is a friendship between men. It started out when Atsuhiro-kun came and watched a stageplay of mine, and then after that we were in two stageplays in a row together and got to know each other better. He’s taught me the fun in stageplays and acting, and he’s the only sempai with whom I talk with and ask for advice about my work. He’s give me a lot of words that have stuck with e. Do I remember what they were? I won’t say it (laughs). I’m keeping them in my heart! Sometimes when I’m feeling stressed, Atsuhiro-kun’s words support me through.

2. Someone I want to meet and talk to
I’m curious about what Kaneko-san talks about!
The script writer for “Hachimitsu to Clover” Kanko Shigeki-san. During the after-party, he said to me “There’s a lot I want to talk about,” but we couldn’t talk much. The next time we met we couldn’t talk much either, and when we were leaving he was like “Toma0kun we couldn’t talk again” (laughs). I’m really curious what it’s about! Since it’s rare that the script writer is on the filming site, he seems to try to keep a watch on things. I’m thankful.

3. Someone I can talk honestly to
I have a lot of passionate friends so we’re all honest!
The person that I can talk the most honestly too is Atsuhiro-san again. But with my friends I’m always honest. Because the people that I become friends with are always the manly types who’re clear about their own opinions. Familiar examples would be MatsuJun and Yama#a (Tomohisa). We went to the same school, and even if we meet after a long while, we can talk without hesitation. Oguri Shun-kun who I became friends with in “Hanazakari no Kimitachi e ~Ikemen paradise~” is also manly too. We haven’t been able to recently, but once we start talking, we’re really passionate.

“Whenever I meet Okamoto Kenichi-san, I think he’s so cool!!”

4. Someone who makes me nervous when we’re talking
I meet Okamoto Kenichi-san by coincidence a lot
I think this might be Okamoto Kenichi-san. Okamoto Kenichi-san, I simply just really like. Every time I meet him I think “He’s so cool whenever I meet him~” with a sense of satisfaction (laughs). When I first entered the jimusho I didn’t meet him much, and it’s only these past few years that I’ve been able to properly speak with him. Recently, when I go see a stageplay he’d be there by chance too and stuff, we meet by coincidence a lot! There was once when I met him out in the city when Kenichi-san was walking with his son Keito-kun too.

5. Someone whom I admire
If it’s Furuta-san, even being an underling would make me happy (laughs)
I admire Furuta Arata-san. His sense presence is really amazing. Especially when I watched the stageplay “Dokuro-juo no Nananin,” (The Seven of the Skull Castle) I actually got goosebumps! His “way of life” is awesome too. Furuta-san doesn’t keep a cell phone, so I usually can’t contact him. So when I go watch his stageplays or rehearsals, I talk with him a lot. I apparently count as one of Furuta-san’s underlings. He apparently said on radio “Yashima Tomohito and Ikuta Toma are my underlings” (laughs). Even that makes me happy!!

6. Someone to whom I want to say thank you
I was moved at Southern’s live show!
Southern All Stars! The other day I went to their live show, it was really fun and I really received a lot of power from them! I think there isn’t anyone who hates Southern. I like their ballads and up-beat songs too, but the song that I especially like is “Gomen yo Boku ga Baka datta” (I’m sorry, I was the stupid one). Other than them, I want to say thank you to everyone I’ve ever met. Once in a few years there’s a major meeting for me, and I’m here today from an accumulation of those.

7. My most precious people
I have good memories from my family trip.
My family I guess. My best memory so far was when I had just gotten my driver’s license, we all went to a hot spring together. My family was like “Are you going to be okay!?” and watched over me (laughs). We haven’t spent a lot of time together recently, but when we do meet I think we talk quite a lot. I’m close to my little brother too. We go to live shows together, and apparently he watches “Maou” quite a lot these days. He tries to watch the completed video I receive before the broadcast (laughs). He seems to enjoy it.

LET’S CHECK
Friendship YES or NO questions!

Q1. You easily make friends
YES/NO
It depends on the situation I meet them in. I’m not that afraid of strangers, but I’m not totally unafraid either.

Q2. You fight even with your good friends
YES
Mm, I think I do. Of course not childish fights like I used to as a student though (laughs).

Q3. You want to celebrate friends’ birthdays.
YES
I send texts and buy presents and stuff. I do think I want to celebrate in a way.

Q4. You think true friendship between a man and a woman is possible.
YES/NO
I think friendship is possible, but men and women are basically different. I don’t think it’d be the same as my male friends/

Q5. If you and a friend fell in love with the same person, you’d give up.
YES
I think I’ll talk with my friend about how I feel. But after this and that, I think in the end I’ll choose our friendship.

I went to see a stageplay by Otona Keikaku!
I’m busy with filming for “Maou,” but in between I’ve been going to stageplays now and then. The latest one was a stageplay by Otona Keikaku Totsuka Kouhei-san. I learned a lot, and it was really fun!

GO! GO! 50’s Ikuta Toma
Playing the lead role at Aoyama Theater, it’ll be a profound experience

Musical “Grease”
Having been in the drama “Maou” (TBS Network), and having taken a great step forwards as an actor, Ikuta Toma finally appears on our cover for the first time!
His current feelings, and his thoughts on the musical “Grease” in which he’ll be playing the lead role this autumn is what we got him to talk about.
Co-actor Yara Tomoyuki’s interview is also a must-see!

When I hear of Aoyama Theater, I think of Purezon (“PLAYZONE”). Playing the lead role at this Aoyama Theater, it’ll be a profound experience. Actually, when I first entered this line of work, I knew nothing but I was taken out to see a stageplay, and the first play I saw was Purezon. I think it was in ’97, so this is when I was only about 12 or 13 years old. And in the final year of this Purezon, I get to play the lead role in the same Aoyama Theater, it’s an indescribable feeling.

Plus the piece is “Grease.” I saw the movie version on DVD, and it’s a really cheerful and fun piece. When I talked to people in their late 30’s~40’s around me, it surprised me how many people said “I saw the movie when I was young” and “I really like it, that piece.” I think it’ll be enjoyable if those people brought their kids and watched. From the kids’ sides, I think this “Grease” will be their first play to ever see. Just like how I saw my first play 11 years ago at Aoyama Theater,  in that sense, I think this’ll be the perfect play. The story’s clear and there’s lots of singing and dancing, so it’s a musical that really lets you have fun.

Song and dance are things you enjoy watching and can think “this is fun~” in the first place right? On top of that, it’s visually attractive, there’s a live band, and it takes place at a school. I think this piece is one where we want people to go home thinking “Ah, that was fun!” Being loved by so many people, I think that means this piece is that attractive, so while we rehearse for it that’s what I want to think about. The partner of Danny whom I act as is good at singing and she’s a really good actress according to what I hear, Kanda Sayaka-chan. This is the first time we’re acting together. It’s also my first time acting with Yara-kun, and it’s my first time in an outside play, so I’m really looking forward to it.

I hate being half-hearted.
I want to confidently move forwards.

As far as I’m concerned, I want to move around a lot. At our first meeting, I said to the foreign choreographers “Please let me do a lot of hard things,” and they said “Ok!” (laughs).  I think for plays like this, it’ll be good if I can act a bit cool and be like, awesome! Doing that too, at the same I think that by moving around a lot energetically, I can express things like youth and audacity.

Or more like, it’s probably just my personality, I hate being half-hearted (laughs). I’m quite the type who wants to move on only when I’m confident. If I come up with a question while I’m doing something, and I think “Maybe if I do it this way it’ll be more interesting,” and then I think that it’d be a waste if I didn’t try it out and ask the director about it. It depends on what the director’s aiming for, but if they say no then I’ll understand, and on the contrary, if they say “That would be more interesting,” then for both the play and me, it’ll be better. So I think that you need to directly talk with each other at least once.

I wonder when it was that I started to think like this~. Probably after I started doing lots of stageplays.  Speaking of outside plays, for example, “Azumi~” became a turning point for me.  It was a tough piece in lots of ways, so I really remember it well. For the first shows, everyone was almost overwhelmed.  So that kind of feel was in the play too I think, but from there we rehearsed some more, and when we did “Azumi Returns,” I was able to clearly feel how I and the other members of the group had matured.

And of course, “Susanoo ~Kami no Ken no Monogatar~” and “Cat in the Red Boots” that I was allowed to do with “Gekidan☆Shinkansen,” both of them became turning points for me too. At those sites, there were people worthy of being called professionals each working in their own area, and I was able to learn about how to face and feel about a stageplay.

The way the people at Shinkansen seriously play is really awesome. For me, Shinkansen  is where I can really enjoy making a play. Like for the second piece, I felt like I “came back” to them (laughs). When I go see their plays, they let me join them, and they always give me T-shirts and stuff (laughs). I’ve deemed them “family” without telling them already (laughs).

Recently, I’ve started being able to balance things well.

And these days, I get called quite a lot for drama series too. I do feel happiness in that I can work both in stageplays and on screen. I think a lot of people learned of my name through the dramas, and I’m really thankful for that. It’d make me happy if I could be the trigger that makes them think “I want to go watch a stageplay,” “Maybe I’ll try going to a theater.”

In the case of a drama, unlike stageplays, it’s not like we start filming from the start of the story, so it’s hard to connect the emotions between scenes. Especially for the role I play right now in “Maou,” he’s somebody whose emotions are easily moved, so it’s hard work. For each episode, there’re a  whole ton of keywords, so when we film out of order, sometimes I get confused and I’m like “What am I supposed to know right now and what do I not know?” (laughs). Thanks to that, there’re a lot of times for this drama that I go home and go through all the scripts again. There’s only a limited amount of time and the shooting has to go on, so at first it felt a bit awkward but these days, I feel like I’ve  started being able to balance things well.

For “Grease,” I want to crash into it taking with me all the experience I’ve gained like that, of course in addition to what I’ve learned from previous stageplays too. I think that if you live a good and busy life, you have a “good face.” I hope to do the play with a good face, and I want the audience to go home with good faces. I’d like to properly take on the responsibility and complete my role as Danny.

♦Who’s you’re hero?

When I was a child, I used to like the hero “Chojuu Sentai Liveman.” The person I’ve like since junior high or high school is X-JAPAN’s hide-san. He did maniac things, but he  constantly kept a poppish more major feel too, I think his attitude as an entertainer was awesome.
